Take a room tour at the South Pole!! Living and working at the South Pole is an incredibly unique experience, and the housing situation is definitely no different. There are two different room sizes spread out over three different housing wings, and within them, people do everything from fully decorate them to nothing at all. Watch this video to check out how I have my room set up! 🙌🏠

I am currently living and working at the South Pole Station through the United States Antarctic Program. I am not down here as a filmmaker or photographer, but instead work in the Logistics and Supply department. All of these videos are being made during my free time and not during working hours. We are very busy down here keeping the station running at maximum efficiency, but I have managed to find some free time to make these short movies!

Man you make me both jealous and annoyed that I didn't make an effort to try to do amazing stuff like this in the future (not like I could have made if it I tried anyway lol) and I'm so thankful that you can give us a glimpse into this world. I'm now a subscriber

Loved watching all of your South Pole Station videos. I just applied for a summer position at SP and answered a questionnaire from PAE, which will hopefully lead to an interview. Nice to see what I can expect living there for 4-5 months should I get hired.

Cool video. When you take a job at an Antarctic station, how much personal gear/belongings are you allowed to bring a long? This video seems to show that you have a lot you can bring.

I know that Crux the Southern cross and Centaurus can be seen but what other constellations can be seen. I live in the Northern Hemisphere and we only see Corvus and Crater along with Hydra the water snake.

Great video as always Viktor. Considering you location, I think the room size is just about right. I noticed that one of the walls was covered with tapestry. Is there a window behind it? And where do you go for showers and stuff?

Thank you so much!! And yeah, it’s pretty good! Though I do think the other two wings are a little bit small. Haha. But there is no window! I have an inside room. There are rooms on the outside with windows, but they get colder so I like the inside. Also keeps it dark during the months the sun is up. And right outside of each dorm area there is a bathroom with showers and such as well! 😊

You forgot the talk about the space heater. I guess it is not as hot in there as in most hotel rooms :) No possibility to open up a window, but any aircraft vents in there?

How warm (temperature) is your room approx? And can you sense the cold air at night? And when there is a storm outside, can you hear it in your room?

You have a little thermostat so you can set it! But most people keep it at regular room temp. But the station is cooler sometimes than other! If you have a window room you can hear storms but not on the inside like I was!

I'm getting ready to head down to McMurdo for the Summer season. any advice on what to bring/not bring? Also, does anyone play magic the gathering down there?

Amazing!! It’ll be an interesting season this year, but you’re gonna love it! But honestly it depends on what you’re into! I mean make sure you have the clothes you need to be outside, but then just bring the stuff you like to do. Also, grab some freshies, or maybe some nice whiskey or something on your way down so you can have that when you need it 🙌 And I honestly don’t know about Magic! All kinds of interests down there though, so I wouldn’t be surprised!

@@GoneVenturing Definitely going to pick up my fav whisky before heading down. Will they let you bring fresh fruit/veggies bought in New Zealand to McMurdo and SP?

Nate Good! There is a really great store in Christchurch literally called Whiskey Galore! And yeah, you can bring freshies down. However, in regards to both of those things, I would just be aware that there is a chance you won’t be able to do any of it. Depending on what the COVID restrictions are before summer deployment, you might get stuck in quarantine for two weeks and then get sent straight to the ice. But it’s unsure now. Either way, maybe get the whiskey at home if you can!

0:25 - ir is not a nice place to do anything except sleeping.... U can use big mirror on the wall to make room feel more spacy... Or it is better to install japanese cell beds. 6:30 - why there is no windows??

Questions: 1) What were you looking for during your room inspections? 2) Is there a limit to how much electrical power you can use per room? Do they prohibit certain appliances (space heaters, cooking equipment, etc?) 3) Anyone ever grow marijuana in the greenhouse over winter? Seems like a good way to pass the time. 4) Anyone ever lift up the ceiling tiles to spy on their neighbors room?

There is actually more room in a prison cell, still nice little spaces, cozy! :)

Also, unlike a prison cell, he can leave any time he wants and go to the bathroom / sauna / library / kitchen / etc

There are actually laws and particularly phycological/physical considerations regarding the size of prison cells across most of the civilized world because of those exact reasons. Gotta have room to stretch the legs and the ability to be around others in some capacity. All we ever really need is a cozy, secluded place to lay our heads and our things and the ability to be fit both in mind and body. I think he demonstrates this perfectly and in balance with this channel. Great comment, hope your doing well on this fall day (northern hemisphere anyway). :)
