The trouble with Alfa Romeos of that era, and it looks like Ferraris too, is the cable operated electric windows. The cables bind up on the various pulleys and cannot slide across them properly, especially if the pulleys are seized and won't turn when the electric motor tries to wind the window cables up and down. Those cables look so tight that one can pluck them like guitar strings. As you discovered, that car has a substantial voltage drop/current loss in the window switch and wiring connections between the switch and the door's window motor. Wiring in 2 relays is the only method to solve the problem, as you did.

The later Ferraris like this 365 had a spring tensioner, which makes the cable so tight, but it's still a silly design! Thanks for watching!

I HATE those Italian windows run by cables. Normally a scissor system is much less likely to fail. And a broken cable is terrible to replace. I happened to me in Italy in my Fiat during an extremely strong thunder storm . The window dropped to the bottom and the car got full of water in record time. I did not have tape on me and had to drive south 500 miles more. I despereately tried to pull the glass up and tried to jam the window with a screwdriver. I was shocked two years ago then the same nonsense happened on my old BMW. I did not even know that this car had the same stupid system. At least I had strong tape to close the window. The tape had to be replaced every few days. I sold this old junker for a few hundred $. That solved this problem for me. Very interesting video and how you show the fix to the much to common ground and wiring problem of classic Italian vehicles.

Whenever I don't have to get into restringing a cable system on these cars, it's a good day! I often wondered if these companies looked inside other car manufacturer's door to see how they could have engineered their mechanisms better, or was it just plain obstinance? They kept this design for two decades!

A very elegant solution. Maserati Biturbo with slow windows and a cable that is pulled/pushed through a circular channel, for lack of a better way to describe it. But a contributing factor is reduced voltage getting to the motor, that you've solved!

I jammed rolls of tape and other soft stuff into the door jam. But the ball trick is very interesting and new to me. Even after working on cars for over fourty years. I would misplace the ball chaotic as I am. Guess I would have to buy a dozen balls.

Hello Tom, it‘s funny you just treated the subject of slow windows. The same issue cropped up on my 1987 Testarossa, but my driver side window took over a minute to retract. There is a guy in England who sells special relay kits to solve the problem. I will see if I can find his contact. My mechanic is just installing the relay kit for me now. I will contact him tomorrow to see the results.
@tomyangnet
@tomyangnet Ай бұрын
I've seen these kits, but have not tried them yet. A handful of relays and some wire is all you really need to do the same thing. Running isolated power to the motors is the trick. I hope your Testarossa isn't suffering from the other common problem of the cooling fans and the fuse panel... Thanks for watching and good luck!
@tilnilken1406

@@tomyangnet Actually my mechanic just diagnosed the issue being the fusebox. Do you have a good source/solution for it?
@tomyangnet
@tomyangnet Ай бұрын
@@tilnilken1406 that’s what I suspected on your testarossa. The fuse panel is poorly designed and melts from the high current loads. I’ve seen several solutions being offered from redesigned fuse panels to replacement units. I think whichever way you go, it’s going to be labor intensive. It’s a problem that needs to addressed as the next thing to fail is the cooling fan circuit which will cause your engine to overheat. Good luck!

Great video. I fear that the slow windows on my '87 Mondial are due to hardened grease on the pulley mechanism, and that the only way to fix it properly is to disassemble the entire Rube Golberg device that is the Ferrari window mechanism, clean and regrease it -- and put it together again with the proper tension. Moreover, I don't have the huge cutouts in the door panel that you have in the 365. But I'm definitely going to look into the ingenious relay set up that worked so well here.
@tomyangnet
@tomyangnet Ай бұрын
Take lots of pictures and take notes on how the cables cross if you plan on unstringing the cables. Sometimes you can detatch the windows from the cables and move the mechanism up and down while cleaning the grease and freeing things up without taking the cables off. They can become quite the rat's nest! Good luck!

If you have an 87 Mondial (as I do) you dont have the earlier goofy cable set up. Its a slightly more normal regulator that still gets gummed up. I've pulled mine, cleaned and regreased them, and they work like a charm. The rear quarter windows on a cabriolet, also are on a regulator, but they are much more problematic due to the design of the piece (Fiat).

@@howardscott7521 Thanks for this -- I assumed they were the same as the 308's and the earlier Mondials. I'll look into it -- first seeing if Tom's suggestion of removing the window is a possibility.

@@susannero6401 Its not real hard to remove the window, although it may be a little more challenging on a coupe. No experience with one of those. I have heard tales of people swapping later Mondial doors onto their earlier models just to remove that crazy cable setup from the equation. Seems a bit extreme, but who knows.

Have you considered using marine grade relays in the doors because of the water intrusion/exposure problem?

I see that the glove compartment is removed. Is this the proper way to access the connections to the relay board on the firewall?? What's the best way to remove the fuse holders and glove box??
@tomyangnet
@tomyangnet Ай бұрын
Removing the glove box makes access to the fuse panel easier. It's unscrews from the hinge. The fuse panel unscrews with two screws. You shouldn't need to access the relay board on the other side of the firewall. You can use left and right window circuits on the fuse panel to run the power to the relays in the door. The stock wiring will still supply power to the window switches, but they will only operate the low amp side of the relays. Hope this makes sense.

@@tomyangnet Thank You for the prompt response. I'm not working on the windows, My driver's side ignition intermittently drops out. I've rebuilt everything distributors, new coils, resisters, wiring from ignition boxes, plug wires. It's almost like the power to that side of the ignition fails. I've swapped ignition boxes side to side. The problem stays on the driver's side. I wanted to get a look at the business side of the relay panel thinking there might be a loose power feed to the driver's ignition box. I'm running the AEC10C Blue Box. Any thoughts??

@@geffen928 I would normally blame those flaky Marelli ignition boxes, but since problem stays on the same side after a swap, I can't blame the box! Double check the ground on the driver's side ignition box. On some cars, the box is mounted on a fiberglass portion of the inner fender, and the ground wire can be disconnected without knowing. If that doesn't solve it, I would run direct power to the ignition box and see if it cuts out to confirm there is a problem with the power feed to the box. Good luck!

@@tomyangnet Yes, I was thinking of running an alternate power feed. Do you know which relay / fuse controls the power ignition boxes. Do both boxes have the same feed?? As always, I appreciate your help.
