Any tips for those of us who only have chest OR head voice because we've grown up singing very quietly in our rooms so our mixed voice is non-existent? Asking for a friend😅

Practice while driving so you don’t feel self conscious, and practice yelling “hey!” as if you are trying to get someone’s attention on the other side of a large space. I was able to yell my way into mixed voice on my way to work one day after having lots of trouble finding it.

THIS VIDEO is INCREDIBLE - keeping in mind, it is difficult to try and. help three different challenges get to the same goal. I found I had chest... and I had head voice, but I definitely did NOT have a mix. WISH I HAD THIS VIDEO YEARS AGO! I was shocked when I got to mixed voice so late in life and it make me a better singer and more comfortable in the higher and even "sweet" spot. Instead of trying to pigeon holing yourself into one of these three, just pick a song you know... and follow what she says for each. I am no expert but in this video she clearly talks about VOCAL FRY (3:09) and NYAH NYAH NYAH (8:50)and "super New York: bratty"nyah" - - - and finally her mention of modifying to a bright American "aah" (like cat) not "ahh" (as in yawn). At 15:29 she gets clear about this.... and LOVE how she gradually shifts into additional crying or whining (16:05) . With your headvoice, her exercise will force your resonance forward like with the NYAH... but if you Start with Vocal FRY, go into NYAH NYAH, - EXPECIALLY in Your HEAD VOICE... it will brighten it more (shifting from hooty). If you say, "I think I sound nasally, you are doing it properly!!! Record yourself doing these... and maybe pick a few different songs that are in this space for your voice. Pick whichever song and do each of what Gemma suggests. She even mentions "imitation" (2:55) and so maybe pick a CHARACTER you can imitate when they talk... and use their voice for singing... alternatively, just find a singer that does it overboard, like Stevie Wonder (Cry) - Brittany Spears (Vocal Fry) ... I am sure you have sung along with someone on the radio and found something really sounded good! I know that was more than you asked for... but I it is killing me that I (last to the singer table) found my mix and people are still struggling finding theirs. Gemma has mastered this, as well as, taught enough people who are struggling to find their mix. This is articulated so well in the video. Hope some of these thoughts helped! All the best out there!😃😉

You can still get into mix quietly though and in fact if you are doing it healthily you shouldn't rely on being loud. Her first tip about vocal fry explains this. If you gently fry up and down, you can find mix quietly.

SO SO GOOD! 😭 First time ever hearing a CONVINCING opera flipper. Most times people demonstrate it sounding old and hooty when it’s actually a lovely production, just not the style I’m going for. You nailed the “pseudo contemporary” sound I’ve been wanting to develop out of! And also recognizing the power we have on top! Would love a vid - even a short for how to build the bridge for flippers.

You sound amazing, no matter which style, but you operatic sound is absolutely gorgeous! Such a beautiful timbre 😍 I guess I'd put myself into the 3rd category since I have an operistic background and still do sing classic nowdays, but depending on the repertoire or specific part in a song, I can relate to type 1 and 2 as well.

Yes!! I used to call that opera approach, “church woman” because I (was) sang in very traditional capacities before I moved to more contemporary worship. Nothing wrong with it - it just didn’t always fit the artistic arrangement. I sang pop & traditional country too and that twang was very spot on as to how my vocal coach worked with me to move beyond the “opera flipping” to contemporary almost belting but was really more mix-y; just with a more “eh” sound than “ah” on mainly the money notes that had “I”. She often had me up there mimicking Celine and Carrie - those styles helped me connect the dots (more “eh”) but I also LUV your explanations!! 👍🏻👏🏻 ~ Karah

i’m very much a flipper, and i’ve been doing the type of exercising you describe for about half a year and it did help to a degree, but i still can reach much higher notes in plain “operatic” voice than in this complain-ey more contemporary sounding one((
@LI0NS0N
@LI0NS0N Жыл бұрын
I think that's normal. I come from a classical background and have a broadway vocal coach now. So for one, as you go high with the classical technique, you carry less weight, you're in more of a head voice than a mix voice so going higher is easier by default. Note that musical theatre and pop sopranos usually belt most of their big notes in the upper 4th and lower 5th octave, while operatic sopranos go quite a bit higher for their really big notes. It's just a natural consequence of the weight involved. Now, the trick to going higher without flipping is to learn how to navigate the balance and sort of gradually shift from the bright vowels to more dull, open ones but without losing the resonance in front either. For me it feels like the resonance is expanding both ways as I go up, both front and back, which keeps it from going to that classical space. Maybe that helps a little? Definitely try to find a vocal coach who's experienced in that particular style shift, It's really hard to figure all of this out by yourself or with someone who doesn't understand what's happening in your throat.

My immediate thought is that as we go higher we can't hold on to that big sound that Gemma showed with the AE-exercise. We need to find a "smaller" sound (meaning thinner vocal chords) while still having an open mouth and a more contemporary sound. Try meowing like a cute kitten or crying like a sea gull on the high notes and you will notice that you don't sound classical but still are able to sing really high. Experiment a bit and and see how you can find a sound that both feels and sounds great :)

I am really gonna cry.... It is the first time I finally heard in a song my mixed voice because of your tips!! I categorized myself in Heavy Chesty Pressed Singer and tried your tip for trying the melody with an "mm" vocal fry in a song. OMG... Finally I am relaxed in my mix area when I sing the relevant lyric.... Funny thing is the following: 1. I try a lyric in a song first with "mm" vocal fry then I sing that lyric and it sounds relaxed and beautifully!!! If I try to sing the second lyric immediately without first trying the "mm" vocal fry I feel and I hear immediately all things that I am doing wrong!!! An "mm" vocal fry fixes it afterwards!!! Thank you so much!!!!

I laughed so hard on the vowels for the operatic flipper. We're ripe for development, but untamed, hence the word "fruity". When Valley girls sound like Snow White and also at the same time, a squirrel, and nasality overcomes the NAWWWWWH. *Sigh* Love your voice and your suggestions though.

I don’t know if this is proper at all, but one of my favorite ways of getting into mix is just sliding up to head voice and adding pressure on top of it, if that makes sense…? I’ve found that I can get into a mix pretty quickly doing this on open vowels and then slowly bringing that down into chest. I’ve got a ton of singing on my channel in various ranges. Not sure if I’m doing it right, but I enjoy singing around my range quite a bit!

why am I both of 1&2 lol🥲I strain heaps in chest voice the closer I get to passagio but as soon as it reaches it I flip into falsetto and I struggle to have efficient vocal fold closure. I've been practicing mix on ng and gug and practicing at a really low volume has helped. I've also been trying to eliminate the tension also causing the straining and flipping and I've been struggling. Would you recommend both exercises for me?

Been working as a professional pub entertainer since 1973. Ive found from my own experience, that if chest voice is all you have then thats all youre gonna get. I have chest voice and some falsetto and thats it. Been thru all sorts of vocal programs over the years and have found that you cant make a slik purse out of a pigs ear. Some people can do this and others like me cant. Your mileage may vary. Im retired now. Happy to see the younger folk plying the trade.

I am one of the 3 types- trained operatic singer. My head voice coordination is VERY wired into my muscle memory, and it seems no amount of tips and tricks and studying the science can get them to coordinate differently past my break. I've scoured the web and there are very few teachers who seem like they understand the degree of training that goes into crafting the classical voice AND teach contemporary pop styles, but you are one of them! It looks like you aren't accepting 1:1 voice students at this time, can you refer anyone with success in teaching opera singers to mix? thanks!
