This is part 3 of my entry into the Great Guitar Build Off 2021 Scratch Build competition.
In this episode I make a start on the body. Routing out the neck pocket and control cavities before getting back to the CNC to create the back covers.

I'm fed up with Les Paul-style builds but happy to give you a free pass. Enjoying the build. One thing though: spalting is mould. Make sure you wear a mask. Not good for the lungs.

Hopefully I have put enough of my own spin on the LP shape with this one that you don’t feel it’s a direct LP guitar. I do have other shapes planned but I am making small changes as I progress. Thanks for mentioning about spalting . I am aware and do take various safety precautions around it.

Really great stuff man! I think the fit and finish those back covers is awesome, I wouldn’t blame you at all for using the CNC. I have built a CNC for building guitars, normally I’ve done them with other tools, and I started working on designs. Is there a location or place where you can get some bade templates Files especially for the fret boards, you know, a place to start? Thanks a lot, James

Thanks James. The cnc certainly has a place in my workshop. It won’t be used for everything but it will be used where I think best. As for templates, I made my own so not sure. You probably can get them. Joining some of the Facebook groups and asking would probably be your best bet

Plodding on nicely....... Love the wood for the covers. The contrast in the wood is great. Two quick questions..... Will your finish have the the same tonal or colour contrasts? second...How much more wood do you have just laying around the garden. Take care. Ok not just two questions. If guitar building at present is not a full time job, what do you do? Secondly. Where is your workshop and can we have a guided tour in one of your videos? This build, as with last is very LP'ish shaped. What other guitars are you building or designing?

Thanks! Glad you like it. I’m still not fully decided on how I’m going to finish the body but I do have a main idea. Lol wood lying around the garden is not an issue. In fact I have a bit too much. Most of it though is not good and will likely end up just being burnt. I’m based in Northamptonshire UK. I did do a workshop tour a few years ago when I built the workshop. It’s changed a bit since then though. I’m actually going to be moving house this year so will end up in a new workshop. I think I’ll do a goodbye video tour before I do. As for shapes, I have loads of other ideas. I’m drawing them out on the computer but before I go any further I want to make sure this design works. I’ve designed it fully on the computer and made the templates with my cnc for it. With the move this is likely going to be the last build video for a while but I will continue with my designs and when I’m back you will see something different.

Thanks for the feedback. I'm in Plymouth..... The one by the coast in Devon. I've got family in Kettering and Market Harborough so know some of your home country. Take care. I'll keep watching. I retire at the end of the year and although I've been playing with Cigar(ish) Box Guitars and reconditioning cheap guitars I get from Facebook, a goal is to build a guitar. I used to play percussion and hand drums in the late 60s, so world like to integrate the two interests in one build. Take care.

John this might be a stupid question but why didnt you use the CNC to do the routing on the back same as the covers???
@JohnClothier
@JohnClothier 3 жыл бұрын
Hey. Good question. The reason is complex but I’ll try and answer simply. To me the cnc is there for 3 things. Either to make things more accurately than I can by hand or to make things quicker than I can by hand or lastly to make things safer than I can by hand. The covers fall under both the more accurate and in the case of the switch cover more safer categories. The routing of the body cavities I can do safely and quicker by hand. So that leaves accuracy. Because I made a template with the cnc I can make it just as accurate by hand. As none of the cnc boxes are ticked I use my hand router. Does that make sense? I thought I’d create a q and a video soon so I’ll add this to the list and try and explain better then.

Here's a tip. If you don't already, start playing the instrument. You will make better guitars as a result.

@@JohnClothier Leo Fender didn't play either, and he made some of the best early electric guitars. I would say at least consult with players, either as you go along through a build, or after. The impressions of a skilled guitarist will help you refine the designs, and functionality, of the pieces you build, if you have any intention of making more.

That is very true. Luckily I have a friend who plays very well and he has been giving me some guidance. Thanks for the suggestion

Maybe less talk-talk and more build-build. Isn't the Great Guitar Build Off about the building of a great guitar rather tab conducting class?
