Sugarloaf - 4,249′ (1295m)
Spaulding - 4010' (1222m)
Foo, SpAcEkAcE, and I headed out at the crack of dawn to hike Sugarloaf and Spaulding Mountains. Two more 4K peaks off the list.
It was a great trip. The trails were rocky and steep which made them a blast to climb. Both peaks are in the high peaks region in western Maine and Sugarloaf in particular offers a spectacular view of the surrounding region. There's a nice clear view of the Bigelow's which we hiked in a previous video. We also took a few minutes to explore the abandoned ski lodge at the top of Sugarloaf.
Just after summiting Spaulding SpAcEkAcE injured his leg which extended our decent must past sunset. This was a first night-hike for each of us which ended up being pretty cool.
We all had a great time despite the injuries and setbacks. We've got a great blooper reel on this video - be sure to catch it at the end of the video.

It's a pretty unique place. There are 6 different 4000'+ peaks within just a few miles of each other and another 2 just a few miles up the road. Beyond that the river valley really makes these mountains stand out.

What you explored was the top terminal for the Gondola opened in 1966 and torn down in 1997. Replaced by more efficient chair lifts.

Thanks Bob. I figured it was something along those lines but it's good to know for certain. Those it may not have been as efficient as chair lifts it seemed like it would have been a much cooler way up the mountain. Happy Trails!

Many thanks - he's back on his feet and back to 100%. Best of luck at the Grafton loop - I've only hiked the east side of the loop but it was tougher than I expected. With some luck, I'll get the western half done this fall.
