I read that the record company wanted Whitney to record this but they refused because they wanted to record it and have a hit that they were singing lead on. This was so much like one of Whitney’s pop hits of that era it would have rocketed to #1 ❤❤❤ I was in my 20s in the 80s and loved this song.

So happy, yet shocked, when I saw what you were gonna react to. I absolutely love this song! Amber, you got it right when you said the word "jammin." I used to jam to this song back in the day. Oh and happy you mentioned "Boy Meets World." I own the complete dvd series. Everyone needs a Feeny in their life. Ok, now react to Kenny Rogers, The Greatest." As parents, you will especially love the song and who better to tell the story than Kenny? He's the best story teller.

This came out in summer of 88 and then became a very played hit in my Senior year of college. Despite being a Whitesnake, AC/DC (well you get the picture) fan, this song was a secret love. I could never turn it off if it came on the radio. Still reminds me of my own star I kept waiting to fall, but it never came to be. We are friends to this day and she has been to both my weddings.

So, these two wrote "How Will I Know" for Whitney Houston's first album. When asked to write a song for her second, the first one they turned in was "Waiting for a Star to Fall." It wasn't quite what Whitney and her team were looking for. Their next submission was "I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me)." So Whitney got a huge hit, George and Shannon got a huge hit, and the right decisions were made all around. But I do like to imagine this song in Whitney Houston's voice. That would have been incredible too.

When falling in love was fun - young, energetic, pure joy even when apart from each other...I think psychologists call this limerence. When a look or an innocent brush of a hand sends goosebumps and the impulse to embrace is all but impossible to resist. This is how this song sounds to me. Anyone who have fallen in love should know what I'm talking about

Did you watch the reaction video throughout? Today most music listening is skip to the best part, listen, then skip to the next track. In the 80's, most songs were heard on the radio or MTV, and songs had to be heard from beginning to end - this informed the mid-tempo growing to a faster upbeat crescendo of pop music, that is like a musical sibling to the power ballads of the time. Jay seemed to really enjoy the song once it got past the bridge. He says the second part of the song saves it for him.

The way Amber reacted is what my heart does every time I listen to this song. It's a sweet pure modern rapturous love song. I thought for sure Jay would get into it at least for the fact that the love and devotion described in the song is what I see from him and Amber!!!! It's also pure late 80s pop though it was unlike anything else current at the time - was a big hit & the video was in constant rotation because it was visually beautiful and illustrated the vibe perfectly. It came out 35 years ago this past June & affects me the same way today as it did the first time I heard it. (ps- I've written responses to several of the videos on this awesome channel & in just about every one, I think I've called Jay "Rob"...because I'm a moron. Sorry Jay!)

husband and wife team, daughter is the little girl in the video. The husband wrote for other artists, including Whitney Houston. He wrote this song after seeing Houston performing live at Yhe Greek Theater and he saw a shooting star in the sky above her. The song was offered to Whitney Houston, whose producer turned it down. I would have loved to hear her take on it. It was shopped around to a few others, including Belinda Carlisle, who did a studio trial to see if the song was one she wanted. She turned down the song, but her studio sample is available as an outtake release on youtube. But this song was a passion project for George Merrill, and his wife Rubicam. One might notice that they do not have the traditional glamour look of pop performers of the time. The writer and his wife and some studio musicians formed Boy Meets Girl to showcase their songs offered to other artists and cut an album a couple of years before. Waiting for a Star to Fall was the inspiration behind their second album. They knew the song would be a hit if it could just be recorded by the right artists. After no-one accepted the song, Boy Meets Girl released it themselves. The song is featured over the closing credits of Three Men and a Little Lady. I did not see it. It's not my type of flick. Yeah, the song starts out as just another bouncy pop tune until the vocals comes alive after the bridge.

I was born in 82. I remember hearing this when I was around 7 or 8 years old. Loved it then. Love it even more. What a song. Absolutely perfection. These 2 wrote 2 HUGE hits for Whitney Houston as well. Genius x

After all the RSR videos I've watched, this is the first one that you haven't been enthusiastic about. I love your positivity and the "if you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all" philosophy, but it's kind of refreshing to know that you can be honest about disliking a song, especially when it's done kindly. 🙂

Amber has it right! A great song. While they are perhaps best known for their hit song "Waiting for a Star to Fall" from 1988 they are really known for writing two of Whitney Houston's number one hits: "How Will I Know" and "I Wanna Dance with Somebody (Who Loves Me)".

I love this sweet song! The couple was actually married at the time they wrote this, but have since divorced. It was also used in Three Men and a Little Lady (a hint for the movie channel maybe…?)

How funny, I just realized I'd never seen the video for this song before either. Strikes me as mildly crazy given how all over the place it was when new. My exposure must have been radio heavy because this was back when MTV still played music and I dabbled there a fair bit. Anyway, great reaction RSR, thank yous as always!

I was initially disappointed to see Jay wasn't feeling this one, but knowing what was coming up later in the track I knew there was a chance he may change his mind. Watching his facial expression and vibe totally changing as that epic saxaphone kicked in was great to see. 😊❤

Great soft pop song and great story behind it. The chorus is a HOOK and the sax nicely grounds those soaring, sparkling vocals. it'll be stuck in my head and I'll be trying to hit those notes for a couple days now.
