Fuel and oil filters should never be pre-filled. When you pre-fille a filter, one would generally fill through the center of the filter. The center of the filter is the "clean" side of the filter. By pre-filling through the center, you are introducing potentially contaminated oil into the system. Couple that with no benefit because fluid systems (on Cat machines) are designed to operate properly on start-up with no oil in the filter. Maintenance is a leading source of contamination. Before you crucify me, I've worked on or around Cat machines for over 20 years and currently lead the technical support team at a Cat dealer.

An old electrician tought me back in the day to put down cardboard under your work area while doing an oil change. It not only soaks up the spilled oil but it provides a softer/cleaner surface to kneel on.

If you havent already, make sure there is a minimum of 3 months of food for each person in your household. If youre on a budget, buy rice, beans, and Armour Treet cans, tuna, and get those 5 gallon water bottles from home depot. Seriously, dont wait for everything to break down... get on it now. Again, 3 months MINIMUM. Buy more if you can afford it

If this is the first 500hr service for this skid steer, you may want to change the final drives’ oil also. There would be a fair amount of break in material build up in the final drives by the first 500hr interval.

You should check your maintenance book and see if there is a second filter location. I am not familiar with that model of skid steer, but I have honestly always been very well attended by Caterpillar parts especially if you gave them the serial number. Those machines are built and each component is basically matched to the serial number.

Yes, never trust opened oil vs the cost of an engine. I recently had a close call only saved by the introduction of the opaque oil pitcher. I had drained used brake fluid into an empty quart oil container and put it back on the shelf, thinking I would remember that it was waste and not oil. 3 months later I am doing an oil change and opened the used brake fluid container and almost dumped it into the engine. For some reason I stopped and filled the oil pitcher and noted the blue color of the 'oil' and how thin it was. I contaminated 1 gal of synthetic oil but saved contamination of an engine. Penny-wise....

I found it essential to warehouse stuff in advance once we finally got the stuff that works. Prevenative maintenance parts and even fluids. Most machines use almost all spec. Fluids for everything now and you can't just get them anywhere. Also nice to make stickers to note the parts , fluid specs. And volumes for quick reference or like we all dread someone else is on the equipment when something goes wrong. Needed more fuel filters on hand than anything. When things go wrong there it's really wrong.

Regarding the low quality help in parts departments, the way places want to pay the parts guy(s), a guy can’t afford to have a one-income family. I enjoyed being in parts, but our family grew and my trad-wife stays home with our four kids. The good employees can’t afford to stay in the line of work, and you won’t see good help there until attitudes change.

The comment towards the end really spoke to me of dealing with other people's incompetence, lack of work ethic. I switched positions at my job a year ago which involves cleaning others messes working in a warehouse and usually i don't mind it. It has some perks but management has been buckling down on the 5 of us. And I'm at a breaking point. I can only clean up so much and when people don't have any repercussions for making a spill or mess. I'm at blame for not doing enough when in fact I'm not the one damaging the product or creating the work I take care of.

Cody, sadly you are spot on (as usual) regarding the degrading quality standards compared to yester-year. Maybe the old folks when I was young said the same thing? On a side note, I've been a professional heavy equipment mechanic for 40 years now and you are correct, things are unnecessarily packed into much tighter spaces now in the name of "sleek & efficient" redesign. The young & upcoming engineers need to be mechanics for a few years before they are allowed to design machines & equipment. I won't hold my breath. Only 8 - 10 years to go before retirement, God willing.....

As a former cat pm tech, when taking an oil sample the oil should be hot and taken from the dipstick tube. That’s what cat recommends. To make you life easier take off the Beauty cover it gives you a little more room to work.
