**I’ve had the R9M for over 1 year.. After a lot of testing and frustration I feel this system is adequate for most situations.. In short, I recommend the R9M w/Flex Firmware/Fport, the R9 Slim/Slim+ and Immortal T antennas for the best experience. Also, I'm struggling with rssi readings :/
It’s a shame FrSky decided to put shitty micro ipex connectors on the R9 Mini & R9MM receivers. Haven’t seen anyone talk about this but thought it was worth mentioning! IF POSSIBLE I WILL AVOID BUYING THE R9 MINI OR R9 MM BECAUSE OF THIS.
IF FRSKY IS LISTENING PLEASE CONSIDER USING THE LARGER IPEX CONNECTORS FOR ALL R9 SERIES RECEIVERS.

Great video man! I just picked up an R9M and a few R9 minis with a True RC True-MoX 915 antenna. Your video makes it look pretty straight forward to set up. Thanks for making it look easy!

Swoop AF thanks, the first time is frustrating.. once you make the adapter cable + buy male connectors for R9 mini it’s easy (I always update w/any new firmware releases)..

Got started with my new FPV stuff yesterday, thanks for the guide. Worked flawless. Now I flashed openTX 2.2.4, bootloader, my R9M and my R9 slim+.

Hi ! What firmware did you flash on the R9M ? I Flashed the Flex but for some reason I can't set the 1W adaptive option, did you try this ?

@@Kalishir I flashed the latest firmware from 2/13.. The only issue I have is inconsistent/unreliable rssi readings. This has been an on and off issue with some of my setups. Range is still impressive but going to buy a crossfire as it makes me nervous when flying past 1 mile. Also, I have not had any issues with the adaptive/1W setting.

@@windwalkerfpv I found out my problem, I had to go to setting in Campanion and set the FlexRm option before I could use the flex options in the bind page.

a bit late but after more builds/testing I've found fport/sbus/smartport to be easier to setup compared with trying to run fport (more issues with fport).

I've been looking for a vid just like this. Just got my R9M and R9mm yesterday. I know nothing about setting it up. I do believe this covers it all and this vid answered some questions I already had. Mainly setting up rssi and flashing firmware. Thx so much. Wish me luck. 🤘😁👍

Thanks a lot.. also, i'm still testing/will update one thing with the video... Before setting up RSSI in your taranis you should just try fport and see if RSSI shows up on aux12.. So far its been working okay on my latest setup.

@@windwalkerfpv ...yes thx I will. I was able to get opentx updated and the r9M flashed . Ran out of time today. Tomorrow I hope to finish up everything and test fly. Thx again for such a detailed video. Although after updating my taranis, which I know it did properly, it still shows that it's running version 2.2.0 and not 2.2.3. But the ability to change to ext module r9m is there and available so I know it updated.

@@windwalkerfpv ...just got everything setup and working with R9M and R9mm. Everything works except I had one hick up which I've ran into before. The RX wasn't communicating so I checked the serialrx_inverted status and in the CLI it showed off. It was working that way with a XM+. So I set serialrx_inverted = ON and it was now talking to FC. I could have never done this with out this extremely well detailed video. You showed virtually every single step . I absolutely cannot thank you enough. New sub !!!!! 🤘😁👍

@@RCinginSC Thank you.. I was very frustrated/could not find any complete setup videos for the R9M.. When I posted my first setup a year ago everyone said the R9M was a failure and did not work.. I hope others have the same good experience I did, it saved a lot of money over crossfire..

Thank you! To answer your questions setup and updates for the R9M/receivers will be the same... it's the wiring and osd configuration that varies. I prefer having an fc with osd and gps information for any long range fpv setup. Quads require a flight controller, you load flight firmware like Betaflight, Butterflight, FlightOne, INAV, etc... These programs allow configuration of flight modes, settings & OSD. Planes don't require a flight controller but its recommended for long range flying. I'm still working on a setup, it will use INAV. INAV has a configurable OSD w/RSSI, batt and GPS info.. You can also setup a lot of auto features like take-off, landing, waypoints and return to home.. *I've tested my FPV wing at 5 miles (8 kilometers). Also, I only had my tx at 100mw!

Hi, thank you for the video, it helped a lot. Unfortunately, when I got to the firmware upgrade for the r9 slim receiver, I do not have an option to "flash external device", the options I have are..."flash S. port device" or "flash Rx by est.OTA" when I choose either option it does not recognise the receiver nor does it update. I have tried the update on a profile with the r9m module installed and a module without the r9m. When picking the option with the r9m module, the receiver will turn red even before I get to the firmware update, whereas with yours, it only turns red when you select "flash external device". When I choose a model without the r9m, it is as yours is showing without a light on the receiver only offers one option "flash S.port device" and when selected, it says no device can be found. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi everyone I have a problem with R9m & r9slim+ I cannot bind them. I updated firmwares v1.2.0 lbt, transmitter x9d+ v2.3.0 when I chose external module R9m lbt it shows me (certified firmware required) . After I continue and finish bind procedure. Result: they are not binded. I tried to do it few times results same. Is anybody nows how to resolve this problem? Please help. I’m in United Kingdom

Good day. Tell me how long does the R9mm work for you? For six months I changed seven pieces. Just at one point it starts to fail and stops binding. I thought it might overheat and began to put further from the hot parts but one hell stupidly begin to lose touch. I try to find information about such problems but in vain. I thought I was unlucky for the first time, probably a marriage, but seven times in a row on different copters with different fillings.

Hi, I have taranis x9d plus, r9m module, ande r9 slim plus. I worked according to your guide, but for some reason I can't bind my receiver - It doesn't bind. Do you know what can be the problem? I am using flex firmware, and opentx 2.3.4

Is flex box checked in open tx? Also, frsky has 2 versions of the flex fw, one is std flex one is flex for f.port. Make sure you choose the same one for both.. trying to remember off the top of my head.

If I want to run F port on the mamba F405 the uart 6 is designated tele. I have the R9 slim plus so does the ass bus out go to TX six or RX six and all I need are those three wires power ground and S bus out?

Checkout my new CL1 build video, it shows how I wired my R9 slim+. Also, since posting this video (a long time ago) I have had a lot of issues running fport. I now stick with sbus and smartport.

Great job. I mistakenly bought a couple of R9 mini EU receivers. I thought I would have to return them since I live in the US. I wondered if I could simply flash the receivers with the US version (FCC)? Is that possible? It's sort of a hassle but I don't feel like returning them. I would probably have to flash them anyway. Thanks for taking the time to give a step by step process.

I would like to setup a long range offshore RC fishing boat, I have no idea what I need to purchase. I mean from radio to ESC to receiver. Where might I find a list of equipment I would need to make a nice little RC fishing vessel for a large lake and off shore? Ideas? 500 + yds is the goal is this reasonable? FPV is not required just boat control.. Thanks!

strange, unfortunately I have stopped using this system. It was very frustrating to setup/update/etc.. plus I have lost quads due to the R9M. I am now using the Tango II from TBS.

Great video. I was wondering have you ever had any intermittent twitches in flight? I have experienced it and just watched a video and he was having the same issue. After watching your video and you said to go with the bigger rx so you can put the better antenna on it. I have been using the small rx with the tiny coax connecter. I have experienced it with several different rx and had the same issue. The video all he used were the small ones. I am going to get a bigger one and the team black sheep antenna. I always run 100 mw.

Come to think of it I've had that happen a few times in the past, has not happened to me with the slim+. Also, I'm not sure if this is true but I seem to get better reception w/the frsky t-antennas. Another thing, even though I like the slim rx w/larger ipex I cannot get a stable rssi feed and don't trust it past a mile. I will be switching to crossfire soon..

+1👍 this vid popped into my recommended list... Slim+ all the way! i could not get better than 400 meters on my Mini. Slim+ solved my woes, but i find i get a more range on the FrSky upgraded T-antennae -- i get 900+ meters on them, but only 650 ish on the originals. (100mW Lite) i don't know why the originals are less; maybe because they don't stay perfectly straight when mounting with zip-ties and heat-shrink, but uncertain.

i'd have to read up but I just think its lower frequency/has more range (and penetration). I had pushed this system to 5.5 miles with a small racing wing and large lipo lol. I just don't use it anymore, with new tbs products, price drops and trade-in credit its pretty affordable to switch. I have tango II now, going to get full crsf tx as well. Software/link is much more reliable and will recover signal much quicker if you do have interference/fs. I lost 2 quads because of R9 both in situations that I know my tango II would have been fine (even though its a lower output power).

Not sure what to try, I've always had rssi appear on the radio. Maybe try checking for updates, make sure the sd card contents are also updated and flex box for flex firmware.

Hi, I bought R9M 2019 + R9 mini, on the stock firmware I managed to bind them, now I updated R9M with access firmware V 1.3.0 and I updated r9 mini with access firmware V 1.3.0.Now R9M wont get into binding mode, there is just solid red light, I tryed to bind it with transmitter, and modul alone powered with externall battery with both dip switches on their ON possition and I am getting same results.R9M doesnt flash red light like it should when in bind mode. What should I do about it? Please help.

I would try reloading fw, most common issue I had was that one didn't work/r9 module and rx need to be on the same fw version to bind. Ultimately I have to say that this system is not very user friendly and has been plagued with fw issues. TBS products are much higher quality, they give trade-in credit for r9 and have lowered prices/introduced a lot of new products. I only fly with my Tango II/try to stay away from frsky products at this point :/ also, sorry for the late reply, youtube only just showed me your comment from 3 months ago..

Yes the r9m is a huge improvement over any 2.4 system. Has good range but rssi readings seem inconsistent. I've managed to test at 5mi but it didn't inspire any confidence. I still believe this is a good systems for the $ but am planning to buy a crossfire soon. Really depends on budget/what your doing.

I know this is an old video but I'm using xlite pro, r9m lite pro, r9 mini ota. When I enable telemetry on the receiver I het a constant never ending telemetry lost/telemetry found every2 seconds. If I'm in betaflight the channels never lose link but the telemetry always comes and goes. Fcc firmware latest. Please help if you have any suggestions

sorry I didn't get back to you.. just coming back to the channel but yeah R9 seemed to be plagued with issues that only got worse. I've kinda abandoned any frsky links, use edge tx and crossfire :/. Also, I'm not sure telemetry has much output even crossfire only recently released a pro rx with full range telemetry.

True.. they are all called receivers though, primary purpose is to receive your control inputs.

You need an r9 type receiver they operate on a different frequency.

Hey thanks for the show! Why are there TWO connections and two antennas on the SLIM +? Do you only need one if you use one SBUS? Can you jumper to the other input and run two antennas. I think I have confused myself thinking about how it really can work. TIA!

Thanks... The 1st connection, "CON 1" is for hooking up to quads (sport/sbus). The 2nd connection "CON 2" is for using with servos (rc plane). The 2 antenna connections just allow for antenna diversity (like how most fpv goggles have 2 antennas). I have been running the Slim+ w/1 antenna connected.. 2 is not needed but it allows you to do so.

@@Aridrona Yes... I still need to test with 2 antennas (only used w/1). Also, need to do additional testing for slim+... RSSI was unstable/very low on my first test. I then switched the 1 antenna to the other available connector and RSSI was okay... If you have any issues try moving the antenna over.

I was told the FLEX firmware enables the MW's to go up as you go farther. That way you dont have to change it manually as you fly farther.

I think it already had that.. I don't really remember anymore/use crossfire now but thought flex allowed you to flash for US/EU fw. etc.

The radio puts out Vbatt voltage to the receiver, just make sure whatever battery voltage your Taranis is using is compatible with the receiver voltage. People have been known to fry receivers!

I don't rememeber, I can't recommend either, both have very small/fragile ipex connectors. Also, I have lost a few quads at short distances with R9 and cannot recommend this system anymore. TBS has a lot of new products, has dropped prices and offers trade-in credit for your R9 gear. I highly recommend making the switch (also, I love my Tango II).

When trying to flash the firmware on the receiver, (R9 Slim + OTA version) the options I get aren't external/internal module it's either an ota option or an s-port option. i've tried both, the former tries to find an rx but never can, and the latter just says that the device isn't responding. I have the vcc, s-port, and ground cables plugged in. Can anyone help me sort this out?

How you getting rssi with betaflight aux12 as rssi channel and tx you have it set to channel 9?? Wouldn’t you need to Change the aux in betaflight to match what’s on tx? I understand aux 12 is actually Chan 16 and you chose channel 9 would be like aux 5 or 6 wouldn’t it??

Yes, I have not had time to update this video.. I believe aux12 is just fport telemetry. I have configured rssi through the taranis and tried fport on both my quads with multiple rx. I have yet to get a quad where I trust the rssi reading. It seems that the system varies in range from day to day / plug in to plug in. Although I have not had any failsafes or lost any quads because of the R9M I do not feel that I can trust it in the long term or with my now fairly expensive gear. I will reserve this system for my small/low cost quads and planes but am PLANNING TO PURCHASE A CROSSFIRE TX LITE AT $150. I FEEL THE COST IS WORTH THE PEACE OF MIND. IN GENERAL THE R9M IS STILL MUCH BETTER THAN A 2.4 SYSTEM..

excellent video, I think you see RSSI on ch aux 12 is because you use the reciver software that put the RSSI on ch 16. i have the same slim+ without any configuration on the x9d and I have the RSSI on ch 12.

That is correct, I made a mistake and haven't had time to update my video. Also, I have done a lot of testing/don't seem to get a reliable rssi feed from either method... It works but my range is not consistent from day to day. This scares me when I am consistently flying $600+ drones over unrecoverable areas. I am considering getting a crossfire as the new TBS AgentX has a mac version.

agree, I got frustrated after filming/binding the quad many times. I was fairly certain the props wouldn't spin as I had gone through the process on the same quad many times w/out any issues. I only did it that once because I didn't want to take them off... still not a good idea!

I was using gps for a while, didn't try to use it as a failsafe.. This is not related to the r9, I setup through betaflight in order to have home arrow/gps info on my osd. You can use gps as a failsafe but makes me nervous for the type of flying I do.. I am usually under trees/in a sketchy spot when something bad happens. I would like to try gps failsafe for long range flights but don't trust the r9m past a mile (getting crossfire soon).

@@windwalkerfpv yeah GPS works great it depends on the range it wont go off unless you hit the switch you can go through trees and stuff it only works if you 300m or hit the switch but with this R9m i want to go far with the two ant set up and not failsafe but i cant seem to get the slim plus to work

I haven't tried any of the new ota rx's or 2019 module (not sure if it changed). As far as I know gps is seperate/wired to your fc and should not affect binding of the rx/tx. I would check wiring, usually wrong pad, inverted, etc.. It could also be a fw issue, I am tired of fw/qc issues and am switching to crossfire soon.

In Opentx companion, you should set the options before downloading and updating the firmware to ensure the options you selected are included in the downloaded firmware.

Ok, first off, great job on going step by step through this process. I hate videos that assume too much. I got the update to the R9M module and the R9mm rx done. Before the update I was having trouble binding the rx even though I had bound it and flew the quad once before. Tried everything several times and still no go so I thought I would update the firmware and found this video. Got all the way up to the bind procedure and still cannot get it to bind, all I get it a solid red and green led at all times. And now in addition to that my tx module does not have any lites on at all. I double checked the firmware files and they are the right ones. Have I bricked something? Is there a reset procedure at all? I’ve ordered another rx in case I did brick something but wondering about the tx now. HELP!

This doesn't sound like an issue with the rx... If your r9m module is working than the light will be on. I would make sure that: 1) flex r9m box is checked in opentx 2) opentx is updated and sd card files replaced 3) re install r9m module firmware If the light on the module turns on then you can try to bind.

Armed FPV thanks for the quick reply. I had the boxes check correctly and the updated version of opentx. Having trouble with the sad card contents at this point and do have a version warning about the card when I power tx up. Have not tried reinstalling the firmware yet.

Armed FPV I reloaded everything from scratch to make sure I got all the right files this time. The module and rx updated/wrote just fine. Wired the rx back in and still getting solid red and green light when I try to bind. I even unsoldered the other wires and just left the power and ground wires and same thing. This is very frustrating.

Just to be clear, for the r9mm you wire the fport wire from the receiver to the sbus on the flight controller? With no sbus to the flight controller?

yes, with fport & the r9mm/mini your smartport pin on the rx is now your fport output and replaces sbus... just the one wire.

@rob malan Also, I recommend securing your antenna really well if using the R9MM or R9 Mini. I'm not a big fan of the smaller ipex connectors.. If you have room in your build I would go with the slim or slim+ and tbs immortal t antennas.

Check your rssi is set to the correct channel in betaglight. Also, I think Joshua Bardwell has a video on scaling for rssi.

the r9m's range will outperform any 2.4 system. I think youget what you pay for.. crossfire is the best system but costs more.

Mine won't bind it has red/green during bind but after it's just red and it's not a flash it's flickers.. I tried flex on both r9m and r9mm but nothing. Opentx 2.2.3 also

@@DangerDavefpv that is wierd, I would check wiring & voltage to rx. You could try the older firmware, not much difference between any of the updates. I feel they have all been stable except telemetry is a mess (rssi readings are not consistent/seem false). I didn't used to have this problem :/ maybe I need to go back to some of the older firmware releases :/

Armed FPV you don’t send telemetry back to the reciever, what happens that way you will run out of telemetry long before rssi and will failsafe way early , Fport transmits rssi on channel 16 automatically so no need for any setup on taranis, chances are you will have to adjust the rssi scale in betaflight anything from 140-155 in cli ( rssi_scale value ) to get the correct scale , and did I get that right you put the smart port wire for Fport to sbus on your fc , if you did that is wrong sbus is not bi directional it’s only one way so your running in sbus mode , it has to go to a uart tx that’s not sbus dedicated .

@@windwalkerfpv nope, but as far as I know tbs does the trade in giving 50% value to your r9 gear, which is a really good detail on them, but the problem is they ship the new transmitter from china an that takes time. Im going to sell it as a bundle with my qx7 and then upgrade to tx16s. When I noticed I have to solder a few cables in order to have full functionality I got mad lol. I'm done with Frsky stuff!

Idk, if you can afford it I'm switching to crossfire. R9 has too many fw/qc issues for me, if you can't afford it get a few extra receivers as I've had bad/good ones. Also, I like the slim receivers simply because they have the larger ipex connectors.

I've been hearing similar issues more and more (wasn't a problem before). Also, others with this issue hinted that they are not using flex firmware.. Personally I would try using flex, it works the same just you can choose the frequency in your radio.

Flex FW didn’t fix my issue unfortunately. I’m going to try reverting to an old ass backup I have and start from one of the earliest RX firmwares and work my way up from there

I haven't tried crossfire yet but not very happy with the R9M. I wouldn't trust it with a high $ setup. Just look through the comments, most people have issues with the R9M. Those who don't probably don't need reliable rssi etc..

depends.. I have a few modules + tried a few of each receiver. They don't seem very consistent, I had a few setups that could do a 3-5 miles no problem. Nowadays I'm lucky if I can get a mile before rssi drops to 20 or less :/

So even though you bound with 8 channels+telemetry for lower latency.. the RSSI still comes through channel 12? That's pretty good. I thought that if you bind with 8 channels, you only get 8 channels to play with (ch1-4 for sticks, ch5-8 only)

You configured the Taranis to output only channel 1 to 8 and thus your channel 9 will not be sent. But you are using F-Port Firmware. F-Port does output RSSI directly from the receiver on channel 16 (aux12). So you don't need to send RSSI back to the receiver. If you now configure the Taranis to send all 16 channels you will see the RSSI on channel 9 and 16. But it would be best to delete the RSSI config from the Taranis.

@@mmarsian Thanks, I will do additional testing.. for some reason my RSSI would stop working when I deleted the tx configuration so I assumed f-port telemetry wasn't working. I am no expert/don't typically do setup videos... Just frustrated that we have so little information and so many are having issues with this system.

I have tried OpenTX both 2.2.3 and 2.2.4 with and without flexr9m option and relatively flashed R9M module and R9MM receiver with LBT (no flexr9m checked when flashing opentx) and flex firmware (selected flexr9m)... It still does not work... It can randomly bind to receiver... But after 10 seconds green light goes back to red and it says telemetry lost... I tried both SBUS, FPort (with related firmware) on both F4 and F4 boards with 3 different R9MM receiver in case the receiver is not working But still no luck... Antennas are in OK condition and matching to 868MHZ ... Does it make difference that it writes EU LBT or NOT on the R9M module... Since you upload the correct firmware, it's the same hardware right? any help?

It sounds like you have regular firmware on the module and flex on the rx? I think you need to download most recent flex for both the module and rx's. Flex firmware should support both 868mhz & 915mhz

@@windwalkerfpv On the Facebook page for R9M, someone posted the e-mail he received form FrSky acknowledging the issue with somes series of R9MM. On the group itself, it's easy to see that 80% of the problems happen on the R9MM and almost none ever happend with the Slim +

thanks for the info and walkthrough man. waiting on my 2019 r9m to come in. it just baffles me that to update the recievers and what not we have to go through all this jerry rigging to simply update firmware... this hobby isnt anything new but the hardware and software progression is still so janky and everything that we get from china is 50/50 hit or miss if it will work. youd think someone would come up with a standardized updating and hardware procedures to make this shit easier for simpletons or people like me who have zero luck with shit working like it does in theory... i swear every little issue everyone has with hardware and software in fpv ive had all in one.... been trying to learn this hobby for 2 years and have done far more research then most i bet, yet still i have 3 fried quads sitting in the shop due to faulty software and hardware. 2 lost quads and a go pro in the woods somewhere due to faulty software and hardware. and in 2 years and 2000$ spent ive got about 5 decent 6 mins flights in total between 5 quads with no working quads at the moment.... how much more bullshit must i go through to get a working fucking rig..... the support for this shit is only coming from community members like yourself. thanks again man.

I really appreciate that, my videos are not perfect and I may not be right on every point.. I too find it extremely irritating that we cannot get simple instructions and procedures to setup/update these things. Not sure if you're the same, I am very good mechanically but struggle with all the software/setup. Bob (KababFPV's) content helped me get through betaflight and build a reliable setup. I Also, I am saving/slowly upgrading my gear. It's not worth losing a quad at $300-$600. I already lost a $700 setup, a situation where the crossfire would not have failed (R9M did). Not saying the R9M is a bad product but you tend to get what you pay for. I am going to purchase a crossfire at this point because its worth the $150-$208 for piece of mind. If you want a more reliable setup I use the following products: •TBS or Rush VTX •AXII antennas on quad (VAS make some good antennas, I have a set on my goggles). •Runcam - I've never had an issue with their fpv cams (I like the micro eagle for freestyle). •ESC - I've been running the Aikon AK32 V2. Never had a failure (I want to try flightone & hobbywing). •Motors - Only tried a few, but the Xing motors are really nice (I have 2208, 1800kv). •FC, I have not found an FC I like. Helio was good but the company failed. I was interested in trying BrainFPV but am leaning towards the FliteOne. Mostly for EASE OF SETUP. Hope you have better look getting a reliable setup and actually getting some stick time. Another product I might consider is the new TP3, 3" toothpick from KababFPV. Its just an ultralight 3" build. I find these new high performance micros to take more crashes than a 5". It's also a lot safer and no chance of losing something when it's only 50' from you.

@@windwalkerfpv hell yea dude thanks for the info, been learning alot more lately and yes im the same way, industrial maintenance technician so im good with the hardware but the software always seems to do me in some little tiny way. i did finally spend a little time and money building a new quad but came across one issue... bad motors that were shorting to the motor mount somehow, in turn shorting through the carbon and burning a strap off the carbon frame!?! never seen it before. but that was the only problem with this build, but i got what i paid for, racerstar 8$ brs motors... got some xing-e's on the way now, using a ifloght xl7 frame, mamba f405 mk2 stack, rush fpv tank mini, r9 slim+, 880 gps, vifly beeper, and foxeer mix 2. thing is a budget/premium master piece once i get the better motors on. keep up the good work man, the community appreciates it. oh and yes i say kababs awesome tp3's but they were sold out once i got to them lol, id like to build one of those out next but i cant get over how unreliable the whoop aio boards are...

I agree,its a great hobby and I enjoy building them but the programming and firmware updates are fustrating. I just lost throttle response on 2 of my models it doesn't show up on my qx7 or beta flight all my other models work fine?

I can t get rssi signal I can see it on the screen of my taranis but not in the osd do you know how?

Have you followed the steps to setup rssi on the taranis plus assigned the correct channel for rssi in betaflight?

They have ota (over the air rx's) which are supposed to update wirelessly.. I haven't tried it/think you have to have one of the newer modules too. I ended up buying a Tango II/switching to crossfire.

Windwalker FPV im currently trying to hook my slim+ up. I only bought the system for a means of not really having to worry about failsafe while flying since I'm mostly in residential areas. I'd love to get a crossfire if only they didn't charge an arm and a leg when the hobby itself is quite expensive as it is. But I'm trying to figure out the binding to my diatone. I'm not sure how to power up the receiver from my quad. I already burnt out a module and receiver because I'm an idiot but I just want to make sure I have the right wires in the correct ports to power it on.

My gtr349 has a power cable for a receiver with the 8 pin connector. Just need to know which wires go where when plugging them into the slim+ for binding

As of February 2020 is anyone still comfortable running the R9 stuff? All across the internet and youtube there seems to be a unanimous opinion of unreliability and safety issues. The OP of this video is against it, Oscar Lang is against it, Bardwell, and countless other across the hobby are saying no way to the R9 stuff. I have a brand new Xlite and Xlite pro with a ton of different RX sitting new in their boxes I bought 6 months or so ago. Now that life has given me the time to play with them and update some of my fleet I'm afraid the ship has sailed already and the technology was a bust :(

I would have to agree with you/don't trust it at this point. I have a Tango 2 on the way and will be happy to switch from the R9. That being said I've had a lot of luck using the latest flex firmware with sbus/fport. Its a decent budget system that beats 2.4 but does not give the confidence/performance of tbs products. Also, this is a bit of an old video. I saw many struggling to get the r9 working at all. I simply shared what I was able to do but have not had time to time to post many updates.
