Watch as I eat various fruits and vegetables at the South Pole for the first time in eight months! On the day of filming this video, we got our first plane since the station closed for winter, and with them, they brought along a big box of freshies, or fresh produce. Among those things included apples, oranges, tomatoes, carrots, and most importantly, avocados. Check out when I taste them for the first time in so long!

I am currently living and working at the South Pole Station through the United States Antarctic Program. I am not down here as a filmmaker or photographer, but instead work in the Logistics and Supply department. All of these videos are being made during my free time and not during working hours. We are very busy down here keeping the station running at maximum efficiency, but I have managed to find some free time to make these short movies!

Hey man, just wanted to say i only discovered your channel a few days ago and have been binge watching them as i only became more interested in your travels in Antarctica. My question is, what did you have to do to become a 'fuelie' or a supply technician? Has your opinion of the job changed as you adapted to the lifestyle? Lastly are you compensated well for the job you do and the isolated lifestyle you have to take on. Your attitude and demeanor make it appear like it an awesome place to potentially work and live.

Ya know, fresh carrots, onions and potatoes can keep in a sand box for about a year. Kinda wonder why that wasn't looked into

On my first trip down to pole, for my leg from CHC to MacTown I was on a Kiwi Herc with two pallets and 2 sets of 4 rows of jump-seats. (Jump seats so close that one row's knees were interlaced with the opposing row.) Very tight quarters. Once we reached cruising altitude we were told that we were allowed to get up from our seats and could stretch out anywhere in the cabin of the plane as long as: 1. we didn't get in the way of the air crew (or moved as soon as they asked us to), and 2. did not sit or lie down on one the the pallets because that's where the freshies were. (Well, they didn't say we couldn't climb on that pallet, but we would have to endure the wrath of everyone already on the continent who were waiting for those freshies.) Turns out it was a really long flight, we boomeranged after the point that they normally consider boomeranging... We could have made it back to CHC, but wouldn't have had enough fuel reserves to meet flight regulations so we had to make a quick refueling stop in Dunedin on the way back north... A long day to go nowhere... I think they pushed it because the flights were already about a week behind because of equipment failures on the planes. (Though I wasn't complaining that much for having about a week to play tourist in Canterbury, NZ. And, because they were waiting on parts to be delivered, I didn't have to report every morning.) Though it probably wasn't as bad as the MacTown to Pole flight that circled the pole for a couple hours before heading back to MCM. I remember hearing the plane circle while I was outside doing my IceTop installations, but the ice mist and ceiling was so low that they couldn't make a visual approach. That flight not only had PAX who traveled all day for nothing, but some needed medication for someone in Club Med. I think that was why they tried waiting for the weather conditions to clear up for a landing.

I am a live in home care provider for my mom. After my mom has gone “home” my wishes are to live/stay at the South Pole. My life goal is to live/stay at the research facility as long as possible. E.G. 2021 to 2061 with out ever leaving. I’m currently 36 years old and most people in my family live to be in there 70’s. I’m good with Physics and I’m great with any kind of handyman work that needs to be done... I’m definitely a good gopher, I can help with what ever needs to be done. Either way it would be a great study to just see how it all goes “physical and mental“... that’s for sure.

Woah, that definitely would be really cool and interesting! I have no clue how you would really go about doing that, because as of now, the NSF has a rule that without special permission, you aren’t allowed to stay in Antarctica for over 14 months without taking a 42 day (6 week) break. So yeah, what you’re talking about has never been done, so it would definitely be unique!!

I'm a little lost. Is this an older video? I thought you were leaving the south pole station in November. Its my understanding that at this time of year, with the south pole covered in perpetual daylight, that its pretty busy and crowded with lots of researchers and scientists. Also, if you are gone. Are you ever going to go back to the south pole station. Just wondering.

Hey! You’re totally right! This video is way old at this point! Honestly I’ve just been behind in posting! I’ve got one South Pole video left (the one where I as actually leave the station) and then it’s time for some more recent content! Sorry for the confusion!! As far as going back, I don’t know if I’ll go back to the Pole again, but I do think that it’s very likely that I’ll go back to McMurdo!

Hi Viktor 👋. I’m still in high school, but working in Antarctica is a dream for me. I have a few questions. First of all, chemistry is my favorite topic, and I would like to major in chemical engineering. Is there any job at Amundsen-Scott that I could apply for with that major and if not Amundsen, McMurdo? Is there was a job, would I be able to work over the winter? And could I join the work force before getting any experience? Thank you!
@GoneVenturing

Hey!! So happy to hear you are interested! Thanks for reaching out!! First of all, you need to decide if you want to come down working as a scientist or as a contractor doing all the other stuff. I also studied biochemistry in college, but I work here as a contractor. So unfortunately, at the Pole there isn’t too much going on (at least right now) within chemistry. However there aren’t jobs like that at McMurdo! However, you could always consider not working as a scientist, which has its perks too! Enjoy what you’re doing now and definitely look into working down here in a few years!! ☺️☺️
@thirstywater1115

Thank you for the reply! Did you mean to say that there are jobs at McMurdo within chemistry? Im saying this because I thought I remember seeing a chemistry research lab on base. If there is, would I be able to spend a summer at McMurdo as a scientist, then a winter as a contractor at the Pole? Sorry to bother again, I’m just quite interested.
