I just left Naknek Alaska and have landed in Anchorage. Next, I need to find a job in Cordova where I hope to work on a salmon boat.
It is a nervous time. I don't have much money to use, Planes and gear are expensive and I'm running on my last few dollars. I expect to be homeless in a fishing village in Cordova until I can find a job on a boat. I hope to find one quickly, but there is a lot to do in Anchorage before we go.
Check out my Instagram to see photos from Naknek and blogs about the place and the people.

soup kitchens and go to where most of the safer looking homeless gather and see if you can make friends, help each other, etc. avoid run aways and look for some of the old timers.

also, apply for services, like food stamps, then you'll be actively enrolled in their system and if pressed in a very dire situation the immediate availability of help can happen more successfully. You're brave and talented and strong, now be wise and have good time.

@@Buprestidae2017 your advice is spot on. Not to give too many spoilers, but... I actually ended up in a place called Hippie Cove in Cordova, it was a place where homeless people congregated and made a small community. I ended up getting food from a food pantry for a while so I could eat while I walked the docks. I also learned to forage a lot of ingredients to beef up my meals. I'll have more video about it coming up in the future. I've got some other videos coming out soon to teach the noobies a bit about what they need to know if they are trying to work on a boat ;) when you see them please share more of your insights in the comments. It's always good having you here

@@RTLivingFree I was in Cordova (ocean beauty) three times, one of my dearest memories is hiking up where the ski slopes are in the summer. Watch out for the weather as you might already know. I've heard of summers that were depressing and poor health resulting. I left ocean beauty because i was one of the 10 or 12 employees who were white, the other 300 were all mexican and hired by the same guy, kind of a mafia boss wana be. Ferry's come thru cordova and you can consider more possible docks...Cordova's docks really are some of the most beautiful i've ever encountered; sea lions, bald eagles arctic ravens, various types of seagulls sea planes and interesting locals. Ever think of getting into Quality Control? nicer to work with people working with each other rather than the risk of a drunk/dumb captain and fighting crew.

@@Buprestidae2017 Haha you are right about the weather in Cordova, and yeah, you're also right about Ocean Beauty being mostly staffed by people from Mexico too I have thought of quality control, I am good with working with people and I can read and write well so I think I'd do well in it. Luckily though I did get on with a boat, a seiner called The Rafferty with Captain Rod Jensen. He's an honorable man, he treats his crew well and he is a great fisherman. I honestly could not have asked for better luck in getting on his boat. I'm going back this year! THERES SUPPOSED TO BE 2X THE SALMON COMING THIS YEAR I am so glad I already have a spot on a boat. I'm hyped to bust my ass for this summer. I'm gonna stack net like a motherfucker

@@RTLivingFree Do both, work on the fishing boat and see if you can find out more about the quality control jobs, the old pitfall of being a fisherman is when you get back everyone expects you've made a lot of money. Quality control and they'll think if you made any money you'd probably put it in the bank. Ha! Glad the captain is a good guy, should be fun.

Thank you my friend! Hate to leave you on a cliff hanger here, BUT there's going to be some cool videos coming that are less like "stories" and more like tutorials and lessons about things you need to know about fishing in Alaska! I'll be picking up the story again soon but likely after this next salmon season! I've got to run off to Alaska again for more work this summer, But I won't leave you high and dry with no videos while I'm away ;)

Now why don't all of those do-gooder "we are going to get rid of homelessness (pukes)" spend their time helping people who are TRYING to help themselves instead of boo hooing over the drunks and drug addicts who CHOOSE to live homeless? Throw them in jail and set up programs and time and money and meals to give people who ARE WORKING such as THIS MAN a helping hand! Salute!

I’m glad you reached out, there’s actually a lot of jobs you can work that will provide you room and board. Sport fishing guide boats, commercial fishing tenders, salmon hatcheries, canneries, outdoor guides, and many other jobs offer a free bunk and often free food. Unless you want the experience of living without common necessities you definitely don’t need to become homeless to relocate. Things like tenders and fishing vessels is hard to get in on unless you find a job by walking the docks, so you’ll need to spend a few days or weeks in the woods, But right now, you can get a job in a hatchery and they will provide you a bed, food, and money. This is the time of year they need help the most so now is the time to land that job quickly

Have you tried processing boats that’s what I did after working the cannery
@RTLivingFree
@RTLivingFree 5 жыл бұрын
I have not worked on a processing boat, but I hear it's good money. I decided to pursue a job on a fishing boat because I'd been told you typically make more money as a deckhand making a crewshare. Getting an hourly wage is good, but your hours arent guaranteed, so you take the same risk as a deckhand does, but get compensated less. I definitely see the appeal of working on a processing boat. It's nice having a larger crew, the same guy/guys can get old after a while if you don't like them

What an adventure 👍👍👍subscribed What's the weather like?is money taxed/ 1099c/paid by hand....Intel please
@RTLivingFree
@RTLivingFree 5 жыл бұрын
Glad you're on board! and all quality questions too! So, the weather by the coasts is pretty rainy, It's more or less like a deciduous rainforest over there, its definitely a cooler summer compared to the "Lower 48" states. I never minded the weather though, The way you get paid will be different from boat to boat, but typically a captain wil report that you were a contractor they paid for work during the year so you will need to do your 1099 come the end of the tax year. There is a lot you can write off including travel expenses, food expenses, and gear expenses. Often your pay will come mostly all at once, but your captain will give you cash advances while you're working so you have money for all the necessities you will need covered while you're in town and to take care of any debts you still need to pay off while you work! Some captains will give you your cash advance unprompted, others you will need to ask for it from, even then it is not guaranteed they will give it to you. You sound like a person who's trying to go fishing ;) What do you think about it so far?

It amazes me how many people walk around this earth with no gun with them to protect themselves what whatever this earth has to offer as a possible danger or threat I would never go to Alaska without a gun and it would be with every where o go from walking to the store to brushing my teeth. Have you heard of bears? They live in Alaska guns are probably the most effective tool to protect yourself against them. O yeah…Wolves!¿….
