The evolution R255 SMS is a sliding mitre saw that can cut wood, metal or plastic with the supplied blade, you can also swap the blade over for a diamond disc which then enables this saw to cut masonry. Screwfix sell this saw as the Evolution 052-0001.
The specification for this model are as follows-
Moto4 220-240V 2000W
Dust port diameter 35mm
Cable length 2M
Maximum cutting capacities
Mild steel plate - Max thickness 6mm (1/4 inch)
Mild steel box section - Max wall thickness 3mm (1/8 inch)
Wood - Max section 300mm X 80mm
Blade dimension 255mm (10 inch)
Bore 22.5mm ( 1 inch )
This machine is superb and can easily cut wood, metal plastic or masonry with the supplied blade. This saw has some improvements over the older Rage 3 versions including power cord storage.

Great video as always. No nonsense, no mucking around, just a good honest reviews with loads of real examples of cutting different things. Just what I want. I wish all reviews on KZfaq were like this 👍 Looks a great machine. I have two evolution machines already. I really like them. I wish by big 305mm dewalt had an electric break. I was disappointed to see it didn’t having forked out over £600 for it 5 years ago. Apparently they (Dewalt) stropping using electronic brakes since they “always failed”

How does the accuracy hold up for repeated angles/bevelled cuts? I'm in the market for my first mitre saw to do some skirting boards and architrave. Some of the reviews I've seen (might not be this particular saw) comment about lack of accuracy. I'm sure none of the walls will be square so will need an angle measurer and cut individually. Also do I need a double bevel saw? Thanks for any advice.
@ultimatehandyman
@ultimatehandyman 6 жыл бұрын
It is fine for what I need. I believe Evolution have done a lot of work to get the saws more accurate, which is why they have been bringing out newer versions of their existing machines. A double bevel machines means you don't have to flip over the work piece when doing bevel cuts, but the double bevel machines are more expensive. Thanks for the comment

Hi Chris, I've cut metal, then wood, then metal again and then wood and to be honest I have never noticed the blade going dull. As always an informative video. I currently own and use the Evolution Rage3db and find it an excellent machine. However, when cutting mild steel my blade seems to dull quickly even if I am using the blue (steel) blade. Any advice on how to mitigate this?
@ultimatehandyman
@ultimatehandyman 6 жыл бұрын
I always try to position the steel so that the blade is cutting the thinnest dimension of the steel, so for example if cutting some 50mm by 6mm mild steel bar, I try and clamp it so that it's cutting through the thinnest part of the steel. If you cut it the other way the chips can cause the blade to dull faster as the swarf can't be removed as effectively. Also these blades do not like galvanised steel (for some reason). I hope this helps ;-) Thanks for the comment

I bought one of these this weekend. It makes a weird sound on startup. I think its due to the spacer on the inner side of the where the blade attaches. When I run the motor with no blade it sounds very smooth but when the blade is on and the spacer in place - which is a small cylinder spacer it just seems to make a weird rattling sound to start with. Do you experience the same? Is this normal?

Hi, just trying to compare this particular model with the double-bevel version (R255SMS-DB+) , and I'm wondering.... apart from this R255SMS model being only single-bevel, and having slightly inferior cutting capacities (eg... 80mm Vs 90mm), ...are there any other differences, or anything that the more expensive DB+ version boasts over this one? Any helpful pointers much appreciated!
@ultimatehandyman
@ultimatehandyman 4 жыл бұрын
If I remember rightly the DB version is much better, but it depends what you are doing to justify the additional cost. Being able to bevel in both directions saves a lot of work if you are cutting long pieces of timber, as you have to turn them round with the single bevel machine. If I remember rightly the DB also just feels like a quality saw compared to the SMS. I use the DB most of the time now and I love it, but the SMS is adequate for most people. Thanks for the comment 👍

@ultimatehandyman
@ultimatehandyman 3 жыл бұрын
The thickness of the blade? The laser shows where the blade will cut, so if you need a piece 400mm in length, you need to measure the 400mm from the edge of the laser line. I don't use the laser to be honest, a pencil mark is much better IMHO
@wgh011
@wgh011 3 жыл бұрын
You can also set the laser, I have mine set so the laser line is in line with the teeth on the left of the blade. Takes a bit of doing but not hard to do, could be set to the right of the blade teeth if preferred. Most of my cuts are steel so 0.5mm off is never an issue, but better than the width of the blade. Ultimate H' - I've watched a fair few of your videos which are well made and informative. This is the first one I've seen that disappoints me. Firstly, I assume Evolution gave you the saw to review - but you don't mention this in the intro'? If they haven't - and you paid for it with your own money - then it's the best advert they (Evolution) could possibly wish for. Full disclosure please! You provide a good explanation of the saw's features and benefits , but I hoped you would use your extensive knowledge and experience to point out the machine's limitations and faults - not just its plus points. Also, it looks new, so I suspect you haven't used it long enough to work out it's pro's and all of its cons. These comments are intended as constructive criticism which I hope you will take on board to enable you to make more balanced and transparent videos when reviewing tools etc. in the future.

If you only cut wood the Dewalt might be the better option as it enables you to cut deeper material. I have the Dewalt and the Evolution Rage 3DB and to be honest for what I do I normally use the Evolution most of the time. Yes, it does. I’m afraid I don’t often demonstrate the lasers, as they are something I never use, as they are a gimmick. I normally just align the blade with the cut line (no need for a laser) 👍

What is that dust collection contraption you have set up when doing the masonry cuts?
@ultimatehandyman
@ultimatehandyman 6 жыл бұрын
I use a vacuum cleaner connected to a Omni Cyclone, which leaves all of the dust in the tub. This means you never have to clean the vacuum's filter ever again as all the stuff vacuumed up stays in the tub connected to the Omni Cyclone. I have to point out that some of the masonry had been left outside, so it was damp when cut- hence the low amount of dust. When I get chance I'll make a video about the Omni Cyclone ;-)

Will it cut a 4 inch sleeper?
@ultimatehandyman
@ultimatehandyman 3 жыл бұрын
Not in one pass, you would have to cut one side, then flip it over to cut the other side. I'm not 100% certain, but I think the Dewalt 12" saws will cut them in one pass (if I remember rightly) kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bMV_jMV40bbdf4E.html&t

@@mattseymour8637 Yes, you'll need a 12" blade and it will have to be a sliding mitre saw. Unfortunately there are not many 12" sliding mitre saws to choose from, have you considered using a chain saw?

I was a bit disappointed at how long the blades last on mine actually. Just use it for wood now and back to the angle grinder for steel.

Ultimate Handyman mild steel, mainly square tubing no more than 3-4mm thick. Would be interesting to see if the Diablo steel demon blades can be used on them.... have to go check some rpm’s......

The Rage 2 is better for cutting stuff like that, but then again it is designed to cut stuff like that all day long. The only time I knackered up a blade quickly was after cutting this piece of channel (but I had cut a lot of steel beforehand) kzfaq.info/get/bejne/epZoes-IsN2riKc.html I bet the blade would last longer if you made a V block to hold the box section, so that the blade cuts through the box section on the corner. I was told that it's the chip removal that can cause the blade to dull and the chips are removed quicker if you cut through the box section so that might make the blade last longer. Thanks for the comment

I think they have overlooked designating blades for heavy stone and metal cuts. I think this is a shortcoming on their part

I had the older version, cut through about a dozen bits of 2mm box section, blade was done, marketing this thing as metal cutting saw is UTTER SHITE, it's fine as a mitre saw cutting through the odd nail here n there, but a metal saw? NO, mine went back 4 days after buying and bought a Femi bandsaw, 15 years of welding and fabrication experience.

They're good. This is the PRO version, I have the standard one (it's green trimmed and a little smaller, but still a good tool). If anyone buys one, just remember when you first buy it to set the blade to 90 degrees using a set square or onboard LASER; the manual doesn't make it very clear as it looks close enough you'd not notice until your mitre joints don't line up!
