Alien Theory

The Alien extended universe has offered some hints regarding Ripley's lineage, and others within the bloodline who have encountered the Xenomorph species. Has Ripley's mother been depicted in the series, or has she yet to be seen?

I don’t mind Ripley’s offspring getting involved with Aliens, like in Alien Isolation. Ripley’s daughter is brought in by a sympathetic android when the Nostromo’s flight recorder is found and runs into problems - that makes sense to me. As far as any ancestors running into Aliens, that's just based on pure coincidence. Out of the billions of people alive from 1950 to 2122, Aliens just happened to be dispatched by Ripley’s great-great-great-great-great-great grandad? It serves no purpose other to give some cheap name check to the audience. It’s just dumb and I hope no one outside of comic books tries it again, but considering the disastrousness of the prequels, I wouldn’t be surprised.

@@stoneryoda9377 "Prometheus & covenant ruin nothing" Bwah ha ha ha! Good one! Other than making awesome 18 foot long, elephantine-fused-into-chair truly creepy Space Jockeys into bald, buff albino human Engineers and making xenomorphs not mysterious, ancient aliens but into creations of emo-bot David thereby sucking all the mystique, mystery, and alien-ness that made the first 3 films great, yeah - the prequels are a complete and utter disaster. Ridley Scott should be whipped 1,000 times with a wet spaghetti strand.

As someone who has listened to all the Audible original productions set in the Alien universe, I would suggest that you might want to reconsider Lucy Logan - they are surprisingly well done, and provide some interesting new angles on the setting shown from the perspective of various characters, some established and some created especially for the audio dramas.

Everybody loves Ripley and I get that people like characters to be connected and in the case of Amanda Ripley in alien isolation and even Alan Decker in sea of sorrows I get why there is a connection to both Ripley and the xenomorphs. But I really don't think there's a need for generations of her ancestors to have had run ins with them, that just seems really lazy to me and really, really (like winning the lottery every week for a year) improbable!

I agree with you two so much. Ripley is an every-person who rose to the occasion when hardship struck. Right now, she inspires everyone. PLEASE don't turn her into some boring "magic-bloodline" hero who can't fail at anything, coz she's "destined" for greatness. Literally no-one can relate to that. That's the worst plot ever.

I mean I kinda understand you but I mean seriously its not THAT big of a deal that he is a distant relative to Ripley, Its not like they are calling him MR RIPLEY U SAVIOUR LIKE U ANCESTOR U IS HOLY GOD XENOMORPH SLAYER. He happens to be a relative of Ripley thats all. And besides you haven't read nor listened to the audio dramas. IMO you should really give it a try before you diss the shit out of it. Its not fan fiction it is canon, its not like we found these storys on some weird alien subreddit or something.

Ripley is a really awesome & innovative character. Before her, her character type didn't exist: the strong female protagonist. I like the idea that she wouldn't be the first in her line to battle Xenomorphs. It would be really cool, however unlikely, if they did reveal Daniels to be related to Ripley. Daniels is one of my top 5 favorite characters from the Alien universe, and God willing she doesn't get the Hicks/Newt/Bishop/Shaw treatment before 'Awakening' (no pun intended).

The military chick and the older brother were the only good characters in Requim, at least in my opinion. It wasnt a great movie, although it did show a badass fight scene with the predator and pred-alien hybrid, but it didnt help knowing that a rag tag group of super badass futuristic soldiers, "armed to the teeth" with heavy weapons and explosives were helpless against tons of Xenomorphs, but somehow a small town with pump action shotguns and hunting rifles somehow could hold out in the town square. Sure there were more people fighting but still isnt plausible. Oh well. Also why wouldnt the sheriff listen to the only person with military experience?

Great to see you're back! I copied this from your community page (slightly edited): I was curious if you have done any reviews outside of Covenant, such as with the novels/reference books? You do such a MASTERFUL job incorporating them into your videos, and if there are indeed reviews and I missed them my apologies, but I doubt I'm alone in wondering what your thoughts are on River of Pain, Cold Forge, et al and how they work within the movie universe. Since I'm sure making even one of your videos is quite the ordeal, I'd be perfectly fine with one combined review, but as most (if not all) of your subscribers might say: the more the merrier! I see someone else asked a similar question, specifically about Cold Forge, and I've read your response. Personally, just an image of the book cover is good enough... for me anyway.

The only other thing I can think of is that I incorporated a mini review of Out of the Shadows in a video called “Why was Ripley Lost in Space for 57 Years?” When the audio drama for Sea of Sorrows was released in April I was planning to review it but lost the nerve. I have no plans of going anywhere so I think some reviews are in order for the future. I will definitely review The Predator next month, that I know for sure!

Glad to see you bouncing back, I, myself, had a stomach flu last week, not to bore you with the details, I'm better now. Anyways, it has been awhile since I seen Alien Covenant, reckon I need to crank em all up again, I generally liked the movie, though the idea that David was portrayed as the creator of the Xenomorph seemed farfetched when compared to the first Alien film where the ship appeared to be wrecked for a long time, but that could be explained by Acheron/LV426 atmosphere and weather, the gases could have aged everything to the point it looked like it has been there for centuries, but in reality, only a decade or two. Though I'm more of the opinion that Xenomorphs have been around for long time, and David refined the species. But to the theory that Daniels is a blood relative to Ripley, would be an interesting storyline, but just my opinion, would have sunk the franchise quicker than the overused plot element of scifi A.I. going rogue and attempting to exterminate or enslave humanity, which i think deep down was one of the reasons, there was such a backlash against Ridley Scott and the Alien franchise. So don't get me wrong I like the Alien movies, Alien is epic horror/suspense, Aliens is epic action/adventure, Alien 3 assembly cut is better than the original, but still so so, Alien Resurrection is epic weirdness, Prometheus is kind of a dull action flick, though it does redeem itself as a deep philosophical journey, and Alien Covenant does good with creature peril, but the danger is rather predictable and some of the characters are a little bland, but I do have some movie critic blood in me, so its just my point of view, but all are pretty good movies to sit thru. Oh yeah, I forgot AVP and AVP requeim , not great movies, but not terrible either.
@edwardcarson81
@edwardcarson81 6 жыл бұрын
Sorry about that, I'm not much of typist, nor a writer. I'll try to do better. But in answer to your reply, as an noncanon crossover, AVPR is the worst of the two. I was speaking science fiction in general when I stated "not terrible either." Forgive me when I say Alien is not my first love as a fictional universe, and when you have butted heads with hardcore fans from other scifi/fantasy universes, and them being flesh and blood family and friends, my life is interesting to say the least, though I'm proud to say that I got my eldest nephew into the Alien universe and we watched Alien Covenant in the theater. So to be honest, I have a weakness for bad movies, I blame MST3K for that, and I have watched some terrible crap, a short list includes Breeders, Alien vs Hunter, Galaxy of Terror, The Gamma People, The Star Wars Holiday Special, The Man Who Saved The World(Turkish rip off of Star Wars), Titanic:The Legend Goes On, The Legend of the Titanic, and In Search of The Titanic( these last three are animated musicals from Italy) Compared to these abominations of film, AVPR, though idiotic, is tolerable to watch.
@edwardcarson81
@edwardcarson81 6 жыл бұрын
Nah, not yet. I have heard of them, but a'int got a chance to view any material of theirs. But I'll check 'em out. I like Doug Walker's (Nostalgia Critic) review of Alien Resurrection and AVP, though he doesn't seem to be as insulting to it as he was to Resurrection, and I've found random clips of Rifftrax's (the MST3K guys new gig) treatment of Alien, especially love LOTR references about Ash.

I have a feeling that Scott is going to have Ripley's Mother be the one who finally puts down David for good, and go toe-to-toe with the Xenomorphs to do it. She'd never talk about that if she survived, would you want to traumatise your child that way? But Ripley might just very much be her mothers daughter...

I still hope Blomkamp gets to reboot the franchise after after Aliens, and we dump every movie since. Ripley, Hicks and Newt are still sleeping on the Suvlaco as far as I'm concerned. Everything since was a fever-dream that Newt had in hyper-sleep. Poor girl. Then we can explore the EarthWars plot from the comics. Earth getting infected was awesome, with all the weird alien religions, and the XenoZip. I'd rather see even the WORST of the comics that this modern black-poo nonsense. Even "Music of the Spears" was better than the black-poo! Scott seems top have lost his marbles.

Interesting idea. An a good one. Itd make a nice connection with the Ripley/Weaver Alien franchise we know and her ancestors that fought them before she came into the picture to basically finnally finish them off... before Weyland Yutani corp had to screw it up by pulling a quasi scifi intergalactic Jurassic Park and bringing them back.. minus even seemingly minimum adequate controls.

ZombieMommy this was my thoughts too. Part of the Alien series appeal to me is it's just Jane/John Doe's shoved face first into the stark realization that space and alien life isn't boring but terrifying and hostile. The universe of Alien is grotesquely indifferent to humanity and our own greed and arrogance are as much a danger as the complacency its vast emptiness lulls us into. It's concentrated Sci-Fi nihilism. You don't need destiny or special blood lines and even Star Wars threw that trope out the window.

Ridley Scott is probably going to de-canonize every movie that followed his original 1979 movie with the release of his third prequel movie. And I'm pretty sure he doesn't consider the AVP movies canon. Although they both tried to rehash the Ripley formula.

robot noir: I couldn't agree more. Jonsey's backstory was never properly explored in the first film and Jonsey only had a cameo in the second film. Who would you suggest play Jonsey if they decide to do a series or a movie based Jonsey's character? I think it would be great if the cat from those Friskies commercials played the role of Jonsey! I think you are right about Jonsey's ancestors having a bit of history with combating the Xenomorph species. After all, if you remember, Jonsey seemed pretty hostile toward the Xenomorph embryo in that dream sequence in the second film so maybe there was some history there!

Having Amanda Ridley square off against the Alien in Alien: Isolation is a bit of a reach but the story is constructed well enough that I can suspend disbelief based on the nature of Weyland-Yutani’s drive to harness the xenomorph for economic exploitation intersecting with Amanda’s desire to discover the fate of her mother. It’s a pretty big coincidence they’d both be sole survivors of xenomorph encounters, with Amanda’s feat arguably being the more impressive at the time (until the events of Aliens and maybe Alien 3 giving Ellen some serious points), beyond these two though, that’s probably the limit. The idea of bloodlines being the explanation of why a character is effective has a considerable effect on a narrative and one I find completely incongruent with the universe Alien is set in. It’s a highly fantastical element and Alien is nothing if not rooted in a cold, scientific and somewhat nihilistic universe. This is not Star Wars where the Force essentially operates as “space magic” and certain individuals act as the product of destiny, forever fated to impact the universe in monumental ways. The entire universe of Alien is rooted in the idea that individual humans are small, expendable, and at the mercy of larger forces, be they the momentum of an anonymous corporate conglomerate or some terrifying creature from beyond the stars. Yes, characters like Ripley can win battles and claim personal victories, but look at the wider picture: Ripley basically only stalls the company in the first trilogy. She does not diminish their drive to capture the creature, nor do her actions ruin the company such that they are unable to pursue their agenda. She wins, but it’s always a delaying action, her ability to alter the course of the company and humanity making wider encounters with the xenomorph painfully limited. It’s not meant to be a dig against her - rather the opposite - as it’s impressive that an individual in this universe can achieve even this much of a win, but it’s more a product of the person she is also having the opportunity to be in a place to shape how these local encounters play out. By delving into the past, by trying to retcon Ellen Ripley into the culmination of some fated bloodline, it effectively removes the ability for other characters to accomplish even these chance wins while diminishing Ripley to merely a product of her heritage. Ripley - at least in Alien through Alien 3 - isn’t a Mary Sue, she’s an every(wo)man, who had the good judgment and fortune to make the right decisions at the right junctures to defeat the creature. What makes the story of Alien and Aliens so timeless, so compelling, is the believable and relatable nature of the characters in said universes. Much like in our world, there are forces at play beyond our scope, often the best we can do is score some wins on our own personal level that might have some minor impact on the currents advancing the story. To imply it was only because of our bloodline invalidates our achievements as individuals, particularly in a science fiction setting. Leave the chosen ones and bloodlines to fantasy like Castlevania where it’s effect is more in tone with the universe.

Quick question bfor I go back to work do u think they could make an alien isolation movie of ellens daughter or they will jus leave it in the game? And wat do u think they r going to do with the franchise now that disney bought fox?
@AlienTheory

I don’t think they’ll bring Amanda into a movie but who knows? I think once Disney has the rights to Alien it may depend on Ridley Scott’s relationship with the company. If Scott wants to fight to make more of his prequels I think that will be what we’ll see.

I would love to see Ripleys Mum or a relative in another Alien film as the protagonist OR the protagonists crew member not necessarily the survivor either i think their survival wouldn't need to be set in stone as it maybe cliche to do that their death maybe more interesting like Where the first Ripley didn't succeed her or his ancestor will

Ok there will be spoilers for Sea of sorrows ahead...you have been warned! First, I am kinda disappointed that Daniels wasn’t Ellen Ripely s mother...(personality I kinda hoped it would somehow be Elizabeth Shaw). Second, I would like to know how Ellen and Amanda Ripley are Alan Decker’s ancestors because it is stated in the extended version of aliens that Amanda Ripley aka Amanda McLaren didn’t have children. Maybe she did and somehow erased the information to protect the kid (I know that’s what happened in blade runner 2049 so don’t flame me!) or maybe his ancestor was Ripley 8 (which could possibly explain him and his family’s “psychic ability” ) thoughts anyone?

It would be great to see Ripley's mom. Daniels was definitely not it, and it's clear that David is planning to kill Daniels or use her to make his Alien Queen.

David did tell Daniels that what he did to Elizabeth Shaw was the same thing he would do to her. Lucy, the one scenario is to give Ripley, Hicks and Newt the sendoff they deserve, and see Ripley pass the baton to Newt, her surrogate daughter is the one scenario I am hoping for.

The great thing about this fandom is that we can agree to disagree. You might like the novel Alien: Sea of Sorrows, based on one of Ripley's descendants, not working for Weyland-Yutani, who is abducted by the company because they think he is able to find the aliens.

Lucy Logan No, but they are enjoyable. I'm currently working on Earth Hive at the moment. River of Pain was interesting. Believable, because I could see the company was that callous as to not keep escape craft at Hadley's Hope except for the Science Team.

To be honest Prometheus as Alien Covenant where nice but in my personal opinion below there capabilities these movies could be. So I stick to Alien, Aliens and Alien3 because at least this 3 one had soul, cool characters and where good made movies. The rest like AvP series Alien 4 or Prom.. Conve... didn't have the spirit of the first movies. I doubt it that Scott will create something that can be even close to the original.

Having the "Ripley Family" eternally cursed with encounters past and future takes away from The Original movie. Ripley and the crew of the Nostromo were just a bunch of random space truckers. normal people who landed on the wrong planet. "6 Space Truckers and THE RIPLEY, Who's Family is sworn to a Thousand Generations of Combat with the evil alien that no one is supposed to know about yet" Just doesn't have the same ring to it ;)

I thought the whole point of Ripley was that she was just a normal woman trying to get home to her daughter not some pre-ordined warrior queen destined to save humanity from Aliens.

I'm probably going to get some flack for this. I for one hope that Ridley Scott's prequel series does not continue. Covenant ruined Prometheus for me. I hated what happened to Shaw and giving the xenomorph an origin in my opinion was a very bad move. Keeping the alien a mystery is what made it terrifying and for lack of a better word alien. I refuse to acknowledge Prometheus and Covenant because again I strongly believe that it damages the franchise. If done right I would love to see Ripley's ancestors or better yet her descendants. I know her daughter is dead but it is never started if she had any siblings. But that is just me.
