House of the Dragon has finally ended. During it's on-season I re-watched every episode of Game of Thrones first season simultaneously in hopes to compare the two fantastic series. After much speculation I've come to my final thoughts on the sister shows. In this video I talk about Why Game of Thrones Season 1 Is BETTER Than House of the Dragon first season. They're both really good shows but GOT easily comes out on top. Watch to find out why.

All the greens (except Cole) coped with the role perfectly. Actors of Aegon, Aemond, Alicent and Otto also deserve a lot of praise, I hope the writers in the second season use their skills, which I see with my eyes closed. The best acting scenes in the season were given by the actor of Viserys . He was gorgeous. Plus, the writers gave this actor a lot of scenes where he demonstrated his skills. So he had an advantage over the rest of the cast

GOT 1-4 will always be superior. The writers weren't biased towards one side to make the others look good. They didn't have remove some of foolish actions of the Starks to make them look the good guys. Robb, ned, jon,Sansa, Arya, catleyn and other houses made mistakes and they paid the price. While the Lannisters were the more wrong one but still they were written in such a better way with so much depth. We all still love cersie and even tywin despite being a horrible person is still such a pleasure to watch. In HOTD, there is a clear bias. They have changed things too much to make the blacks the protagonist of the show ( laenor and vaemond's death)and the greens, some evil villans. It's just that despite their efforts, the greens are just far more interesting characters to watch. Alicent and her arc is far superior to rhaneyra. Rhaneyra didn't do anything this season. She didn't have any kind of arc. She is just there. Alicent is far more compelling character. Even aemond and haelna. I wish they didn't make aegon a rapist and make him pure evil to make rhaneyra and her claim look better with the viewers but he is and I draw a line there. It's clear, GOT wasn't biased, which HOTD is clearly towards the blacks.

@@akivaplutno i disagree with your comments on how they tried to make both sides look bad when rhaneyra is cleary made to look like a girl boss feminist. Look at her dialogues. Daemon's wrong actions are too shown in a positive light. Her husband died in the books and she and daemon were speculated to have a hand in it but the show took that grey area away by keeping him alive. Rhaneyra killed vaemond in the books. She ordered him to be killed but in the show daemon kills him and the reason is him defending rhaneyra being called a whore. Rhaneyra's complexities are stripped away to make her a hero in the story when clearly there is no hero. They all are bad people who just want more power. In GOT, it was more clear that who the good guys were and who the bad guys but still the villians, specially the Lannisters were so fleshed out. Although I love how they have handled show alicent but I can't say that for the rest of the greens. Aegon is made a rapist when it was a rumor in the books spread by mushroom. So who in the right mind would support aegon over rhaneyra. Even young rhaneyra had some depth. I don't find that in adult rhaneyra. And alicient is the most complex character in the show. She is the victim of her circumstances and still has taken the wrong route. This is what makes her so complex. A victim but still a wrongdoer. Her anger, her frustration are justified for the kind of life she had. Yes she takes a wrong turn with it but that's whats interesting about her. Show Rhaneyra just doesn't have that. They have removed all her negetive characterstics to make her the hero of the show.

@@akivaplutno also her being the heir doesn't mean she did anything this season. Shit happened around her. That's it. As far as main protagonist go, show adult rhaneyra is pretty boring because she doesn't have an arc. Even young rhaneyra had better arc.

season 1 of GoT will always be miles ahead of HoTD for lots of reasons: here's mine. 1) every character., extra and supporting especially, played an important part in its plot or spiced up the atmosphere and you didnt need a big cgi-dragon budget to make your show interesting. poor looking children = vary's spies. prostitutes = little finger's spies. pycell and any lannister or money grubber = cersei's spy. youll remember shaga son of dolf and leader of the stone crows more than any character in HoTD. house lannister has control of both Cleganes: Sandor and Gregor. 2) also it had seasoned actors/actresses such as Sean Bean, Lena Heady, James Cosmo, Ian Glenn. 3) is a rich story put on to television that gets better with every rewatch because it does capitalize on the word "rich story telling". Robb Stark's campaign has many factors for why he lost besides "he broke his vow". a highly regarded show like breaking bad will never come close to the complexity of game of throne's story telling(if you disregard the last 5 seasons of GoT and focus on seasons 1 -> 4).

Good take! Obviously I love both GOT and HOTD, but HOTD missed the mark slightly IMO even considering the budgetary advantages the show had over GOT Initially. I think there were some character development decisions where Ryan Condal and the gang missed the mark. Particularly with their writing of Daemon, GRRM has stated that Daemon is his favorite Targaryen and that he’s the closest truly Grey character perhaps in the entire ASOIAF universe. I think Daemon’s writing should have been more along scope of Tyrion’s progression in seasons 1-4, instead HOTD gave us the equivalent of Tyrion season 5-8. Despite my feeling towards Daemon writing, I think Matt Smith crushed the role and he’s firmly the Rogue Prince in my mind. Also I think Paddy’s portrayal of King Viserys was spot on as well. Paddy in ep. 8 and Matt in ep. 3 were probably the best acted and most dynamic moments we saw throughout the entire season. I would truly rank those as high point scenes as good as anything we saw in GOT season 1. Ultimately GRRM’s suggested 12 episode adaptation for season 1 was turned down by HBO. I believe with two added eps. Condal and the gang could have given us a better opportunities for character development and more story lines that didn’t make it into Season 1. Especially more time with the children from both camps and the rivalry and enmity between the factions. As well as Daemon and Leana’s relationship and their time in Essos. Also more time with Olivia Cooke and Emma D’arcy as older Alicent and Rhaenyra would’ve been a plus as well. On a final thought I think the cast for every character in HOTD was superb.

I only agree with the dialogues, in the first four seasons the dialogues are better than in the first season of the house of the dragon, but that's because it's all written in the book. In seasons 5-8, the dialogues are 5 times worse than in the house of the dragon, which suggests that the writers in the house of the dragon are much better, because they managed to create high-quality dialogues without a book. I can argue or agree with two more of your opinions. But what I definitely can't agree with is casting. I'm sorry, but the actors in the HOTD are as much better as possible. Acting in Game of Thrones has always been a bad example, the actors went out only on cool dialogues. The only actors who have never been questioned in Game of Thrones are those who played (Tywin, Tyrion, Ned, Robert, Catelyn) These people did a perfect job, there are small questions for the rest, and 2-3 more people to whom I have big questions. I won't name them.

All good points! However when people praise Peter Dinklage’s while excluding Lena Headey it makes my brain hurt. Lol Charles Dance(Tywin) and Lena Headey(Cersei) absolutely made game of thrones what it was. With a topping of Michelle Fairley(catelyn stark) In my opinion. Also Game of Thrones came in with tons of new & inexperienced actors and actresses, as kids with primary speaking roles and the series was still critically acclaimed. I also think it’s important to note that Game of Thrones set the bar for HOTD it many ways more than one.(as it did for television as a whole) And being that the material in Fire and blood is extremely vague, I just feel as if they could have leaned on stronger seasoned actors. I’m sorry but Matt Smith and Emma DArcy are extremely mediocre to be lead roles. Definitely get all of your reasonings though and respect them . Thanks for tuning in. Appreciate you !

I feel this comparison is a tad unfair as the source material of AGOT is far superior to Fire & Blood, since obviously AGOT is Martin's magnum opus. Plus given the time and moment, the first season of GoT changed how we view television forever. Nothing is gonna live up to that. However, there are certain things that HoTD did do better, especially the attention to details and medieval realism, which was visible from everywhere from the Viserys hunting scene to the details in the coup and the Aegon coronation ceremony. It was a lot less "we have a new king now" and a lot more "this is how it happens". The casting and the acting I would say was also on par with GoT. But overall I don't think there's much to debate. HoTD Season 1 was good. It was very good. GoT Season 1 was a once in a lifetime season.

Oh know you’re spot on man! As well as I state a lot of the points you’re mentioning in the video. They both were really good first season representations without a doubt. And anyone who denies that is a MAD man. But literally all Gots first season had one source material. Nothing else. No budget, No Audience, No crazy CGI, nothing but source material and acting ..and as you stated it still changed television history. That’s just insane to me . And that’s why I feel it comes out on top But trust me, as I have watch HOTD entirely at least 5 times …I’m not complaining! 😂 I love them both . Enjoying your comments man! Happy holidays!

I have an acting education myself, so I can judge them. At the HOTD , I have questions for two . Mysaria has a bad accent, the actress can't cope with it. The actor who plays Criston Cole is wooden and has 3 facial expressions . Everyone else copes with the role perfectly . Emma Darcy has a lot of skills with a face, it's noticeable from a mile away, but by the way, I have small questions for the writers who forced the adult Rhaenyra to walk with the same mood all episodes, I hope this will be fixed in the second season. (Emma Darcy has 10 times more skills than an actress for Dany from Game of Thrones, this can be said right now )Matt Smith is gorgeous, his Daemon is multifaceted as much as it matters. In my opinion, he slightly overplayed the scene on the bridge in episode 10, but otherwise I would say that he conveyed the сharacter. almost the best of all. Young Rhaenyra is a future star. I saw this actress in another series, she has an incredible range of emotions.
