I (20f) live with two roommates and currently am not working or in school because where I work has not resumed yet since Covid. We are getting paid though. I do have income coming in from my employer so rent is no big deal. My father (who I'm estranged from) reached out via social media and also via other family to ask me to babysit my half siblings since he and his wife are back at work now.
My father and I are estranged because after my mom died when I was 7 he gave me 5 "new mom's" in quick succession before the sixth one actually married him when I was 10. Every single woman he dated he introduced to me and told me they would be my new mom. He spent those three years dating non stop and looking for someone else to take my mom's place. He found someone more than willing. But it left me feeling pretty damn abandoned and angry that he thought he could just replace her for me.
Story 1:
AITA for refusing to babysit my father's kids?
Story 2:
AITA for proving my mom was being a hypocrite?
Story 3:
AITA For refusing to let my stepdaughter use my daughter's wedding dress?
Story 4:
AITA for telling my parents to back off and stop trying to get the cousins to meet?

2nd story: I'm sorry. Why should a sixteen year old deal with her own mother calling her a slut? That is child abuse. Go to father and state facts. He needs to address the mother's blatant abuse. "Keeping the peace" is only enabling abusive behavior. If that doesn't work, reach out to a guidance counselor. Enough!!
@vesselfit2use
@vesselfit2use 3 жыл бұрын
Exactly! Because "keeping the peace" is only to not anger the mother. But no one else is in peace, everyone else is walking on eggshells especially the older sister. And the mother obviously has no peace in general because she is so evil and abusive.

Story #1: NTA. He doesn't even have her phone number, but the first thing he asks for in 3 years is a favor? OP's dad tried to replace her dead mom and got mad when OP wasn't with it after he went through a half dozen or more women. This wasn't about OP, it's about him and his convenience. Stoey #2: NTA. It's pathetic thst a grown woman is clearly jealous of her teenage daughter's body, because that's what this is. She ran off in a huff was because she knew she had no leg to stand on once OP called her out. Apologizing to "keep the peace" is the same as placating a bully, and that's exactly what the mom is. Story #4: NTA. OP's sister clearly has a grudge over something considering that she specifically avoids even interacting with OP. The reasons "why" don't matter. If someone tells you that they don't want to associate with you, drop it and leave it alone. The grandparents need to stay out of this because it isn't their business.

Last story. Parents screwed up in their parenting if the two girls are so far apart. I get sibling rivalry but this seems extreme to say the least, not at the wedding, never seen the boys, not interacting with family if one sister is there WEIRD! Still NTA you can't push the children into a relationship that is this fractured the parents need to drop this.

With the third-story you need to reevaluate your marriage with your husband and your stepdaughter. Because quite frankly if he's not going to stand up for you to his own daughter about something that's so sentimental then you may need to start applying for an annulment or a divorce plain and simple. You need to put that dress somewhere where neither one of them knows where it is and quite frankly this seems like a man who will please his daughter and do what's in the best interest of his wife

It does seem that something bigger may be going on with the last story, where OP’s sister has said that she doesn’t want anything to do with OP and that the cousins will never meet each other. But that is not necessarily OP’s fault. It seems like deep seeded resentment and there is nothing OP can do to resolve the situation. If she reaches out to her sister to warn about what they are doing, she will be the one blamed even though she is just giving her a heads up. If she does what her parents want, she will be the one blamed, despite her parents starting, planning and carrying this out. The best she can do is keep her head down, don’t do or say anything and ignore her parents. I think a big part of why they are still pestering her about this is that she is justifying herself and engaging with them. Go grey-rock on them. When they don’t get what they are looking for (not just getting their own way, but also engagement with OP,) they will turn their efforts on OP’s sister and maybe she will start seeing this for what it probably was while OP and her were growing up; their negative influence that caused her to have resentment for OP, despite OP having no part in it (at least I suspect that was the case, while OP was still a child. Children often have to walk a fine tightrope between obeying their parents and not angering their siblings.)

1st story: NTA. He is the definition of a narcissistic trash, no, block him again. The grandparents needs to understand, blood is not always thicker than water. 2nd story: NTA. It's not hypocrite, it's either jealousy or favoritism. Anyway, still, she is being abusive to OP's sister, do NOT apologize, it will only enable her. I am glad OP and sis have a close relationship. Dad sounds like a doormat tho. 3rd story: NTA. It is OP's daughter dress, even if Lauren was also OP's kid, it would be kinda frick up to ask "can I take my dead sister's dress?". Tell husband "how would you feel if your kid died and her cousin ask to take a personal token that reminds you of her". 4th story: NTA. OP'sparents are extremely wrong, and going behind her back is fricked up and a betrayal. The cousin cna meet when they are older. OP and sis seem to at least be civil

Story 3 - Husband refuses to see OP's POV because he is dumb and wants to take the easy way out. He's all about treating the symptoms. He hasn't the ability or motivation to delve further to understand. He wants OP to fold so they can all be happy families even if that might just be temporary and not deal with more difficult dynamics. It's the same thing underpinning doormat father in story 2 where he tells them to apologize to keep the peace. What peace? He doesn't want to deal with the fallout and doesn't want his peace disrupted. Story 4 - Siblings might want to unite on this since they are both on the same page with this. Those grandparents mean well and I understand that but they are dumb as hell. They risk losing access to both sets of grandchildren.

story 1: what an AH (the father) is, so selfish, he lived on and didn't care for his daughter, now suddenly she must care for him and what he wants? story 2: is there such thing, a mother be jealous that her daughter is better "endowed" than her? story 3: the husband and step daughter look like carrion birds. story 4: OP and her sister should try to build bridges before anything else, this is their choice though and their parents have no word in it.

I think with the second story you got give your mother time and let her come to terms with that she may be going through our own insecurities not to mention she may actually have a problem with curvy women herself. In addition your dad is basically saying apologize to keep the peace because he doesn't want to deal with the drama of his two daughters going to war with his wife over something that may be trivial within the women so he's not trying to deal with it.

Story #4: Tell your parents, that as a parent yourself YOU will be the one to decide what is best for your children, and you will respect what your sister thinks is best for hers, then tell them you WILL be contacting your sister over their continued pressure. Contact your sister, a letter would be best. TELL her what your parents proposed to you. Tell her you understand your relationship with her was never close, and you don't hold it against her, and ASSURE her you WILL be respecting the boundries that SHE has set for HER children. Express that you still hold out hope for a more cordial relationship with her in the future, and let her know, that when it comes her children or yours, you WILL present a united front with her. Maybe, JUST maybe, that show of respect will soften her towards you down the road, but the only thing that is important NOW is to make your parents RESPECT both of you as parents and not interfere.

The Last Story I get the feeling that there's more to this than what the original poster is telling us. I do get the feeling that the grandparents want to have this family gathering of their children and grandchildren sitting together and playing together but the fact that her sister and her can't get along it's hurting the grandparents and their whole lives are pretty much they're not going to be at peace at all or making memories with all their grandchildren and siblings together. I get the sense that from the time the original poster was born the Sinister pretty much couldn't stand the fact that she wasn't center of attention anymore. My advice maybe when your parents have your side and they have your sister's kids let them be together and spend time with the grandkids but if both of you say no to that and they make cut you both out of your lives because they don't want to deal with your sibling rivalry if you're going to deprive them of their grandchildren because of the BS U both got with each other.

The 3rd story is really strange, the mother has built a shrine and entombed the wedding dress. She clearly isn't dealing with everything in a healthy way. Also her comment that she isn't that close to her step daughter is really telling. Even so, why not let her wear it? Wasn't she her sister too? Can't she Honor her memory in this way? We just heard her site of the story. But the other family members are grieving too. The father is right her Handling the situation isn't right. Also it's not even her dress, isn't her father also entitled to it. Sorry it all screams "get therapy now" her coping is really not healthy.
