@@JB6GD684 not really. Strangers was just a prequel to final fantasy 1. It kinda explains what happens before the Warrior of light existed and how he became to be. I love FF14 to death, but lets not pretend that isn't't exactly how it looks in ARR. No one is going to believe what the game becomes after this if they don't experience it for themselves. And for that, you have the chance of people hating the first 30 hours and never coming back. Which is completely fair, idc what anyone says. 30 hours is more than enough time to decide if a game is for you.

I feel like for Japan. Yes, these results make much more sense. It may be surprising but 14 is WAY bigger in Japan than most would expect. 7 is still popular and tickles the nostalgia in Japan as well but not as much as how 7 hits outside of Japan. Also what I find absolutely hilarious is when we talk about a "real" FF game... 14 fits the original mold of a Final FANTASY more than 7 XD 7 is the greatest odd one out in that list. Specifically with it's more "modern/industrial" setting closer to our real world. Whereas 14 has more of that whimsical "proper" Fantasy feel.

Japanese meme culture is pretty funny. But as a long time Final Fantasy fan, FFXIV does deserve to be there. It's a little unfair because most games don't get the chance of reboot itself and then doing five story expansions in order to get a shot at a solid and compelling story, but FFXIV did do just that. Emet is hands down the best villain in the series, beating out even Kefka. Japan simping for Graha is also totally understandable.
@lethaltoconcrete2194
@lethaltoconcrete2194 Жыл бұрын
I do like Kefka -- he's a fun and charismatic villain -- but he isn't as like, mindblowingly good as hardcore FF6 fans insist. He's basically just Final Fantasy Joker, and what backstory is there is incredibly thinly sketched. And again, that's fine -- he's a fun villain. And back in the SNES days, the competition was less intense. But Emet-Selch is orders of magnitude more compelling as a character. I even prefer Sephiroth (less because I think he's a super deep character and more because the horror movie pacing of his gradual reveal in the original FF7 was amazing, and it did a great job of building him up as this incredibly intimidating presence in the story).
@cardbutton892
@cardbutton892 Жыл бұрын
What I think is fascinating about Emet winning is that Japanese Audiences don't normally care too much about the villains of a story. Its the Heroes journey, the focus should be the Hero and all that. So the idea that VILLAIN from 14 managed to top the lists of a Japanese poll is downright staggering. The dude earned that spot.

That was definitely a weird point to try arguing, as if being an appealing game somehow was argument against it lol. I do think he was close, but not quite on, to a valid point though. While all game's are designed to attract players, not all games are designed to keep players repetitively playing the same game for 10 years or better. MMO's like FF14 and WoW have been adding onto the same story for years, making thousands upon thousands of changes, and there's certainly some questionable story moments and weak characters to show for it. I'd put 14 in my top five if I absolutely had to compare it with single player FF titles because of the incredible gameplay, the beautiful world they've built, and all the social aspects of it; but I definitely think there's stronger stories in other FF games, and I would never personally compare MMOs to single player games. They're almost entirely different experiences to me.

I feel like FFXIV does get an inherent advantage for being a fan favorite not only because it’s an MMO, but because it seems to be an easy “gateway” Final Fantasy game. I know I personally began to have interest in the series after I finished the FFXIV MSQ, and I can say the same for many of the people I know who play the game as well.
@simoncerda9267
@simoncerda9267 Жыл бұрын
I don't think 14 is an "easy gateway" at all into Final Fantasy for several reasons. 1) Unless you're already used to MMO's, you have to learn an entire new control scheme and style of gameplay. Compare that to easy to understand turn-based or ATB gameplay that most people can easily handle, even if it's not everyone's cup of tea. 2) Even if you rush MSQ you're still looking at about 200-300 hours to go from ARR to Endwalker (Which I would considered an actually finished story). Compare that to early FFs that are around 20 hours long, or even the newest ones which are longer but are still 50-70 hours. It's a smaller commitment. 3) You have to go through ARR story, which even if it can be enjoyable, most people would agree it's more of a filter than a gateway. And if you want to "get into final fantasy" you probably don't want to skip the story. 4) A lot of people don't like the idea of having to play with others, so even if 14 can be played mostly solo, having to queue for dungeons with others is a downside (yes, duty support now exists, but Trials are still multiplayer and if you want to fly, you'll still need to queue to other dungeons) 5) There's a free trial, yes. One in which you can play all the way up to the award-winning expassion Heavensward until level 60 for free without any restrictions on playtime. But after that... monthly subscription. Another downside to start it.
@Kakomine
@Kakomine Жыл бұрын
@@simoncerda9267 My bad, my target for the “gateway” Final Fantasy comment was mostly aimed at MMO players, and that is the viewpoint I was coming from. From the standpoint of someone who does not play MMOs or does not like the commitment or subscription fee, then yes, you are right.

@@simoncerda9267 I've seen some streamers start with FFXIV and then later try other the Pixel Remasters of I - VI and then going through the others including VII:Remake, it's been a lot of "oh wait, this is where FFXIV got that from?!" In my case though, I grew up on FFIV and VI for SNES then VII through XII on PS1/2 so fighting the Garleans in FFXIV felt like being in the Returners against the Gestahl Empire, hearing Terra's theme while riding your own magitek armor, Doma with Cyan's theme, going to the freaking moon and all the other references just hit harder. so in one way, it is a gateway FF, and in another, it's a theme park that still manages to tell it's own story.

But it builds up a villain well, it successfully introduces a wide cast of characters and factions that would later be fleshed out individually, and it has one of the best _endings_ of any expansion in the game. After the Bloody Banquet I wanted to play _more,_ I wanted to know where the story was heading, how characters would change, etc. The only other expansion ending to drive my interest like that was the bridge from Stormblood into Shadowbringers, if ya know why you know why.

It takes a hell of a writer(s) to build up an enemy to be so evil, so villainous only to then make you see that they aren't evil at all, just highly misguided and what they do isn't out of maliciousness but a desire to restore what they lost. Most of what we get in terms of 14's cut scenes outside of anime can be traced back to 7 in that respect. 8 was dog shit, hated the draw system, hated consumable magic, junction system further disincentivized using magic, the seed rank system was retarded, the story was a double nested paradox and just bad. Graphics were nice though... Fucking loved 9, too many people hated it for being "cartoony" and for the "step back" since many peeps only first jumped in on FF around 7/8 at that time and wanted more magitech/7/8 styled games. 9 was also a masterpiece and fitting capstone for the PSX generation of games much like 6 was for the SNES era. Not entirely a fan of some of the design choices for 10 TBH, sphere grid was interesting but ultimately not a fan, the game was also just as linear and as much a hallway as ff13... but at the very least it was disguised by its amazing graphics and story... the voice acting... well it was a first? 11... I played it for 10 years... ironically some of its worst points are what made it fun/good to an extent... couldn't exactly in good faith or retrospect call it a good game per say but I loved it for what it was and the story was ok. 12... in nearly every respect the polar opposite of 10, expansive world, engaging systems... shit story... seriously what were vaan and penelo's point in the story? could cut both, start the story off by following balthier and no net change. 13, dogshit, 100% dogshit, everything about it dogshit. 14 outside of 1.0 shenanigans simply amazing and honestly for now my favorite FF in terms of storyline perspective. 15, MEH - about all I can say, story didn't interest me, did not like the combat system, never got far however, might have to get it on PC and give it a second chance. 16, High expectations considering 14's team Creative Business Unit 3 is on the job (CBU3) I really want it to be amazing, maybe capture some of the 14/9/7/6 magic?

Gunna be honest, I do agree that the results would be different if the poll was a US poll vs JP poll. I've seen differences in JP/US polls in anime and manga before and yeah, they're often different. Considering one of the comments is about how we don't talk, I do think it would be cool if they did what Ys has done in more recent years where the final dialogue choice before the final boss is fully voiced. It would cost some money sure but I have always like those few words that the main character says strictly based on what you choose.

To be fair solo games and mmorpg should be rated differently because ones a full completed package that never receives anything other than dlc and patches while the other receives added content, patches and sometimes items to keep the games lifespan going but since they referred to the franchise as a whole its fair game.

I encountered similar sentiments back when I play FFXI. So many gaming friends would brag about playing every FF since 7 or 6 3 or just all of them. I'd get so excited, thinking I could have more friends to adventure with in Vana'diel (and end my hours of lfg in the Dunes) but pretty much everyone said the same thing when I asked which XI server they played on: "Oh, we didn't mean 11. That's not a real Final Fantasy game."

I don't know a single final fantasy fan who hates 14 though and i know a loooot of FF fans, including myself. Though I don't agree with the FF14 fan narrative that 'wowie its the most FF game ever best story for real!!!11!' because its not. For sure FF9 and FF7 are the strongest narratives in the FF universe for me. FF13 is also a bit of a sleeper hidden gem with its story and infinite cutscenes. Overall very hyped for FF16, really love what Soken and Yoshi-P have done with FF14 and I think having them on board for a true non-MMO classic FF game is very exciting. Always loved the summons in final fantasy too and feel sad that the games don't do them enough justice, so to see an entire story built around the summons, with this cool 'become the summon' demigod style idea, very exciting overall.

I dissed FFXIV too once, somewhat. The interesting part, looking back, is not that I touted the "it's an MMO though, how good can it be?" thing and then changed my mind, no. The real kicker is that I felt like that because that was the easiest rationalization available to me in an online world where people clearly loved something I didn't know. And because I felt I didn't know something about FF that could be as good as the games I did know, I responded negatively to those feelings. Thinking about this also made me realize that my feelings towards FFXI as a kid were much cleaner, since I was curious about this world that was so inaccessible to me. I wondered what this ephemeral FF title was like, online and with people, and so bizarrely differently from what I knew. I remember staring at the cover of FFXI at the store. I think if I had more money as a kid I might have bought it and then just further stare at it at home, never being able to play, always curious. In essence, the internet makes you hyper-charge some feelings and literally veers you away from being honest to yourself. I think some of these people, perhaps many, have similar feelings.

I agree FFXIV is the best FF, but the problem with polls about games that were from generations ago is that older games... well, more and more young people won't have played them, even with the pixel remasters out, and so they'll only pull through if older players really saturate the poll. Final Fantasy I-IV are inherently disadvantaged on the list, while VII, XI, XIV, and XV (recent, still active, and remade) are advantaged. The games that broke the trend are IV, V, and VI. They're old but obviously have much love among older players. Meanwhile, XII and XIII are more recent and... did not pull their weight.

Emet Selch is the best villain in video games, not just Final Fantasy. The music is iconic, rivaling Uematsu's best work. The character writing is fantastic on the whole. It has some blemishes (the beginning is slow, buying the game is weirdly complicated, some systems need a redesign/removal) but there is a massive harvest of wheat for so little chaff.

Bit of devils advocate lengthy comment, but honestly i semi-agree with a few of these comments in some ways. I can never get into stories with avatar leads, and rp-ing a personality into them when the game still tries to already provide a personality into them just doesn't work. same issue with silent protagonists and why i think you can't truly ''project'' yourself onto them because it still boils down to the games narrative and it making you do things or giving linear dialogue options that are actually no choice choices (persona) As for the story itself, people say its all amazing but when you actually talk to the fans theres always only specific parts that they really resonated with, so i don't think its fair to really say the game as a whole has such a legendary story when opinions on when its actually good are so polarizing (the plot not the lore) I myself lost interested after HW, even if shb did have a lot of good moments, but then so did ARR and SB and EW. none of them were good consistently start to finish i think. I do think the story is a bit exaggerated on how good it is, and i believe some of that praise comes from either coming off worse game stories or having played it for so long you have some writing bias. Its definitely ''impressive'' ill call it, being able to keep the plot holes to a minimum and keeping everything relevant start to finish (mostly) for a decade. but impressive doesn't instantly translate to captivating. And at this point idk if i wanna go through another expansion of building our neck muscles nodding in agreement to everyone with the scions. purely talking the MAIN plot, not side content. So with all that naturally i wouldn't even have Emet on my list of best characters, but lists like that are literally just popularity contests that don't actually matter end of the day, Ive learned theres tons of 14 players who have never touched another FF and probably don't even know anyone else on the list. Thats just how it be,

I started with 8, then played 9, then 10, 10-2, 7 (which I gave up on the first time after leaving midguard), went back to 9, tried 12, played 9 a third time, played 6 and 4, gave 7 a second chance (was able to get to the end of the 2nd disc before giving up), played 9 and 10 again, then gave the franchise a break. Tried 14 (wasn't a fan), then after years, played through a bit of 15, and then FINALLY gave 14 a legit shot and fell in love with it thanks to 2021 giving me nothing to do XD. So now, I play the crap out of this game and am enjoying it.

FFXI has tanked close to 20 years of the same kind of dismissive-ness despite Sakaguchi and Tanaka having to push back against Square management and insisting it get the numbered title during development which is what paved the way for XIV to be considered a mainline game worthy of the investment for ARR'ifying 1.0 so XIV is at the very least in good company.
@jrtime228

Sakaguchi was retired from squarenix in 2003 and has been running his own game company since then. He couldn't have pushed back for this game in particular because he wasn't involved in its development (as far as i have found).
@zypherwolfe88
@zypherwolfe88 Жыл бұрын
@@jrtime228 The info I spoke about was shared in the recent We are Vanade'el interviews with some of the Developers who were there from the start of XI's development for XI's 20th anniversary. All the interviews can be found on the We are Vanad'iel website so it looks pretty open and shut to me. Given that this is SE on thre record about the development of XI. It's not outside the realm of possibility that he was heavily involved in its pre-production, Sakaguchi got addicted to Everquest and that was the impetus for Square to make their first MMO, one focusing on encouraging cross cultural exchange and cooperation which is why Memoro de la Stono was written by Uematsu in Esperanto. And he was apparently involved with the production enough to side with Tanaka against management about the numbering hence the compromise that still shows up in XIV's branding to this day: Final Fantasy XI Online and Final Fantasy XIV Online. Even XVI's Director who cut his teeth on the Mana series (XI was made up of Chrono Cross and Mana Devs as well from various other projects) was working on XI and he added in FFXI's Skillchain system to push more cooperation and synchronization from all the different supported Regions (NA/EU/JP) whose player-bases all shared the same servers. Which is also what lead them to implement and maintain cross platform play between PS2 Xbox 360 and PC; with only the PC version remaining due to the closure of the overseas console versions when the final paid expansion Seekers of Adoulin released (PS2 support was kept for the JP region and Adoulin was also the very last PS2 disc to be printed for the system, efore SE ultimately closed the PS2 version in JP a few years after Adoulin. In fact they're using the last remaining PS2 Dev kits to still produce content for it to this daybut they won't last forever which is why Yoshida has been trying to get the game running on the cloud. So yea I do think Sakaguchi had much involvement with XI, especially given the interviews and their sources on the We Are Vanadiel website, and to say nothing of how heavily skewed it's content was to cooperating with other players even if they didn't speak your same language, hence they invented the Auto Translation system to facilitate that. Even Yoshida called out Masato Kato (I think that's his name?, the writer for Chrono Cross) who wrote the base game and first expansion storylines , as his, (Yoshida's) inspiration for making XIV story focused, b/c of the success XI had in doing so and thus defined what a FF MMO should look like in terms of priorities and structure. Edit: In closing, I would humbly recommend anyone who is interested in XI's Dev to check out the We Are Vanadiel website as it has not only interviews with original Devs (even those who have left SE) as well as a really cool intereactive timeline of the game's milestones as well as behind the scenes milestones that the Devs shared (like how they had to emergency nerf stuff or otherwise giving a window to what they were contending with while developing the game. There's even a interview where Yoshida shares how he first met Tanaka and what possessed him to ARR'ify XIV 1.0.

14 being ranked as #1 for most popular game is a given, simply due to timing. It'd definitely solidify its spot in top 5 for an indefinite period of time (probably until the next 2+ critically acclaimed FF games get released). For that same reason, Emet being #1 for popular character makes sense as well. Who will stand the test of time though? It'd likely be Tifa. Remember that this is a JP poll, people. They're drawn to ridiculous levels of fanboying, even more than the west (but only barely). This also explains the Wakka bit. Had this been in the early 2000s and for western audiences, Sephiroth and Legolas (from LotR) would have probably been the top two FF characters... and one obviously doesn't belong!

And meanwhile I'm over here on the other side of the fence, with FF14 being the first Final Fantasy game I've seriously played because the other games had boring menu RPG mechanics and/or infuriating random encounters.

I love FFXIV, but I can understand, that it is difficult to compare an MMO with ongoing service and progression over many years to singleplayer games. And so far i love the story of FFXIV so I hate it, that the WoL have no dialog lines
