I'd guess that nearly all firearms holders would never seek any help for mental issues. I'm sure your certificates would be revoked immediately for getting yourself the correct help.

I applied for mine in mid 2017, granted early 2018. My surgery didn't charge for the service but they did want me to come in and talk to them about it since my GP didn't know me very well. Seemed fair enough and they were very quick with it.

I self harmed briefly in 2010 and received a diagnosis of mild depression in 2018... am now planning to apply for an SGC having tried clay pigeon shooting... so this is bloody useful... many thanks!

I had to do this on my last renewal 18 months ago. My GP told me 3-6 weeks (ended up being 4), but the police only give you a 21 day window to get it to them after the application, so you end up playing a game of hedging your bets by not sending off your license too soon (or the force bin you GP letter) and not too late (so the force doesn’t bin your application after the 21 day window expires). Then once you send it off you have to keep chasing both of them otherwise you are basically relying on two civil servants working as a team which ain’t going to happen. In the end I discovered my ‘letter’ was done my some low level admin pleb who didn’t even bother to sign it, luckily I had insisted they send an email copy and I was able to argue with my force that the email address was proof enough that it had come from the GP, otherwise I would have had to go through the whole thing again. It’s probably much worse now due to Covid so assume absolute incompetence and chase it constantly - best of luck!!

Whole thing is a load of bs. I have a panic disorder and Health anxiety, and may have to give up shooting.

Used shotgun medicals myself gained my medical records, took a week to get them sent them too shotgun medicals had my certificate within that same week, carnt recommend them enough.

I didn’t need a doctors letter got mine in March I’m in Wiltshire probably one of the best counties

I'm not sure if it's different in terms of firearms and shotgun certs, but I just had to complete a GP form for my air weapon cert application in Scotland and the Police Scotland covering letter specifically said that the GP does not have the final call on determining medical fitness , only the Chief Constable. The GP is just providing information and the police will ultimately decide.

The anti gun sentiment in the NHS and biased views of medical professionals interpreting records is going to be a major issue in getting an application through. GPs in the main are not qualified in mental health issues and legally may not even be able to complete. Forcing applicants to fill out these forms could also lead to direct descrimination and potentially be unlawful under the equality act 2010.

I’m new to applying, is it best to start the medical first before doing the form for a certificate?

I have my license but not heard of this or recived a letter about it . do I have to take action now ? Or just when i have to renew it?

Out of the entire application process the medical form was the only bit I had an issue with. My doctor initially sent my form back saying I had anxiety and depression when I've never suffered from either... I'm lucky that the FEO who spoke to me was understanding when I explained this was incorrect. I ended up going in to the doctors and getting an appointment with him to discuss this. I had to get him to complete another form and complete a cover letter saying he was mistaken the first time. Whilst speaking to him he was very anti-gun. The NHS are rife with anti-gun sentiment.

Good review but on the Hampshire medical information form, it does NOT ask for the GP’s opinion of whether you are fit to hold a FAC.

By filling these things in they are profiling you did mine last year didn't need one they need to give a reason why you can't have one it is not a necessary condition

For renewals in my experience, GP's are not processing this medical proforma citing covid, also they are refusing information requests so that you cannot pass on your medical records to a third party to complete this process, even when its the firearm owners legal obligation to have this form when submitting a renewal and the GP knows that I/you are liable to prosecution, financial loss, or the stress of finding someone or somewhere to store your firearms whilst trying to sort your application out. It has taken me months to get my license renewed and a huge amount of stress, which in my opinion is unwarranted. If we as firearm owners have an obligation to abide by the law then the legal and professional bodies should also make every effort to expedite this process due to the gravity and consequences for us of not complying with these laws. My local firearms unit was very helpful throughout this stressful time but they are policing this legislation not making it! My advice is to be as polite as possible and to not give up..

Leicestershire contact your GP i never had to sort it.

Also people if you have a pattern of police call out but you have not been charged or arrested you will be refused, thats including domestic violence, or any police criminal investigations. You will be refused if there is a pattern.

I already have access to Patient Access and have already asked my GP to fill in the form (within 28 days). I might wait and see what happens.

Doctors probably don’t want you going into the practice, I was asked to email my Id, hopefully they reply but not holding my breath.

I heard a rumour that Hampshire licencing were asking FAC holders to provide a shot cartridge case for each of their firearms - seems a bit much - any idea if that is true?

You do know that this is not actually law and people acquiescing to these demands will ensure that it will become law. For me, thumbs down for this video.
