Great insight into these rare and under appreciated models. Thanks Tom.

Hey Tom, just had my 85 Mondial QV at the local Ferrari dealers here in OZ, (I won't say which state) for it was under powered. They traced it to a faulty, or worn out throttle body, which they suggested to rebuild. I agreed for the work to be carried out. After the work was completed, they were going to reverse the Ferrari off the lift. So the mechanic got in and started the engine...it idled good. Then he put it in to reverse gear and moved it about 10 inches pushed the clutch back in and the engine immediately revved to max...as far as it could go, but only for a couple of seconds and the clutch pressure plate exploded. Parts went through the bell housing, through the engine cover, through the back window and lodged in to the roof and its lining. The damage is so extensive we are looking at a write-off. This happened two days ago. To say I'm devastated to lose my old friend after 15 years of love and joy, is an understatement. Oh, and luckily no one was injured, or killed. The damage to the car is only a disaster, however, a death would have been a terrible tragedy. Thanks for your videos !! Marc

Hi Marc, THIS IS SO TERRIBLE! I am so sorry, and can't imagine the loss, especially all the work you put into the car. Hopefully, the process of writing off this loss will move into the next chapter of ownership with another car. I wish you the best of luck, and please let me know if there is anything I can do to help from the States.

Had an earlier 400 and loved the car, but the maintenance (and attendant costs) were insane. I've owned Ferraris for many years and do the vast majority of my own work...but the 400 was just too much trouble to service. My 330 2+2, by comparison, is a breeze to work on, if not so "modern". I stilll think the 356/400 is one of the handsomest of the newer Ferraris (I'm an old guy, so "newer" is a relative term), but even my long-time Ferrari wrench hates to work on them. Compared to my old Daytona (which I owned LONG before they became precious collectors' items), both the cost and hassle of the maintenance is crazy...yet (or perhaps because of this) the car is worth a fraction of a Daytona's price.

I personally prefer to work on the 2 cam Ferrari engines. They're relatively easy to work on, and access is pretty good. After FIAT took over some of the engineering design of the road cars, they started to get stupid in their packaging. My cutoff for the cars I work on is 1972, so these 365GTC/4s are right at the limit of my tolerance and patience! Thanks for watching.

Hopefully the 365GT4 owner will fix the motor rather than swapping it or parting it out.

The cost of an engine rebuild can easily match or exceed the value of this particular model! Thanks for watching.

Is the filter part of the housing? Interesting how those end stacks are right up in the filter media. Ferrari must have been _really_ pressed for space to go this route.
@tomyangnet5 ай бұрын
No, the filter is separate just like any normal wire reinforced filter. Many people have replaced these with soft structure filters, but the original equipment were these filters. Thanks for watching.

What would be the main cause for the float to get stuck ? Is it by chance or due to lack of Weber service ? Is it likely to happen on a well kept example ?
@tomyangnet5 ай бұрын
Trash in the fuel, or residue from old fuel from disuse. If you carefully bump the starter a couple engine revolutions, you should be able to avoid this catastrophe. A good car with regular use shouldn't have this issue.

Hydrolocked cylinder cracks the cylinder? I'm not a Ferrari expert, so this is intriguing. Ive seen my share of bent rods and even lifted heads/pulled studs. Hard to imagine you can crack a cylinder *_at the deck_* (where the fluid will be compressed)
@tomyangnet5 ай бұрын
It happens. I think the difference is with a V-12, there is more of a chance of a cylinder on ignition stroke to turn the engine with enough force to crack an adjacent cylinder filled with fuel. Thanks for watching.

Where does the fuel drip to in the downdraft carburetors? Does it just strip on top of the engine?
@tomyangnet5 ай бұрын
On a car with the normal downdraft carbs the overflowing fuel bowls drip into the V of the engine, and usually eventually down onto the ground. On early Ferrari V-12 engines with spark plugs on the inside of the V, they installed "drip trays" under each carburetor to avoid a fire, but that's a subject for another video! Thanks for watching.

I have customer have 365gtc with weber 40dfi it have smoke on idle all the time (unborn fuel) the only time it will stop smoking if I close the idle fuel needle, but once I open it and the cylinder start working it will smoke immediately. Is it normal for these engines to keep smoking? Thank you
@tomyangnet5 ай бұрын
No, these engines don't normally smoke all the time, unless something is wrong. You should be able to turn the idle screw out one to one and a half turns out to tune at idle depending on the size of the idle jets. People often change jet sizes on their carburetors thinking they can solve their issues without making sure everything else is set properly. Un-burnt fuel can also be something wrong with ignition or timing. Check the jet sizes and don't just trust what they are labelled. I've seen them drilled out to a larger size. The owner's manual will tell you what the stock jet sizes should be. I would start there.
@MrPlutoGalaxy5 ай бұрын
@@tomyangnet I reduced the idle jet the smoke is less,but still smoking. I will check the owner manual if there is something about the idle jet size. Also I replaced the ignition points with preTronix kit the engine running much better and 100% no issues

I alwys knew that Italians like the British tend to build cars in a way that servicing them is ridiculosly complicated. I heard of a newer Bentley. In order to change the aircon compressor you hav to diconnect the fenders, hang the engine on an engine hoist and disconnect the entire front end. I used to like those 365 GTC4s, But as you show the engine compartment and all the nonsense, I would NEVER like to own one. Even if I could afford one.

That is some awful, dreadful engineering. Post scriptum: now that I thought about it some more, I'm not sure that it could even be called engineering. I cannot imagine that a good, competent, conscientious engineer would ever design something so flawed and failure prone.
