The Grey Lady, my 2006 BMW X5 with a 6-speed manual, has been through a lot in the last year. From vacuum leaks to misfires to mis-diagnoses, I was finally able to determine that we had poor compression and scored cylinder walls on the 270k mile / 426k km engine. But instead of sending it to the great automotive scrapyard in the sky, I decided that I'm going to save this big gentle beast.
So, I got a free engine from some of my friends, and now it's time to take it all apart, rebuild it completely, and get my X5 back into fighting shape for the next 200 thousand miles.

Just when I thought I couldn't be more amazed due to your multilingual skills, you go ahead and drop the engine! Excellent work as always, and right to the point. I can't wait to see the next part where you do the bottom end. Maybe you should think about doing the timing chain tensioner mod and not just the pump nut wire. Keep it up!

Thank you for watching! I always try to keep it entertaining, and I try to show my mistakes because, well, otherwise I might come off as a completely perfect robot. What’s the tensioner mod you mentioned? I’m planning to use the S54 tensioner instead of the original.

foreign languages and jazz background music? you make an old bubba feel all cultured and stuff. M539 is a killer channel. you should also check out day off DIY for more redoubtable roundel restos. also glad to see your new motor survived the altitude change - I think you had some luck with it landing partially on the base of the engine stand instead of straight to concrete.
