Dark Phoenix isn't getting much love from critics, but as seems to be the case with X-Men movies, the audiences are feeling better about it. In honor of Fox's last run with the X-Men, here's everything right with the original X-Men! (2000)

The fact that Magneto's lot was more physically different makes sense, they would have been treated worse, probably by their own families, than the completely human looking X-men, and would generally sympathize with Magneto. edit: also, kind of interesting how Magneto, the villain, uses "by every means necessary", and the same phrase has popped up in modern politics..

People don’t realize that this movie alone spawned everything great about superhero films.. *-The Dark Knight trilogy* *- Marvel Cinematic Universe* *- Raimi Spider-Man films*

Raimi's first Spider-Man movie came out 2 years after, and there already was a trailer back in 2001. X-Men might have sPaWnEd a lot of good thing about superhero films, but not everything. This movie ain't really the reason superhero movies are a huge succes today, this movie helped but there was also Spider-Man 1 who made a huge amount of money...
@human.j.vitor9981
@human.j.vitor9981 4 жыл бұрын
@@lunettesdurdu4233 The first X-Men Movie did make success back then. That's why the franchise was still doing numbers and sequels, prequels... So the franchise maybe wasn't as huge as Spider-Man, but they did pave the way for the "serious" comicbook movies.

11:51 Took me a second to confirm that he's actually beaten, but he is... sort of. Magneto's King is in check, and has two options: Capture the pawn, or move to the adjacent space. But the pawn is defended by a knight, suggesting that the weaker mutants and humans are defended by the X-Men. As for why he doesn't just move to the adjacent place: That place is currently under attack by a bishop. No, not the time traveling, energy manipulating kind. The translucency makes it unclear what side the bishop is on, but it's assumed it's one of Charles'. In which case, it's a piece operating at a distance that can still limit Erik's options, likely interpreted as Logan himself. Or, given the First Class trilogy (FC, DOFP, Apocalypse), it could be Mystique playing wild card. In which case, Eric hasn't actually lost the war, just biding his time after losing the battle, which is what happens when Mystique breaks him out of his predicament. The moral of the story is translucent plastic/glass chess pieces are not ideal unless you stretch the metaphor. EDIT: 13:22 "Ah yes", it is indeed Xavier's bishop. Again, not the one with the M branded on his face. So the moral of the story is translucent clear materials don't film perfectly from all angles... Even if they do convey that Charles and Erik aren't as black and white as a normal chess set.

Its okay, Mystique gets one of the best lines in X2 to make up for not having much to do here. Nightcrawler: "You can make yourself look like anyone.. like normal, right? So why don't you all the time?" (I'm paraphrasing here, I don't remember Nightcrawler's setup exactly. Mystique: "Because we shouldn't HAVE to." And honestly, her "People like you are the reason I was scared to go to school as a child" is clear enough motivation for me.

14:36 This is a point that should've been expressed a bit more in your review, and possibly in the movies themselves. Magneto's original group were all people who would still be marginalized everywhere they went, if they went out in their default appearance. Even (the real) Mystique. It's not until Pyro joins late in the second movie that Magneto gets a follower who can "pass", and a white man at that.

One thing I LOVED about the first film was how creepy and eerie the tone was. Like we see rogue put someone in a coma during what should have been a cute scene, we saw Wolvy’s claws literally rip out of his fists. His creepy ass nightmare that led right into stabbing rogue. Seriously, Kelly’s whole arc? Then x2 came out and the creepy vibes were dropped for a lighter more superhero-y tone. I’m sad to this day that this is what happened.

One of the things that sold me on this movie was in that opening dialogue between Xavier and Magneto, it's shot like comic panels are drawn. If you look at he framing and the shot setups *they leave visual space for the speech balloons* It is most obvious as Magneto is walking away at the end of the sequence. You can almost see the panels as he walks away. "We are the future, Charles" (speech balloon at the top) next panel "Not them" speech balloon at the middle, Magneto a little further away. Next panel "They no longer matter" Speech balloon at the bottom, Magneto at the far point of the walkway. That was when it sold me. It was shot like a comic book.

That mutants were discriminated against when the... hundreds? ...however many other superheroes weren't (in the same way) was always irksome for me. Putting them in a film series where they were the only people with powers was a good workaround.
@billyb2122
@billyb2122 4 жыл бұрын
it wasn't a work around, it was literally the only thing they could do as they didn't have the rights to many other characters the ones they did have ended up being stand alone. Comic book movies were a risky business at that time and a shared universe was unheard of. Also mutants being treated differently from other people with powers is not all that difficult of an issue to explain. Heroes like Spider-Man and Captain America are one in a million. Unique. Special. They're exceptional because they're rare and choose to be good. Mutants number in the millions and could be anybody. They could have as just as many motives to explain why they use their powers the way that do. Not to mention when their powers emerge its often randomly and destructively. Simply manifesting powers puts others at risk. And again there millions of them. Mutants are unpredictable.

One of my first DVDs was the 1.5 edition of _X-Men_ which added all the deleted scenes back into the film. It really does make a superior film. Contrasts this with the Rogue Cut of DOFP which makes that film more cumbersome for me.

Long story short, probably the greatest conversation I will ever have. David Hayter! Solid Snake! A Fan of Doctor Who! I even recommended a book to him, which he said he'd read!

Awesome video! I just have one thing to comment on... 12:20 I think here you are misunderstanding the intentions of showing the Nazi camps. Sure it provides a (tenuous) connection between the modern mutants and jews during WW2, but also provides Magneto's character with motivation. You commented on this during the First Class win video; Magneto is recognizing what is happening as the beginning of how it happened for the jews. While that view may be somewhat malformed, it is what causes him to be evil, which sadly reinforces the opposing side's beliefs about mutants. This is actually kind of relevant to today, as both sides of arguments like Conservative vs Liberal in the US rages on as both sides go to extremes and nothing ends up going well.
