I was doing 5-6k intervals with full synthetic and a good filter, Wix Xp mostly. I started stretching it out to 7-8k and now I do 10k intervals. I do change the filter at 5k and top off but I have zero issues doing this. I run my diesels to 15-20k and change the filters every 5k as well. Got 293k on the f350, 218k on a Blazer and had almost 400k on a Pathfinder… 3k intervals are not longer needed with todays oil🤷🏼‍♂️ Now it’s just about teaching people to actually do the oil changes before it’s time to do an engine replacement 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Bought my new truck in 2000 and changed the oil every 3k. And now in 2022 it has over 300k and still runs great. Take care of your vehicle, and it will last a long time. ADDITION/UPDATE! Maybe it's wasteful to change my oil every 3k. But I do my oil changes myself and grease the suspension at the same time. Still havethe original ball joints as well. Even though they have no zerk fittings. I use a home made needle for my grease gun and poke the needle into the rubber boot. It's swiss cheesed by now. But it forces out the water and dirt and stays lubricated. So wasteful? Buying a new truck is wasteful! And in my local u-pull-it junkyard, there is over thirty dodge Dakotas from owners that didn't take care of their dakotas. I hope they are enjoying those $600 new car payments! LOL!

Every engine is different, but my rule of thumb is 5k miles on full synthetic. Some cars can go more, if you have a really cleanly designed engine like a Toyota they usually are good for longer oil changes. I've owned some cars with dirty engines, you go 3k miles on Mobil1 or Pennzoil Platinum, that oil is cooked.

As a car mechanic from Europe it is always nice to see that the cars in the US have shorter oil intervals. 3000 -5000 miles seem to the standard over there. Here in Europe the intervals are in general around 15.000 miles. I have to agree that also in my opinion the intervals are to long here, specifically with the down sized engines.

And what i see here that when the cars have driven around the 186.000 miles in general most are worn out and face issues with oil consumption. So i agree shoter intervals. Direct injection turbo engines need to be cleaned regardless. No port injection to clean the valves. Also the engines are smaller in displacement with lots of stress and heat from the turbo. So oil intervals should be lower due to the engine working harder always. My two cents no engineer or anything.

Man don’t tell people that. With today’s oils you can easily go 5,000 to 7,000 miles between oil changes. And if you use Amsoil signature series oils, you can go easily 15,000 to 20,000 miles between oil changes with normal driving. But if you use cheap store brand oils then yes, 3,000 to 4,000 miles between oil changes. But if you use name brand oils like Amsoil you will be throwing away money in perfectly good oil if you change it every 3 to 4000 miles. I have used Amsoil signature series oils in my vehicles for over 15 years and never had a problem with them. And I change my oils every 15,000 miles if I’m towing in 20,000 miles if I’m not or once a year and I’ve also had my engine apart with zero varnish and sludge buildup on my engine as well.

I got a 2010 Mazda that I bought new back in 2011. The manual suggest 7-8000mi oil changes. I noticed the 1st time I went to 5000, the oil was thin, black and was low 1/2qt. Since then I’ve never let it go over 4,000mi. It has 180,000mi and still as good of a car as my 3.0L Camry and my Acura.

I would recommend using mobile 1 advanced full synthetic to clean engines just drive on them and change it when necessary they have enough additives to break down sludge deposits. I wouldn’t flush it because I’ve heard about people clogging oil pump and blowing rods from this.

I've had Mercury Villagers with the Mitsubishi engine that had over 250,000 miles on them and they would still burn rubber but no oil, unibodies rusted out... A Toyota 4Runner over 200,000 miles rusted frame and electrical... girlfriends Toyota Rav 4 265,000 still going strong and Honda CRV 240,000 miles crash took it out... All on Mobil 1 oil and filter every 5000 to 7000 miles... no transmission troubles and never changed their oil... Michigan vehichles...

I have a 2007 tahoe 5.3 sitting at 292k miles at the moment, bought at just under 100k. I do only mobil1 oil and filters, 7k mile oil change intervals and once a year i swap to royal purple because it’s got more cleaners than any other oil. There’s not a single bit of sludge or varnish underneath my valve covers.

Dirty little secret; almost all "synthetic" motor oils are not synthetic but rather regular oil with enough additives to qualify it as "fully synthetic". Actual synthetic oils are really expensive and not worth it for most people.

@@michaelmay5453 Amsoil is a real life synthetic, it's back by proven results, it's used in jet aircraft in both civilian and military....... yes compared to oil u walk in and buy , it's very expensive , me being a seasoned retired technician with over 45+ yrs experience , I had customers that loved the stuff and testing has a lot of datta in both private and government military testing .......... it's the first name in synthetics....... I've used it in my 1991 B250 van , I've clocked 185 thousand miles on odometer and as soon as I find / get the right grommets for my fuel tank van will be back on the road , 10 yrs ago at 125 thousand miles I replaced the timing chain and gears , upon tear down , inspecting it , no wear , but it was torn down I did go ahead with the install.... milage on van when purchased was 34, 590. So I've racked up the miles and ready for more soon I hope lol

It depends on how you’re driving. Short trips require shorter oil change intervals. Long driving keeps the oil cleaner longer allowing longer intervals.
