Our 2004 Mazdaspeed Miata made a wailing sound, so we bought a new differential to see if that could fix the problem.

Oh wow, when I saw the diff get pulled I did not expect the problem was going to be solved. Good to know in case I hear that noise and my fluid is running clean on a change!

I drove one of these many years ago when it was new. The turbo lag was a bit disappointing, but I'm guessing that could be easily remedied.

This is great. Nice blend of showing wrenching action/problems without making it too lengthy. Looking forward to getting that CEL and mistery rattle sorted. One thing though, in other videos and in podcasts you don't sound nearly as Texan as in this video. Mexican and ESL but y'all makin' me remember that time I worked with Memphians, bless their hearts.

I have replaced a Subaru rear with a factory entire rear center section to have a pinion bearing fail in a few thousand miles, with the same bearing whine. Also.... never use a torque wrench to break a stuck fastener free!! this will mess with the calibration. Lastly, I see that you guys look to have Porter Cable themed tools (as do I) their 1/2" 20v impact is a beast and worth the investment!

I had a similar whine in my FJ Cruiser (who knew Toyota's had issues). But it was the pinion bearing/bushing that was the issue. I bet similar here. At highway speed it sang the song of its people. Probably could get that old unit re built/new bearings (pinion bearing is really the pinion bushing). Its a bit involved to do it yourself as its full disassembly then setting backlash with a dial indicator but once done you either have a spare or can sell for money.

Even though it all looked good, a worn bearing in the pinion or something could cause that noise and look good. Surprising it did wear out, but shit happens. When you build a diff it's really tricky getting the pinion depth, etc setup right such that it doesn't whine. Which is all to say the old diff is still rebuildable and worth something to someone who can do it!

It’s sad this has to be even considered, but I would be very careful about filming in/out of your residence/neighborhood. In this day and age, you can very easily doxx yourself with street signs and business names. Outside of that general safety advice, keep these coming!
