Contact Tim Shanks, if you are looking to get the arm stabilizer, I showed in this video.

Side note: I was told the clamp arm rotates on it's own, and does not need to be removed, to flip the knife over. However, I was never able to get the arm to adjust for me. Another reason, reading the instructions before hand, is probably a good idea.
I didn't go through every step of set up in this video, as there are tons online, that do a far better job, than I. This was just a first look, to see how the device performed, and to be honest, I am impressed. Not everyone is as enthusiastic about guided systems, however, I think they have a place. Especially for those, who just can not get the time, to learn, how to freehand sharpen. I will say, all these devices, have a learning curve. The basics still matter. Developing a burr, minimizing, and final removal etc. Once you get that down, they are all pretty simple to understand, and use.
Would I recommend this device? Absolutely, as long as, the arm stabilizer, is purchased. Without it, I am afraid the device has too much play, for my liking. Work Sharp needs to address this failure, and design a work around for it. Something as simple, as what Tim is selling, included in the box, would make a world of difference.
Work Sharp did not send me this device to test. A friend at work purchased it, and asked for my opinion. This video was made for that purpose.

There are better options around. Just not at the same price point 😁. Taking price into account, I wouldn’t disagree with that.

Gritomatic has many upgrades and accessories for this sharpener. It does look pretty good for the money. There is no excuse for knife owners to have dull edges. Thank you Jeff.

I learned years ago that instead of spending your money on something inferior, invest it towards something better from the get-go. At least start with a KME and go from there. Or better yet invest in some nice stones. Speaking of nice stones Olga from Gritomatic just emailed me and said the Griomatic Silicon Carbide 240, 1K, and the 2.5K are back in stock. I ordered all three. Thanks Jeff! Thumbs up because I always enjoy Jeff's videos.

It is, imo, a must have. Without it, I would not recommend this sharpening set up, even at it's price point. I would encourage anyone to save their money, and buy something that is designed better. Like the Hapstone, or EPA. Hindsight, I should have drove that point home, a little harder.

Jef it seems like a good little sharpening system for the money. The problem I have with sharpening systems is how long it takes me to get it all setup. That’s why I stay with freehand it’s just quicker and more convenient for me. You produced a really nice edge though. Thanks for sharing brother 👊

Freehand is better in all scenarios, but not everyone can, or will, invest the time. At least these systems give them options.

It seems like there are a lot of good ideas in the design. The magnets and the positioning of the stone arm. I think it's easier to add rigidity to this than it would be to add precision to a lansky. Though, how important that precision is would be up to the user.
@Jef
@Jef 2 жыл бұрын
I used a lansky before and had the same complaints. The stone size is a pia for me. If i recall, i was able to hold the lansky in hand, while sharpening. That gave it better stability. This one, a simple clamp mounting it, maybe, the easiest option. Being plastic, you just gotta be careful to not break it. For the price, it’s not a bad system, but it could be better, with a few touches added
@dfailsthemost
@dfailsthemost 2 жыл бұрын
@@Jef Yeah, I had a Smiths version of the system that I've only used a few times before getting into freehand. I like having it around, however. In case I feel like I want to be extra careful with a particular knife some time in the future.

Ayyyy coooool! Who doesn't love a good fixed angle sharpener, and the revolving stones are an awesome development! I only wish they would have put the same amount of thought into a mechanism that flips the knife over from one side to the next. I'm curious though, with your skillset, does using a device like this feel more like a chore than a fun/therapeutic activity?
@Jef
@Jef 2 жыл бұрын
I don’t get meditative using these devices, like i do when i freehand, if that is what you mean
@stroppystuff641
@stroppystuff641 2 жыл бұрын
In some ways I think this is a better out of the box kit than the KME, they at least provide you with some orings to use as a stopper on the edge leading pass. Not that it's hard to add those to the KME but it's stupid that they don't get provided by default. Although I hate jig systems I think you're right and this is totally viable for those either on a budget or not wanting to go deep into the freehand world.
@Jef
@Jef 2 жыл бұрын
I’ve never used the kme. I wasn’t aware they didn’t have some stop system for the stones. That’s a big downer. I smacked the hell out of them as i sped through this and they had no movement when I was done. Yet another example of something simple that should be added, to complete a system. That is one of my favorite things about Hapstone. When issues are made clear, they revise and improve, releasing better versions.

@@Jef Mine didn't come with them but I added some of my own. It's possible they've changed it now but I only got the kit last year so unlikely. I agree with them being super useful, I end up hitting it all the time by mistake

Hey Jef, I'm going to ask you something not related to the video at all. When I sharpen my knives freehand on a stone, I manage to get a good edge all the way from the handle to the tip, but the tip itself always get a bit rounded up and it looses that needle like point I love. That means I have to reprofile the knife again to get that point. Do you have any idea if there's something I should pay attention to while sharpening near the tip that I'm missing?
@Jef
@Jef 2 жыл бұрын
A few videos back i made a point of explaining how i sharpen at the tip. I leave my finger half on/half off, so when i pull it across the stone, i can feel when i am hitting that area. Seems to work for me. That is what i would suggest trying.
@pinarppanrapir9489
@pinarppanrapir9489 2 жыл бұрын
@@Jef And stop right there, without dragging the tip too much right?
@Jef
@Jef 2 жыл бұрын
Yes. Just don’t go over that spot. Hit it. Just dont go over it. Also dont concentrate too much in that area alone. Sometimes you gotta spend extra time on it, but monitor the shape and size so you don’t remove more than you mean to

It's kind of flimsy looking. Simple but well thought out. Looks like it would be a good sharpener. If I didnt already have a expensive sharpener I would give it a try. I think thats the first one those type of sharpeners thats would work with a double edge blade or one with a swedge and no flat to clamp down on.
@Jef
@Jef 2 жыл бұрын
Yea it is a bit flimsy. Based on the price, that is what you should expect. I wouldn't give up my Hapstone, over this. I meant to try it with a flat ground knife, but I've already boxed it back up, ready to go back to it's owner. In time, I will ask him how it works on those, and see what he says. It's such a simple thing, to design into clamping systems. I don't understand why it isn't done. Just add a screw, like the Hapstone T1, and the problem is solved ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@waltv6385
@waltv6385 2 жыл бұрын
It works fine on full flat ground blades. There’s another stabilizer brace on the market for under $4 that does the same thing…but it’s not adjustable. To give a fair review, IMO, you should have at least read the instructions and use the full sets of stones. Someone with your experience should never failed to get a burr over the entire edge before moving to finer grits. Even so, a 112 average Bess isn’t bad for the half assed effort you gave it.
