Practice on some cardboard first / its like a mini HVLP and you still need to dial it in a little bit -and- clean it right away when you are done!

I've used the Sears Model 364-15506 airbrush for over 40 years. You can mix just as much paint as you need. If you use a traditional spray gun or even an aerosol can, you have a large spray pattern of like 6-8 inches for a tiny 1/4 chip. With an airbrush, you have precision control and can actually get to the point, with a little practice, where you can perfectly fill in a tiny scratch with no masking and little to no overspray. With acrylic lacquer, the paint goes on very thin (with a 50/50 paint to thinner ratio) so you have to hit it several times. But with the airbrush, putting down multiple thin coats is very easy and clean to do. Just like in the video, it's important to get an airbrush that has variable paint output. Kind of like a variable speed drill. With the adjustable airbrush, you pull the trigger back to increase the flow of paint. A lady I know is so precise, she can airbrush intricate designs on ladies' fingernails. It's good to practice with water-based paints on scrap material first. Before you know it, you'll be an old pro!

Yes! I wanted to fix a scratch on my gf car and looked up how to do it. The results were okay, and I figured the issue was the use of a spray bottle, so I was thinking use a spray gun, but those require more scfm (basically how much air pressure your compressor can produce), about to give up then I learned about different size sprayers, that got me to airbrush which my compressor can do. It was just an idea which I wasn't sure about until I saw this! Thanks you, will pull the trigger on getting the items, but it would have been nice to have seen you use a primer and clear coat, but I'm sure it's the same idea about thinning the things first for the airbrush.

If you have larger panels that need to be done, look into LVLP guns, some of them only require 3-4 CFM which the smaller 30-gallon compressors can handle. I have a 29-gallon from harbor freight and it feeds my Grizzly LVLP (H7666 is model I have, but I think they discontinued it in favor of the H7667) just fine, as well as my Devilbiss FLG-5. If you are on a real tight budget and only need a 1-off, several paint shops will mix and put it in a rattle can for you.

I use the same thing to do small touch up on aircraft. I hooked mine up to a scuba tank so it’s always perfectly clean and dry air. Also make sure you never use syringes with the black rubber stopper. They will cause fisheyes. Ask me how I know!

Hi again....you fixed that well my friend ........wouldn't happened with a hood scoop.....time to fit one
@skipragsdale35652 жыл бұрын
Looks like it worked. Probably wouldn't have used straight cut on the newspaper masking (hard edge). If you randomly tear the paper larger than your repair area being sprayed, then don't spray with the airbrush out as far as the paper it will naturally feather itself out. - Why didn't you lightly grind; clearance, then blend the underside of the hood before doing the touch up? (So, it doesn't happen again.) BTW - Those Harbor Freight DeLuxe Airbrushes are a great little starter airbrush, use it until you decide you like using an AB then upgrade to a Paasche or Iwata dual action AB. They're a great back up AB too.

The video where you show the paint after multiple coats still shows a very noticeable depth difference from the damage. The finished part of your video does not look like it's an issue. how did you fix or level the surface? Was it clear coat? I have some dog scratches to fill in and I think an airbrush could be my best choice but want to get it right the first time.

Honestly i do not remember what i used in this touch up - i always test spray though and adjust the regulator until the pattern looks ok (ie not runny, but not dry/orange peely) - Wasn't more than 30PSI for sure though / the brush i used i got at harbor freight and i suspect i followed the recommended pressure range- i'll see what i can dig up and thanks for the comment!

I’m looking to do this for my weekend project on a scratch on my car. Quick question - what’s the reason for apply a dilute of 50/50 ratio for the thinner with the paint? Thank you!
@TacoJoe4 жыл бұрын
50/50 was what the paint manufacturer recommended - I think with lacquer, that is the typical starting point too. If you are using lacquer, remember there are usually (3) different thinner types and they match the temp you spray at - if its cold the thinner in more volatile and warm, less - thanks for the comment

can you tell us which compressor you got please? So you bought the regulator separately and installed it your self?Urgently need to know as about to do this myself. Thanks.

For the full paint job and airbrushing too, I used the 29 gallon Harbor Freight compressor and added a moisture separtor about 25 ft away (allows the air to cool) - I used the harbor freight purple gun too to spray and of course the harbor freight air brush too. The regulator is the generic harbor freight gauge that I adapted with some vinyl hose form Menards. Check out my other video on the full paint job and I think this will help you (link below). try touching up 3 stage paint right in the middle of a large area with an airbrush, then get back to me I’ve realized it requires a totally different base metallic color to be used over what you would use if you were to paint an entire hood or fender spreading out the base
@TacoJoe3 жыл бұрын
Yes - urethane paint w/metallic would be tough - those paints are great/super durable, but can make bodywork more challenging - I spray lacquer in this video / thanks for the comment!

I just finished doing mine. My paint isnt a single stage, though, and the areas I hit are easily visible in certain lighting. Not sure if I can spray the 2k clear or just buff and polish and hope for the best. Any assistance would be appreciated.
@TacoJoe3 жыл бұрын
I'd consider wet sanding / buffing a few inconspicuous places and see how it looks (underside of trunk / rockers if they wrap around / etc.) - you never know. My paint is quite a bit different than single stage unfortunately so I'm not sure I'll be a lot of help - I used lacquer which is very user friendly but not very durable with road chips / UV / etc - I also had to respray a few times to get it right / check some of the different painter forums for advice too (Meguiars / Eastwood / etc.) -

Nice video, not too much talking and sped up when needed. you did this with lacquer paint, will in work with other types of paint?

different kinds of paint can be touched up in a similar way, but it might be harder to blend (especially if there is a clear coat) - good luck!

Nice job. What is your solution for the clearance issue? Maybe drop mount?
@TacoJoe5 жыл бұрын
I have a plan / going to turn a new wingnut with a bumper incorporated because the hood flexes up to 1” or so with the big bumps (eg. I think some contact is a reality). If this doesn’t work well then yes - drop mount. Thanks for the comment!

The simplicity of single stage paint... much easier to work than bc/cc
@beautgrainger147 Жыл бұрын
Not exactly.. on my elderly Merc with single stage, 30 years after production, and with some previous repairs, faded, then polished back to nice, a colour match isn't likely to be exact.. My grandad chose red single stage, specifically to avoid the problems with metallic 2 stage repairs of the time. Nowadays they don't make the same single stage type of paint and an upcoming repair will probably need to be blended.
@Kyle_Nelson11 ай бұрын
@@beautgrainger147 it is difficult to color match any paint. My wife's 2 year old garage kept car with factory color code had a professional blend and the color is off.

So do you need to apply thinner with any type of automotive paint ?
@TacoJoe3 жыл бұрын
Depends on the paint / check into what your paint type requires/allows. Before you spray your car, test it out too. Airbrushes are usually pretty easy to clean up so its easy to mess around with thinning/setup until you have it right. Worst case, you sand it down and start over - good luck and thanks for the comment!
@haremoali294710 ай бұрын
How the paint can be sanding?my question is the painting can sanding or not?
@TacoJoe10 ай бұрын
depends on the paint, but with lacquer, you basically want to wet sand and polish after it has time to harden. Thanks for the comment!

Why can’t I find a detailer or bodyshop that handles touch up paint this way? They always want you to repaint the whole panel, or they only touch it in a way where it’s not flush with the paint? Very frustrating.
@conwaysdetailing387 Жыл бұрын
They want to charge the full price. Most places want insurance replacement style jobs.

Did you use any primer first ?
@TacoJoe3 жыл бұрын
For the touch up no, but base coat- yes / i used polyesther based primer (Featherfill G2) - stuff works really good/sands nice. Airbrush though, most of the time you are safe on small touch up areas with paint only (no primer) / there are probably some guidelines out there though when you should add primer to the mix so maybe ask around / thanks for the comment
