Well done that man for trying so hard. Good result adapting basic components. However, the industry has moved on and e-motors, controllers and batteries are shaped to suit a bike and are much advanced from lead acid batteries. But this home-made e-bike is kind of pioneering the idea. My respect!

It works and one of the best version I've seen. Starter motors don't last all that long though. Being designed to bump an engine to life and shut back off in seconds....every ride is potentially the equivalent of years of wear on its mechanical life. Still fun to make stuff from basically salvaged junk though. 😊👍

@@StarterTORTURE I agree with you. 😊👍 It was just a brief passing comment since I don't make and post videos myself. I like the way he solved the problems that come with transferring power to the wheels. Which is where some I've seen tend to kill a starter motor with excessive wear. I only meant that's a good thing to keep in mind when figuring out how to go about retrofitting what you have to work with. I actually like his solution better. Mine requires a machine and welding shop. 😶 Which is one of the reasons I don't personally see any point in uploading my projects. 😉I like these kinds of videos to remind myself to avoid the hassle of making things overly complicated. 😂😂

I made one that drove the front crank, so it gave me the full gearing system. I also employed an alternator for regenerative braking! Acceleration while using the gears was like, amazing and faster than my car can get to 6okmph the problem here and with this one is starter motors are designed for short bursts and not fitted with suitable bearings for this kind of contagious use.. The setup is also a little heavy. The best part with mine was elevating the rear wheel onto a special stand and operating the motor with gearing with the alternator engaged. the bike charged itself and another bank of batteries 14.2 volts.. It was a success but not viable or durable for other reasons. I later made a tricycle with a similar concept but used an AC motor powered by an inverter instead. It is able to power itself at speeds greater than 15 kmpa. mathematically should reach speeds of over 80kmpa, however, i only could maintain 60kmph on a flat road and i was fine with that because anything more would be exceeding the speed limit. . the biggest thing that would blow me away was returning home after spending hours running around town and discovering the battery bank 12v lead acid, was always in a state of high charge! on average 13.2 volts! On occasions lower. I then fitted it with solar panels. due to my health, i have stopped riding it much especially in winter.

Great build! The starter motor really isn't built for continuous use but it goes really good. If you can find an old electric wheelchair you can get powerful motors and 90 degree gearboxes. I have several builds on my channel using them.

Nice job, very innovative. However as someone mentioned in a previous comment, an auto starting motor is not suitable for continuous running. They use bushings not bearings and although they are engineered as 12 volt starters ( running for only a few seconds at a time) they will overheat running on 12 volts for longer periods. They are designed to provide very high torque for short bursts of time. You could try using a 6 volt battery to power a 12 volt starter to help reduce the electrical overheating but that would lower the torque considerably. Using 12 volts with a PWM controller ( like used for speed control on a cordless drill) could give speed control and high torque when needed. It would need to be suitably rated for this considerable power.

Good idea and build, well done! Those who write that kind of sucks, it's sofa experts and do not pay attention to them ... For an hour of driving is enough and fine and nothing will not burn, the resources of the starter will be enough for a long time, you can put a couple of batteries, on the front and trunk ... Thank you for the vidos🌞🌈🤗

@joewoodchuck3824
@joewoodchuck3824 2 жыл бұрын
There are several design issues in this project. As far as the motor itself you may get away with it for a while, but only because the power load is lighter in this application than it's normal load as a starter motor. Go ahead and experiment for the fun of it if you can do it cheaply. If you're going to build something for regular usage, forget what you saw here and use a better design with more suitable components. In any case, be careful with parts decisions and techniques.

John S the matterial you are going to weld to is mostikly going to be thin as hell so 1: reverse your polarity 2: Buy small a$$ rods. 3: 7018's ARE MY FAVORITE if you have a mildly clean surface (no paint or large amounts of rust). 4 Do short beads because i'm quite sure if you're welding on that aluminum you are going to blow right through if you attempt a long bead. 5. Remember welding is just sticking 2 pieces of metal together. 6. P.S. Practice if you have to do vertical welding, or upside down (fast freeze rod). If you can position everything like you like it welding is easy. I would point you to some welding videos that i learned by but i'm busy. Its a white guy that speaks English and has a gorgeous mustache. He's about 40 years-old and look for videos in the 40min+ area. Good luck!

You do need fuses so that you dont ignite the hydrogen that is released from the lead acid battery if and when the starter shorts out. So, ohms law is helpful here. If the starter motor consumes 1000 watts power then you need an 83 amp in between your throttle switch (solenoid) and another one of the same current value in between the swith and the starter motor.

Add a dynamo which usually charges a front light via power from friction of the tire. Then you have a battery charger as well.

Eventually the battery is short lived, there should be a circuit from the running wheels to recharge the battery.
