Neil shows a different setup to the D'Arce choke (from side mount) using what he commonly refers to as misdirection. The D'Arce choke is often used as a counter to the bottom person working an escape with the far arm underhook. Neil shows us how to attack using the near arm from a great side mount holding/control position.

I like how you stress downward pressure for the d'arce. I can't stress that enough. You get further smothering the arm, than squeezing with all your might.

The gym I train at right now has very few mid belts that train when I train (they mostly train mid week) so I'm either training with someone wayyy better than me (high level purple to black) or way worse (1-6 months white). I notice that I often end up in cradle as a transition. I can often catch the bicep and it stops them to let me think for a moment, but ultimately, with poor flexibility, I don't see a way to use it to improve my position. Specifically, this is cradle from behind, with my chest facing away. They can't lock their grip on me because of my shape and I have a very powerful deadlift, but if I pop my leg through, they just roll into side control. Any tips on how to handle being in the cradle in a way that is beneficial for the guy on bottom? I am loving the catch methods on the mats offensively, but since I'm a bigger guy and getting a little older now, I don't have the speed and mobility to do a lot of what I think could be effective for escaping.

Neil I have a question. I love this transition into darce. However, you saying to 'slap bicep to skin' and then just 'be heavy' doesn't work for me most of the time. I think this may only actually get a blood choke consistently if you have massive biceps and forearms (like yours). When I go this deep with my arm, I just end of cranking 99% of the time because my arm slides out a fraction during the transition, which sometimes gets the tap but isn't what I'm looking for. After much practice, I can get a blood choke with the 'rule of thumb' approach (shallow darce), every time. I've been working through the details of the darce for 3 months straight, and let me tell you there's been a whole lotta crankin' and not so much choking (I have a tough partner willing to go through this with me for the sake of learning it correctly). Overall, I feel that the shallow darce is the way to go for us skinny guys. Any thoughts on this? Again, I love the transition, it flows great with my 'go to' side control routine! EDIT: I was actually able to succeed in truly blood choking with the 'arm super deep' approach multiple times. I had to focus on keeping weight VERY heavy for the entire spin movement. If you let up even a tad, I lose arm placement and my choke arm slides out a fraction which kills the blood choke. So, end conclusion: great transition, but for my puny arms it's tough to be deep enough and keep weight just right to make this a true blood choke. My opp just squirms a bit and WAM, no choke all crank.
