There has been a German-American community in the NYC area for a very long time. One of their iconic restaurants was a place called "LUCHOWS" in Manhattan,(long since gone) which served great traditional German dishes. Definitely NOT your thing but one of its "special events", I remember around Christmas time, was their annual venison "orgy" where their customers could bring in their own venison and have it prepared by their chefs for the huge banquet which followed . It was what it was.....

Fruehlingsquark - I missed that too, then made my own. Get the zero fat quark, add some whipping cream to make it smoother, loads of chives, parsley and dill. Then Kraeutersalz and pepper and that's the whole deal. I like it with a baked potato and butter - tastes just like the real thing.

Have you ever visited Birmingham’s “German Christmas markets”? They do a lot of the foods mentioned in this video 😊 Would be interested to know if they taste the same as in Germany!

I have not. I went to Winter Wonderland in London many moons ago (2012 I believe) and they had a lot of German stuff as well. Was too poor to have anything though :D

Was in Birmingham recently (originally come from there) and visited the Weinachtsmärkte there, this time with a different eye (live since about a decade in Germany). „lobenswert“: they transport the huts directly from Frankfurt… and it's imo possibly the best in Britain (haven't visited Manchester over Christmas but). Was quite lively, and a good atmosphere. „minuspunkte“: its Brum and tbh a bit tacky 😅. Deffo not the same as in Germany. The atmosphere is markedly different. In Germany you can really *smell* the Christmas market. And the markets aren't all concentrated in one place, but strewn throughout the town (wherever you happen to live in Germany), and each part of that town adds its own speciality. They also add the specialities of the region, so you get a feeling of the entire country coming together due to the various things from Thüringen, Bayern, Erzgebirge, _etc._ _etc._ And you get various different ‘tastes’ of neighbouring Europe-there are the famous Finnish parts (with their rustic style, tents, stacks of smoked salmon, etc.), Hungarian specialities, the Tiroler, the French, _etc._ In my town we also have Mittelaltermarkt (middle ages market), where they bake dough in stone ovens with garlic, cheese, ham… and… modern curry chicken (lol).

Am actually surprised Curry Ketchup and currywurst Sauce has not caught on in the UK in major supermarkets, given the online demand and from people visiting the German Deli. Quite like mild versions personally.

Same here, I'm not a huge fan of German food and 90% of the foods I miss when I think of Germany are actually Turkish, Greek or Italian. However, I've always liked Kartoffelklöße. Strangely enough I never wanted any sauce or gravy with them, just plain Kartoffelklöße. The only German thing I really miss is a proper bakery, with different rolls and different breads (like 5-Korn-Quarkbrot, Dinkelbrötchen usw.) and Teilchen (Puddingbrezel 😍). Perhaps there is something like that in London? I haven't seen a proper bakery in the Midlands yet, Lidl is probably the closest thing.

I remember Lingonberries from Taskmaster, the Swedish guy they had on liked them. Never seen them in person yet. Currywurst did always seem like a fayre/seaside thing to me, or Christmas markets. My fav fayre food are those little doughnuts that are basically 90% oil and 10% sugar.

Also interested in delving into higher alcoholic versions of sweet Malt Beer (closer to 2.5% ABV) or Malzbier, aside from the Danish non-alcoholic Supermalt common in the UK unless the stronger sweet Malzbier / Malt Beer ~2.5 ABV is more of a Scandinavian thing.
@JenDre
@JenDre 3 жыл бұрын
Hm don't really remember that being a thing. Only know Vitamalz which is alcohol free. Also called Kinderbier 🤣
@wickiezulu
@wickiezulu 3 жыл бұрын
@@JenDre Understand. The English wiki page for Malt Beer mentions the likes of Icelandic versions such as Egils Maltextrakt (1.2% ABV) and one or two others with a bit more alcohol content (particularly during winter holidays), which peaked my interest yet seems to have been discontinued a while ago.

All the ex-forces people who were stationed in Germany are addicted to Currywurst and curry sauces from Germany.

As someone who owns a condiment company I am actually v tempted to try and make a curry-esque sauce. Like the kind that Hela makes - curry ketchup. just less gloopy. Not a fan of that texture.

Currywurst was created by an enterprising German lady who made friends with British soldiers who were stationed there just after the war ended. The British soldiers supplied her with curry powder and she started a business supplying currywurst to the British forces and to the locals.
