Some mixed feelings about a Swedish debut novel, thoughts on the way I read, and an old favourite author.

It's Nightwatch for me too, favourite of those, probably The Fifth Elephant but there isn't a dud among them. Other than those I like the Witch books followed by Death, not mad keen on Rincewind but they're ok, quite like Tiffany Aching. Enjoy the standalones too, particularly Maurice and His Educated Rodents, Unseen Accademicals and Monstrous Regiment. You've made me want to reread Sam Vimes now...

The Fifth Elephant is brilliant, and Monstrous Regiment. I really liked the first Tiffany Aching, I need to read more of those. I have completely forgotten all the ones I read when I was young too so that's a bonus because I get to re-read them. There are loads I've never read too.

My favourite Discworld books are the Watch and the Witch (including Tiffany Aching) books. Wyrd Sisters was the one that kickstarted by newfound Discworld obsession a couple of years ago. I still haven't dared to read the final Tiffany Aching (which is also the final book overall), but the first four of her books rank very highly for me. In terms of art style, I prefer some of the more understated covers for recent reissues, but I do have a soft spot for those original covers even though I don't think they necessarily capture what I picture when I read the books.

I loved Wee Free Men, I need to get the rest of that. I'm glad people seem to like the witch ones a lot. No once ever seems to like Rincewind the most.

I've not read this book, but your thoughts were interesting. I haven't read Terry Pratchett either 🙈 Still reading Ancestors. Also Fourth Wing. Listening to how to say babylon from the women's prize non fiction list 😊

That's an interesting mix of books 😁 Pratchett was a friend of the people who run Red Lion Books so he was always in Colchester, I never met him though.

I'm way behind on Pratchett - I've tried the first of the Tiffany Achings, Hogfather, and Going PostalAt any rate, the first two of those were okay for me, but I adored Going Postal. I keep hearing about the City Watch series being really good. I should get to more Pratchett! And heh, my ginormous copy of Collected Works (hardcover, 873pp) has arrived, so now I'll have to get to it! I hope you're right that maybe this is better in small bits, as I'm another that reads a whole bunch of books at once.

Wee Free Men and Going Postal are two of my favourite non-city watch ones. You should try Guards Guards! Let me know how Collected Works goes for you, I did think the last 200 pages were way above the usual standard of debut novels, and a lot of the writing really. I would rank modern literary fiction as probably my least favourite genre so would also take my opinion with a pinch of salt haha.

Just because lots of people loved Collected Works doesn’t mean your opinion isn’t just as valid Aaron, we can’t all love the same books! And yes, can’t wait to see what she does next. The Erotic Door thing made me choke on my breakfast 😂, do they mean that literally or is it just a title for a series?? I quite like the new Terry Pratchett covers although the older ones have that nostalgic feel, I’ve only read a couple but still, those covers have been around a long time.

I believe the front door turns into a man and they fall in love. I did think Lundgren handled the character development very well, and there was a lot of things I really liked about it. I've never had a book go from annoying me to being really gripping and back so many times, it was an interesting experience!
