@@davemonster2 Yeah, it's meant to make someone happy. But if you love a thing that is consistently going downhill, it's not your fault that you're upset that it's going downhill. And Discourse just wants to inform people about these things. That's why I'm subbed and considering supporting her patreon. It's a hard position when you love a thing so much, but the company that makes the thing is a bunch of d-bags, diminishing your enjoyment. I'm sure Discourse would love to only report nice and happy and great things about one of her favorite hobbies - until such time as GW gets their dinguses out of their ears, though, what is she supposed to do? There is one big factor that GW seems to forget in their whale milking. those whales need someone to actually play against, if there is no one to fight, why the hell should they spend more on miniatures they will never be able to use? maaaaaaybe they are lucky and catch two whales in the same city, but even then, nobody wants to play against the same opponent every single time
@DiscourseMinis
@DiscourseMinis Жыл бұрын
yeah. this is a huge problem for local game stores because a company like GW might sustain themselves off big spenders but scattered games stores either have to get lucky and be in the area of a whale, or they wont be able to make it (unless they're not reliant on warhammer income ofc). There's an argument to be made that 3D printing actually helps GW in the short term because it ensures that non-whale players can keep up a wargaming population for those whales to play against.
@Nimeya13
@Nimeya13 Жыл бұрын
@@DiscourseMinis I remember back when I actively played (2012 or so) it was already pretty bad and there was a lot of pressure on the local game stores. Manages used to change every 3 month. They hired people that were huge fans, gave them shitty pay and a discount on models, then gave them astronomic goals to reach every single month that had to eclipse the previous month. So when a new space marine book came out, income was high. Next month there was nothing new, income was down and the manager was punished. One time I accidentially saved a manager because I bought a whole deamon army at the end of the month and saved her job for a bit (still got canned soon after). Then they removed the 2 gaming tables they had in the shop by corporate demand and suddenly no one visited the store anymore, used to hang out there after colledge classes, but the new manager just looked at me annoyed that I was not buying something new every day, so I stopped going and soon stopped playing all together. I still love my Eldar army and the sneeky moves I pulled with them.

When I got back into the hobby after a 20 year long hiatus I looked at what I knew first, GW. My favorit games had all been discontinued (Warhammer Fantasy, Gorak-Morka, Mordheim) but hey maybe the new stuff is fun. Then I looked at the prices and though "Well I'm taller than Discourse so I should be fine for some time". Before buying new stuff I watched some tutorials and reviews for the current 40k and AoS because I wanted to get back into the hobby to play games. Took less than an hour before I had orderd a 3D printer and was researching on indigames and alternative. With the quality of their games I'm not sure if their long term strategy is monetising whales. My theory is that they are worried about digitalisation and how sustainable an analog game will be in the future. When you don't belive in the longevity of your product the best course of action is to get everything you can as soon as you can. Not only does that ensure profits you might otherwise miss out on but your numbers are inflated making you look good to investors. Investors you might need to pivit your business model. They are already showing a lot of signs for this such as more agressive IP protection. I don't think they will kill the games as long as they make money but they will do everything they need to be prepared to abondon the physical games if they have to.

I recommend a company called Wargames Atlantic. For a lot of reasons, actually, but first that they have an inexpensive Heavy Weapons kit among their Guard-alike products. A kit that contains roughly double the amount of full heavy weapon models (setting aside having the parts for the other weapon options in the set, so the value is potentially higher). Second, because their ship locally to Australia (got warehouses there), with free shipping for orders over $50 American. So you're paying much less to get the kit. Third, the company has discounts for buying 3+ copies of the same kit, if you want a LOT of heavy weapons.

I actually felt a little overwhelmed thinking about what you need to have to be able to run the full gamit of 40k right now, and want to be a good customer and get everything "legitimately": -core rulebook -army book per army (datacards per army not *required* but very, very incentivized due to the volume of army rules) -Easily over 50 models each to be able to play medium or higher games -Terrain -Boarding Action terrain -Ark of Omen 1 for BA rules -additional arks of omen books for whichever armies are not in arks of omen 1 -modeling tools -time to assemble (50+) models It's...a lot without considering costs. *Considering costs*, it's very prohibitive

The Poorhammer podcast recently did an episode examining which 40K armies it was possible to buy a 2000 pt army under $500 MSRP (which the hosts were very adamant you don't do). That is, a list that's actually balanced, and not just grabbing as much points per dollar, regardless of how good it is. Only four of them made the cut. All that just looking at the models themselves (no rulebooks or anything). Moreover, $500 for an army is STILL bonkers, when you really think about it. It's plastic. It shouldn't cost half a grand just to play a wargame.

@@DiscourseMinis True they hit the vales harder and harder. However there is a rumor that the reason they are doing it, is because they can see the writing on the wall with 3D print. That they have perhaps 10 to 15 years left before 3D printing really kicks off in the same way digital cameras did. When that happens GW knows they will be hit hard on the profit margin, so they will scrape together whatever the can now and when 3D Printing goes into full effect they will be able to retire and leave someone else to pick up the pieces. Then there are the matter of stores and/or local clubs. What is being played in those? I know our local Roleplaying club (where we also play tabletop) we are starting to lack members. So we are hoping we can draw in from various schools and such. However here comes the whole what is played in the clubs is what is getting sold. Lets say Warmachine suddenly got big (not likely as from what i can see they are GW light, same price as GWs minis, but with lackluster lore and complicated rules) well that would be what was bought by the members of the club. Because it was either that or not play at all. So those problems down the road might come really soon. As people simply can´t afford playing Games workshops games so they will have to go to other games to draw in new members or face getting shut down because of too few members.

I still enjoy 40K - I'm playing it with an older version of the rules, my old space marines, necrons, imperial guard and chaos figures and the old codexes. I seldom buy anything GW release anymore. If I want more figures I 3D print proxies and use those - its got to the stage now that many of the designs I'm picking up are better than GW's current stuff. And it works out a hell of a lot cheaper. Plus there's plenty of other great games out there. Bolt Action is amazing, the stuff is cheap and good quality so I tend to buy it rather than print it. Same with Flames of War - their starter sets are tremendous value - 35 quid (Wayland Games 20% off price) gets you two decent-sized armies in a box. I got 3 Hit the beach sets for just over 100 quid and that got me over 30 vehicles, a few hundred infantry and the rules and dice I needed to play. So why would I spend 100 quid with GW to get a box of 20 minis???

This further convinced me that the rumor that GW are going to make the core rules for 10th ed. completely free is true. Then they can argue that this justifies the price increases since the barrier to entry is far lower when a new or casual player doesn't need to buy 100 books per year to keep up. This certainly fits with GW's self-description as a miniatures company, not a wargaming one.

Because why actually sell people books and let them walk away when you can also collect monthy subscription fees you have full control over and people cant walk away without losing access to the rules they need to play? Back in the late 90's I made a 2000 point tyranid army list. Hive tyrant, carnifex (screamer-killer at the time), 3 tyranid warriors (ranged weapons) and about 88 purestrain Genestealers. Guess how much? 50 quid. At the time you could buy a sprue for a pound from space hulk on mail order that had 4 Genestealers on it (and 2 terminators). Hive tyrant metal six quid carnifex metal 13 2 warriors box set plastic 8 bucket ton of the sprues as purestrain were just troops so no cap and they can rip through everything. one pound each.

Everyone can still absolutely play Warhammer. Grab the rules off of Wahapedia, use Battlescribe to make a list, and get 3D printed proxies to play with. People need to remember that this is literally just a game with rules that only the PLAYERS can enforce. It's not a literal LAW, folks! GW can't come to your house and kick over your living room table if you decide to play with proxies. They can't fly over to your LGS and break the windows if they decide to cater to people bringing in 3D printed armies.

My issue is I like the official models more than the proxies in a number of cases. A lot of proxy models are way overdone aesthetically. Not saying they're bad, but they're not to my taste. It's really unfortunate that GW think this way of their customers.

...with all due respect, this has been going on for awhile (well before 2006...like, I remember visiting the GW Battle Bunker in Glen Burnie, MD in 2004 and asking about that as it had been a complaint that I had (and been hearing about) for far longer). I mean, the fact that GW hates its fans (especially the long-time players/customers) was meme-status at least as far back as 2000. I have also been hearing noise for quite some time about how GW is going to implode because their business model is going to eventually cause the whole deck of cards to collapse upon itself. It hasn't happened yet. ...and of course there's the advent of 3D Printing too. I recall hearing about how the advent of 3D printing would surely bring GW to heel on their crappy business practices...and yet here we are. GW is still king of the mountain, lording over a veritable monopoly for tabletop wargames. Make no mistake, I am *NOT* defending GW by any stretch of the imagination. I gave up on giving them money for miniatures and books well over 10 years ago and I would love nothing more than to see them collapse under their own weight, done in by their utter hubris and shitty business practices...but I've been hearing much of what you've been saying on this topic for longer than KZfaq has even been a thing...and I'm not sure it's going to happen at this point. As an old guy ( 52 ) who works in a gaming store where we literally stock hundreds of thousands of dollars of GW product, I think one point often missed is this: MANY of the GW fans I see on a daily basis ( for decades) are PROUD of how much they spend on this stuff. It makes them feel superior to other gamers. Just like people who drive luxury cars or buy ridiculous $5000 hand bags. Complaining to GW about prices will get you just as far as complaining to Ferrari about theirs. As you rightly note in this video, GW DOES NOT CARE if you can’t afford it, and the people who CAN afford it LOVE that you can’t afford it, it’s what makes them feel special.

Interesting thing may be that in Poland we get a lot cheaper everything from GW except Norway which gets a bit cheaper than us. For example Adepta Soroitas Comat Patrol box costs PLN 450(PL) and after converting PLN to other currencies it looks like that: $150(USD)=665 3rd $230(AUS)=713 2nd $180(CAN)=599 5th €120(EU)=572 7th £90(UK)=487 8th kr990(NOR)=436 11th kr1080(SWE)=464 9th kr900(DEN)=576 6th ¥20000(JPN)=660 4th $280(NZD)=787 1st So there are big differences and that's by GW page pricing. AFAIK in Poland(at least) for independent retailers/FLGS price is page number cut in half + VAT which now is for toys(at having children friendly level) 23% so absolutely lowest possibile price for that box would be 277PLN($63USD) and lowest I found online is currently 339PLN($77USD) so we can buy for HALF of GW Stara and other countries counted in $USD. Very good considering international comparison by GW standard, but by other manufacturers they suck, boxes of PerryMiniatures are for 135PLN($31USD), FireForge boxes are for 125PLN($28,5USD)

In Poland, where I am from, you go to a large event and anything between 50% to 70% of players have 3d printed miniatures. This is true especially for high end players, veterans and top players across the board that tend to switch between the armies. It is a huge shift in spending that used to go towards GW new releases. The 3d printing question is an interesting one, because when one considers how whales buy, in part, in order to impress their fellow players, it means that there will always be a share who reject printed models as inferior or counterfeit when compared with official GW products. Then insane part is that these models RnD costs have been paid for a long time go. They've already made that money back thousands of times over. They should be dropping their prices on models and increasing prices elsewhere within there line up. They are increasing their prices not to get faster updates or better/faster balancing changes. Hell, they could even go full online rules and just increase the models in response, but they aren't even trying to improve the game with the extra money. They only want to line their pockets from people who will buy it anyway.
