I have to tell you my story , one of my favorites. My oldest sister and I were eating breakfast at a waffle house in Memphis on Brooks Rd. About 1 ml. From Graceland in the 70's. We were Alone and in walks a group of black guys. Eventually we look up, my sister Says" isn't that Lionel Richey" And I said "Yeah , and that is Smokey Robinson! " We all laughed. Lionel pointed and said "The Commadores" we like to fell out. I Said "Detroit in the house!!" We all started laughing. We told them how we were born in Detroit too, and loved Motown. My sister is crazy, and said I can't believe we are eating breakfast with you guys, if you don't mind I am telling everybody that. Lionel said what do you have on your plate, she said, a piece of bacon. He said well, I have a piece of toast. Let's trade, and you won't be lying. Lol. We talked to all of them for about an Hour, we laughed. They were so sweet and down to earth. I have always loved me some Smokey. He is so smooth. Later that night we and some friends went to Mud Island in the middle of MS River and sat on blankets in the grass next to the outdoor stage. We had the best seats in the house. Great time. Only in Memphis. Have danced to the song many times . Love these guys. Peace .

“Brick House” is short for “brick shit house”. That’s why there’s a pause (musically called a ‘rest’) between brick and house. In the days before indoor plumbing, the toilet was outside in the outhouse. Most outhouses were made of flimsy wood. But a brick outhouse was solid and warmer. So the old heads would say that a thick, curvy woman was built like a brick shithouse. This song was hot at all the house parties and clubs. One of those songs everybody wanted to dance to. In my neighborhood (Santa Monica, CA) we had a little chant during the rests in the music. It went like this: She’s a brick (Say what?) House (Say what, say what? Alright) She’s mighty mighty, just letting’ it all hang out. Man those were the days. You fellas should checkout the Ohio Players, especially: ‘Rollercoaster’ ‘Skin Tight’ ‘Sweet Sticky Thing’, and ‘Fire’ which was #1 on the R&B chart for a whole year Plus, you gotta Google their album covers, if you want to know something about being a teen in the 1970’s.

This comes from the expression "She's built like a brick sh**house", which is a compliment to a woman's physique. It means she has a good build. That's why the long pause between 'brick' and 'house'. They are implying the missing word without saying it.

My best friend turned me on to this song in 1976. As we used to say "this is the jam". I loved this song and I played it cleaning the house, the car, at school, and whenever it came on the radio. Lionel Richie got started with the Commodores but the whole group was an icon and they still are. Look up a group called Con Funk Shun from the 1970's and you will be pleasantly surprised. I think they were awesome.
