Since the dawn of the science of warfare, when the battle became more than two groups simply slogging it out until one is annihilated, armies have long recognised the importance of capturing the high ground. Achieving this aim affords commanders the ability to oversee and dominate the surrounding land as well as provide a more advantageous position for defence against an oncoming attack.
In the 20th century, the high ground was higher than ever before as mankind began to master the art of powered flight. A significant chapter in the story of modern warfare in the 20th century is one of how the airplane went from rather humble beginnings as something of a curiosity or even a fad to a true necessity of waging a successful war. Trillions upon trillions of dollars were spent and continue to be spent to produce the most sophisticated aircraft the world has ever seen in order to dominate the enemy through the use of air power.
However, part of the use of air power is to deny the enemy the use of their own combat aviation assets. This is the realm of the air superiority fighter; warplanes whose sole purpose is to clear the skies of opposing aircraft so that friendly aircraft can go about their business of conducting reconnaissance, carrying out transport tasks and of course obliterating the enemy on the ground with bombing. Like many a weapon of the 20th century and beyond, the air superiority fighter was birthed in the arena of World War I and in the skies over the mud and blood of the trenches.
In this episode, we are going to examine some of the early experiments in air combat in the conflict’s earliest days and how these evolved until finally the Germans were able to achieve - for the first time in history - air supremacy over the Allies. This is the story of the Fokker Scourge and the first battle for air supremacy.

My grandfather was there. He had really interesting stories of just waving at the Germans at first, circling each other and admiring the other’s aircraft. The people piloting were after all “gentlemen” and the war was only on the ground. Commander soon took positions against such friendliness and the pilots would first bring a rock with them. The goal was was to maneuver over your adversary and drop the rock through the structure and make him go home. This quickly escalated to hand guns then mounted guns. He was a barn stormer after the war, then flew the mail then contracting to the US government to do aerial mapping, which made him valuable to do reconnaissance again in WWII. He did recon in North Africa, over “the hump” into Burma, worked his way up the Marianas islands with the troops. He did a very low bomb assessment at Hiroshima, then his team filmed the armistice on the Missouri. This video seems to be the WIKI version and skips so much as where the fist mounted guns did so with simple wedges mounted on the aft side of the propeller arch where the bullets might strike the propeller.

The Storm Shadow is a small jet with a computer brain. It's radar signature is a fraction of a human crewed jet, even the stealth f35. These are routinely shot down. If a drone only slightly bigger than the bomb it carries is vulnerable to SAM, what chance does a bomber or even a ground attack crewed aircraft have? The days of massed bomber raids are over.

It is a common misconception that "The Red Baron", Manfred Von Richthofen mainly used the Fokker Dr.1 Triplane. Only 20 of his 80 victories were using the Dr.1. By far the most were whilst piloting the Albatros DII in late 1916/early 1917. The only reason the Dr.1 is so strongly associated with Richthofen is because he was killed in it.

When were forward firing guns first put on the wings as used in WW-II?
@Agent_3141
@Agent_3141 5 ай бұрын
Because WWI airplanes were made of cloth and wood, so they wouldn't be able to handle heavy machine guns. Also the machine guns were known to jam, so the pilot needed easy access to it

It is amazing how fast technology can change just for the fact that we want to kill one another in a more efficient way. The airplane is one of those inventions that went from humble beginnings where distance flown was measured by feet. Just around 10 years after the first successful flight all of the wright brothers human beings were advancing their technology to kill one another. There's a lot of different things that war has made technology advanced faster than it would have if it was not to be used to kill one another. When the first true machine gun was ever made by Hiram Maxim in 1884 he was told that he would be able to make a fortune by taking his invention to Europe. It was sad that the Europeans would buy anything to help kill one another quicker and more efficiently. Look at the engines we have in our cars today. If it wasn't for armies wanting and needing bigger and better motors it would have taken a lot longer to be where we are at today. Advancements in medicine had made great strides during wars across the world. Doctors were able to try different things since there were so many men dying that even if their experiment did not work they could go back and try a different method. I absolutely love history. This KZfaq channel is one of my more favorite ones. I remember when I was young asking my history teacher why do we have to learn about things in the past? He told me if you don't learn from your past you are more than likely to repeat the mistakes. That was over 50 years ago and I still remember the man who told me this and I completely understood what he meant.
