You need to see Aretha Franklin live at the Grammys singing her version of *Nessun Dorma* a famous classic opera by Puccini. Aretha loved opera music! She was able to fill in for Luciano Pavarotti at the Grammy Awards minutes before she had to go on stage, unrehearsed, and in a different key than she typically sings. It is considered by many to be one of the greatest televised live music moments in history. I was a very young when this happened and I can remember it as if it were just yesterday. She set me on a path to appreciate and love classical and opera music.

This song was written by Otis Redding for himself. He didn’t have the hit. Aretha took it and made it an anthem for women everywhere!

This song was a big part if our civil rights movement. I didn't realize at the time I was in the 7th grade and my first concert was Ms Franklin concert on my birthday it was and still is the best concert. Every one was so hyped up! James Brown concerts was off the hook too!

FINALLY!! I have waited for this! She is the UNDISPUTED QUEEN OF SOUL. Also take a listen to "Think", Chain of Fools", "Knew you were waiting" Freeway of Love". In 1998, Aretha was at the Oscars to do a "bit" for Blues Brothers 2 movie (she is in both) and Pavoratti was supposed to perform but fell ill 45 minutes before showtime. The producer runs up three flights of stairs and says "Miss Aretha, Pavarotti just cancelled and I have a full orchestra, a choir and 5 minutes to fill. Can you sing his song". She was quoted to say "ya, I think I can do that". And sang Puccini's Nessun Dorma. Please find this on video and watch the audience reaction. And the only person to perform at 3 presidential inaugurations. So there's that

Aretha sang at Pres Obama's inauguration in 2009. I saw a TV special about her years ago. For some reason the organisers wanted her to mine. She said she could not and would not and just one reason was she never sings the songs the same! Classy lady.

Oh guys! I was 4 years old when this was on the radio! I loved Aretha. Imagine a 4 year old white girl dancing and singing with one of her favorite singers. I so clearly remember fearing the Klan was going to come and hang my beloved pet and only friend, then burn a cross in our yard. You see, the news came on right after Mr. Rogers. I would go missing frequently, looking for his neighborhood, certain that the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was his neighbor!

I was 11. My dad was transferred from his job in Brighton Michigan and the cultural shock in moving to Little Rock Arkansas has always haunted me. I watched cross’s burning and witnessed the horrible hate for Black people. These atrocities on the nightly news and in my classroom. Aretha justified my image understanding of the human condition at such an early stage. I bought this album and wore it out. Still listen to The Queen of Soul. Rest In Peace, sweet Soul Sister 🌞

I recall hearing this song as my sister, mom and I were cleaning on Saturday's. (Our dad may or may not of shown up - that was back in the 60s - doesn't matter any) . It was a good song and it made our mom happy.

As an 18 year old in Detroit in 1968 we had tons of this coming out of Motown along with all the new innovative rock music going down just after the British music invasion...man it was a special time we didn't even realize it , we were soooo spoiled...lol.
