1:26 - kind of weird to switch from Bright Mind to a different brand considering what makes Bright Mind different from Purina 's other senior products

Sorry for questioning the person's decision to switch product lines. Afriend of mine has a senior dog on Bright Mind because she wanted a few more years of doing sports with him. The other senior dogs in her care did not receive Bright Mind since they don't need the special formulation.

The Select recipe in the Farmina line is sold out everywhere which was better than the senior if I remember correctly right. I love these comparison videos

What about using the Heritage Ranch turkey and Brown rice weight management for adults and use it for seniors versus The Heritage Ranch for seniors salmon and brown rice. Here in Texas

I can’t open the senior nutrient panel but the adult one is pretty close. It really doesn’t matter what they name the food, it only matters what the numbers are

Most senior formulas are low calorie, it’s not probably going to say weight loss per se on the bag.

Hello Dr Rea, thank you for this analysis. I was considering switching my dog to the Purina Senior Line because he seems to have developed some environmental allergies and I thought that maybe switching food might help, but I think I better not!!! I am currently feeding my 7.5-year-old Cocker Spaniel the : Science Diet Adult 7+ Perfect Digestion Chicken, Whole Oats & Brown Rice Recipe Dog Food. The nutrient levels are the following, based on dry matter basis: Protein 21 % Fat 13 % Carbohydrate / NFE 57.9 % Crude Fiber 2.2 % Calcium 0.92 % Phosphorus 0.65 % So, even SD is over the Calcium limit for a senior dog, and this particular recipe is the best one of all their Senior’s line, all other recipes having even higher Calcium levels. I have looked at many other brands and SD seems to be, by far, the best balanced food for a 7+ year old dog. However, I am really puzzled as to know why not one brand out there is able to meet the Calcium requirements for a senior dog??? 🥰🐶🐾

It’s probably very costly to fine tune it, but I can’t say for sure. Just because it’s ideal doesn’t mean it’s possible. Also changing diet won’t help with environmental allergies so I wouldn’t make a change for that reason.

Maybe an interesting one royal canin aging line - they have a small, med, large all starting from a different age. I would also love a comparison video on sensitive skin/stomach lines and include Purina salmon and rice :) I know hills has a line, and I’m sure there’s some other popular ones. Also Eukanuba, I think they have all the diff age appropriates. That food seems to be slowly disappearing from stores.

After your review on Costco brands. Dogs are seniors. Just switched to Hills SD Speciality Senior Vitality Adult 7+ Please your review. Dogs were fine on costco but felt not very good for my seniors. Right move? Mineral analysis ???

If I were to pick between those two, I would choose Pro Plan, not only because it underwent a feeding trial, but because it also includes MCTs which have some evidence that they can improve cognition.

I spoke with a Purina vet (not sales rep) a few years ago and she said she was surprised with all the great research and results with the diet that they didn't make it a veterinary diet. She was convinced it was a great food. It uses fatty acids where Hills cognitive diet uses antioxidants and Lipoic Acid.

After doing a lot of research trying to find a senior food with calcium levels below .9 the food I finally settled on surprisingly was Iams proactive health mini chunks adult formula lamb and rice with an as fed calcium of .75% and phosphorus of .68% the protein 27.7% is too high though but in general this food does seem to fit the bill better than most senior recipes. What are your thoughts?

@@AnimalDocRea Is there any meat in Iam's grain train? I found calcium 1.8% and phosphorus 1.35% DMB. I'm sure carbs are high, as well. Why not use Hill's Lamb and Rice? It's about 90 cents a pound more, but seems a much healthier option for a senior dog. Personally, I would find a homemade recipe that is much cheaper than both, but I would not say that on your video. Happy Caturday!

@@edschulhof6303 Hi thanks for your input but I have no idea where you are getting your information from as it's very different than mine. My information comes directly from Mars canada and is only for the lamb and rice mini chunks and was based on as fed, to compare it to Hills small bites lamb and rice it needs to be converted into dry matter. Iams dry matter is calcium .83 and phosphorous .76 compared to Hills 1.09 and 1.86. As for price here in Canada the Hills small bites lamb and rice 15 lbs is 78.99 and the Iams lamb and rice mini chunks is 32.97 for 15 lbs at Walmart. That's 3.06 a pound more or 46.02 a bag. As for the "grain train" two of my four small breed dogs get very loose stools when fed food that is higher in "Meat" such as Orijen not to mention all the dry food with higher meat content that I've found are way out of balance when it comes to nutrients. As for the homemade diet, I guess you are far more capable than I am. I was unable to get my mineral levels spot on even using a supplement.

A friend feeds his 5 year old wire fox terrier puppy food, he says “ it’s cheaper no harm in puppy food High end foods, don’t have age categories, Origen , acana, raw food It’s all marketing when they divide age groups All life stages is for all ages, puppyadult and senior Not just puppy food” What do u think about this 😮

Unfortunately he is incorrect, it’s “all life stages” that is the marketing. I’ve gone over this in many videos.

Off topic, but maybe do a video on water safety with dogs. There is algae and other microorganisms in lakes and streams that can make a dog sick or even kill them in a very short time. Perhaps you can suggest preventive measures to take, or first aid for a dog that becomes ill? Don't mean to be a downer, but with summer weather, people will be taking their pets in the water. Hmmm, I find it "funny" that those levels of protein/calcium/phosphorus of the Farmina's Senior kibble, is not as senior-friendly as their Farmina Quinoa "Skin & Coat" herring formula, which has a protein number of 23% and the same calcium/phosphorus levels as their Senior formula.

Sometimes yes and sometimes no. Although there is no AAFCO lifestage, there is definitely a unique nutrient profile for optimal nutrition
