Thank you so much for your lesson. 1. In the past, when I found out that someone had just badmouthed me, I would take a mental note that they weren't my true friends and I had to be careful when hanging out or working with them. However, I never had the courage to confront them and let them know that I wasn't comfortable with what they said about me. Now, I've grown more confident and courageous. I realize that those moments when someone badmouths me is an opportunity for me to test if they are my true friends or not. I still fear confrontation but sometimes I just ignore my pounding heart and muster all my mental strength to face those tricky situations.

Hi. Thanks for sharing your very honest answer. I think it's a very natural approach. Many of us don't like confrontations. Being badmouthed is hurtful. You're right that our reaction is a test of our character.

Thanks! 😃 Idioms are fun to study. It's about learning to accept unusual meanings because we can't always immediately guess what an idiom means if there isn't enough context.

Hello Jennifer! Nice to see you! Thanks much for the lesson! It was not easy for me to understand that. I guessed 3 meanings of the idioms out of 5. My answers to your questions: 1. I would listen to a person calmly and take the opinion into account for the future. 2. I believe children shouldn't be punished for mouthing off. In my opinion, parents ought to explain what is good and what is bad to their kids with words. 3. I let her go. And if she were him, I would like to stop it. 4. Yes, it happened, fortunately not often. 5. A smell of grilled fresh beef makes my mouth water.
@Englishwithjennifer

I'm glad you challenged yourself to guess. How did you do with the short review exercise? 1. Good plan. Try to listen and remain calm. Suggested wording: I would listen to the person calmly and take their opinion into account for the future. 2. Yes, and parents can model good practices. Right? 3. Do you mean that you would stop if it were a guy (a male friend)? I guess it also depends on how close you are to the person. Right? 4. Hee hee. Yes, we've all likely spoken too freely at times. 5. Grilled meat is delicious. Agreed. Suggested wording: The smell of grilled beef makes my mouth water. Thanks for sharing!

That was a mouthwatering lesson! I think idioms should be avoided in formal communication. Idioms can always be replaced with more formal wording. Question 1 I would be very unhappy about this, and I would ask the coworker/classmate this,:"You look as if you are unhappy with me. How can we put this right?" If I were to reveal what I had heard this person say about me, then I would be getting someone else in trouble for revealing something told in confidence. The situation requires sensitivity. Question 2 Children should be given advice about how to express their feelings in an appropriate manner. Question 3 I would politely tell her to not talk so much as it is being counterproductive. Question 4 Yes, my knowledge on certain subjects has irritated people in the past. Question 5 The smell of bread being baked is delicious. It makes my mouth water.
@Englishwithjennifer
@Englishwithjennifer 3 жыл бұрын
1. True. Maybe it's not best to call them out on that. Just try to clear the air in another way. 2. Agreed. Teach them while they're young. 3. How about changing the subject? ;) 4. We all get passionate about certain things, forgetting that those around us may not share our interest. 5. Oh yes! Freshly baked bread. How yummy! Thanks for sharing!

1. I would try to make them understand that bad-mouthing is not a good thing to do. 2. Not necessarily. I think they won't do it if parents are able to make them understand that mouthing off about something/ someone is not always desirable. 3.If I had been at that party, I would have wished that she leaves soon. 4.I do. But I also make sure that I don't cross my line. 5. The smell of the chicken cooked by my mother always makes my mouth water. Please check my grammar! Thanks Jennifer for your lesson!

1. Yes, it's one approach. I might try to ignore it and hope my own actions speak for themselves in a positive way. 2. True. Parents have to create the parameters for acceptable behavior. 3. Hee hee. If the party is happening right now, you can say, "If I were at the party, I would hope that she'd leave soon." 4. Self-control, right? 5. Ah yes! Baked chicken or fried chicken is a lovely smell. Good effort, Hilal.

2- Sometimes it's difficult to differentiate when a child is mouthing-off or just expressing a thought. In my opinion, children should be sensibly talked never published, they're just in their early life. On the other hand, punishment only results in a fear of being punished.
