I recently purchased the model 4000 lathe of Sherline. Of course I really like it. Next purchase from Sherline will be this for sure. Thank you for your great video!

Another Great Video, Vince. The South Bend 9" lathes only had a 3C collet, too. That was the standard lathe in a lot of tool rooms for decades. I like all the new improvements to the sherlines that they have done. The Collet opener/closer is a great one.

We need to see these small lathes, the micro as well as the mini lathes out there cut hard metal. I need one that can do this accurately and repeat it.all I ever seem them show off with is cutting aluminum, brass and some copper.

Thankyou. This is the first I'm seeing this product. I'm going to wait for the diy swissmak mill turn machine to start shipping. Both of these are looking good.

Since the video is 2 years old it may be covered already but you can do tool changes without having to confirm the change by editing your code. Something like T0101, T0102, T0103 etc instead of T0101, T0202, T0303. Hope that’s clear. Saves cycle time and you can walk away. I have learned so much from you and Marty and can’t thank you guys enough!

Hi. You can do it any way you would like. I choose to have a stop between tool changes but you can easily setup the system to complete tool changes without any optional stops or manual conformation. Thanks for watching!

@@FrancoCNC You can use the stops as tool change cycles if you use a single quick change tool post and pre set tools.

So cool! Ive just gotten a beat up original Australian 3" lathe, this is giving me ideas. Looking at that collet closer, you could almost automate a small bar feeder if you drive the closer and the bar with an independent simple grbl setup and two steppers.

Great video as usual Franco! Thanks for putting the acorn info out there... the only thing left to add to this lathe is a coolant pump and a pneumatic collet opener/closer - and you'll have a barfeed mechanism.

Also that quick chuck is just asking for a pneumatic cylinder and a bar puller. Automated sherline. Use an arduino to control that side of it, trigger from the acorn. Servo spindle motor, pneumatic spindle or cheap small Chinese ones on the gang tooling.. Live tooled, bar fed sherline CNC lol

Nice machine Franco I think you would find ER collet holders good for holding drills, I think they would save you some Z space. I use gang tooling a lot, particularly for drills, I like to have the drill point level with the position of the parting tool as this means it should not hit the chuck or headstock. Nice collet closer, much better than my home made unit.

You are spot on about the tool lengths - it's best to keep the tool tips on the same plane.

Franco, I learned the hard way as my lathes all home the X axis first, so if a tool is out beyond my turret, it is very easy to have loud noises occur.. Reverse would be good, but do remember your chuck screws on!

Very cool. From the centroid FAQ’s they say you can run both the lathe and the mill from one board. My intentions are to unplug the mill steppers and plug in the X & Y into the the same X & Y the mill uses. Any concerns that you see with that? I’m going to be using both Acorn Pro mill and lathe software. I’m using you as cheap tech support since your videos convinced me to go with the Acorn, which has proven to be a great choice.
@FrancoCNC
@FrancoCNC 6 жыл бұрын
It is possible. I recommend you purchase two inexpensive DB25 breakout boards. Use one BOB for the mill and the other for the lathe. Then, you can use the DB25 connection on the Acorn to interface to either of the two BOB's. I think this would be the easiest/best/safest way to get there. You can mount the Acorn and the 24V power supply in a small enclosure and use it for all of your machines.
@heeder777

Franco Thanks! I just saw your response and will consider that, makes sense though, I was noodling the easiest way to run both without investing in another Acorn.

Thanks. So far, no regrets. I really like the Centroid software/hardware and the closed loop steppers are WAY better than any open loop system. I had to piece it together myself, but was less expensive than the Sherline CNC package. That being said, I'm sure the Sherline CNC system works just fine - it just wasn't what I wanted to use.

Hey Franco thanks for the vids. I'm looking at getting one but considering the 18" cross slide and 18" base. I have the standard Sherline manual lathe as well and originally it was the smaller base model and I need up upgrading it to the 18" base, as I always felt too cramped and sometimes a bit limited with the smaller base. SO I wanted to ask you if you feel like the 18" table and base would be better? Do you regret not going with the bigger one for its versitily? It's only about 120.00 bucks more.

Hi again Franco, Going to get the chucker lathe. Im deciding on what controller to go with. Do you think the Acorn is better than the Masso control? How much did you spend on the Acorn? seems much cheaper. Any input would be awesome If you have a vid on the topic comparing them lmk. Thank you.
@FrancoCNC
@FrancoCNC 3 жыл бұрын
I like the Centroid Acorn system. But, I think Sherline has a working relationship with Masso and it may be easier to get that up and running in your case. Both options are good. For a lathe, you can't go wrong either way.

You sound like my wife. If I had a nickel for every time she has asked me that...well, you know how it goes. True, it is a small lathe but most of the stuff I make is small. I make a lot of stand-offs and posts. Threaded connectors for my RC cars. Little fittings and adapters. Things of that nature.

I'm running out of room in my garage - and free time in my schedule is becoming scarce. The Sherline is a good compromise for me right now. It's small, but it works well and all I have to do is install the electronics.

There is no reverse as the standard Sherine lathe uses a screw on type spindle nose... A reverse feature would allow chucks and other accessories to remove themselves under load and cause all sorts of damage for anything other than collet types

That makes zero sense, there are millions of small, and medium sized lathes since the 1900's with screw on chucks...all have reverse! Examples, Atlas/Craftsman, Southbend, just two hobby lathes, screw on chucks were the norm until the 60's/late 70's!
