Great work as always but for some more on the game's aesthetic: it's specifically a tribute to PRIDE Fight Championships, a mixed martial arts promotion that ran from 1997 until selling to UFC in 2007 after yakuza scandals and other issues. Gai Tendo is, as mentioned, a gigantic tribute to one of the biggest stars of Pride's history: Kazushi Sakuraba. His ascent to national hero status began after he locked Royler Gracie in a Kimura Lock at PRIDE 8, the first time a Gracie had fallen for that arm bar since Helio was caught by the move's inventor Masahiko Kimura in 1951. This kicked off an incredible feud with the entire family that culminated with moments such as him defeating Royce Gracie in a match that despite being a semi-final round in tournament was allowed to run with no time limit and went for 90 minutes. Sakuraba then fought like an hour later in his next round's match only for his body finally gave up for the night. Sakuraba would often describe his martial art as simply "Pro Wrestling". Against weaker opponents he manged to do crazy things like knock a guy out with a dropkick. He also once defeated an opponent with a full 20 pound weight advantage. It's frankly a miracle he can walk at all, let alone still work some pro wrestling matches in NOAH. A lot of sports fans like to talk about how their sport used to be better when they really just mean they want to be young again. For MMA there's a lot about the sport that genuinely was more exciting but with what we know now it would be grossly immoral to allow it to be run that way again.

My friend actually plays every fighting game this way. He didn’t grow up on controller from what I remember and moved with the arrow keys on keyboard. When I gave him my old stick he unscrewed the box to switch the horizontal and vertical directions of the stick so he could have the buttons on the left and stick on the right. I’ve seen him literally cross his hands at arcades so he can play the way he normally does. It’s a sight to behold

What I always found interesting is how the stick-based attacks is technically a throwback to the pre-Street Fighter era. Not just Karate Champ but many Commodore 64 fighting games used stick-based attacking. Usually by having you hold the singular Atari joystick button to shift between movement and attacking. But of course SF2 comes out and everyone completely abandons that. So it was cool to see SNK bring it back and evolve it. REALLY wanna play this sometime so fingers crossed we one day get some Hyper Neo Geo 64 releases. Especially because I hear good things about SamSho 64 but can barely remember playing it. I just know the PS1 game is a completely different game from the arcade one.

I do like how they made the Aikido and Judo characters play. You aren't supposed to just do a random technique in Aikido, you do gotta react to what your opponent does! While in Judo this is a bit different as you can blindly do a combination of throws and it may work, but that would be against not so skilled grapplers, a good Judoka will totally counter them or just shut down your attempt

Buriki ONE content, we thriving. I'm super glad to see something like this about the game. It's so cool and unique! It was a game that really dedicated itself to its aesthetic. A cool detail is that the old website maintains an illusion of a real event, with interviews with each character and so on.

Best Buriki One video I've seen, really went beyond by making accurate controllers! And I agree with what you said at the end. Seeing how SNK is always proud of their legacy titles and often make collections and ports, I've hoped SNK had ported the Hyper Neo Geo 64 games by now. I'm sure it's possible to play the game using the right analog for attacks on standard controllers in all main systems.
@carlosaugusto9821

The problem is that these games werent popular, unlike the 2d games, and the HNG64 was a big failure. So it's hard to expect a retro release these days.
@clawofthefallen
@clawofthefallen Жыл бұрын
@@carlosaugusto9821 many arcade games that weren't that popular still find their place on many collections, including SNK's own stuff like their NeoGeo X and NeoGeo Mini arcades. SNK sometimes are weird cuz they even ignore some popular stuff but were somewhat unique, like Samurai Shodown 6 and KoF NeoWave that were on Atomiswave and took a while to get their ports though they had a couple on PS2 and PS4 (SamSho 6 was also ported with considerable compromise on the PSP edition ot SamSho Anthology). I think it's more probable that SNK themselves have problems comming up with a software solution to port the Hyper NeoGeo 64 games more than anything else.

Thanks for this showcase, it was really cool to see this game running properly! It's a shame that out of all the HNG64 games, Buriki One is by far the least playable in MAME. Hopefully that changes in the near future. From what little tournament footage I've seen Ryo seems completely busted. Aside from a few of the strikers, most characters in this game seem to lack combos entirely, meanwhile Ryo can do this crazy 6 or 7-hit string that starts from a pretty fast attack and takes off like 40%. Maybe since it's a niche game most people, even the ones entering these tournaments, don't know how to play the rest of the cast, but most brackets I've seen had >50% Ryo players.

That's probably the Ryuko Ranbu?, i remember the Buriki version doing less hits than the traditional one due to each attack being a manual input, its also one of Ryo's supers in NGBC, which he appears as his Buriki One self, Mr Karate II
@Nhan6241
@Nhan6241 Жыл бұрын
@@tedjomuljono3052 It's 8 hits, but you actually only need to do around 4~6 hits since it would end safely if they block. I once read a Buriki ONE movelist thread and there's a guy said "Forget everything about Ryo, you only need to know how to do this move, it's worth more than everything else in his move list". He's definitely top tier in this game, though I think Rob Python and Ivan Sokolov could challenge him for the top 1 spot.

Wow kudos on creating your own Buriki One joysticks hahaha. One aspect I would have stressed on a bit more is the unique "center of gravity" gauge at the bottom of the screen. A really interesting idea for a realistic fighting game. Jacques is based on real life judoka David Douillet, by the way.

Excellent video, I've only really given time to Buriki One via the currently imperfect emulation and it does feel quite fun to play. Really would love a modern re-release. Your dedication to a. Getting a board, and b. making a controller to match the layout, is most appreciated. This was really good! An aside, Ivan and Xuandao seem to be quite popular picks if the Mikado videos are anything to go by. And Heyting too! Also, Ryo in Neogeo Battle Coliseum is a mix of him as Mr. Karate, and Buriki Ryo (down to his alternate Ryuko Ranbu super having the joystick inputs very similar to how you do it in B1)

I love GuileWinQuote's videos. The way that he does in depth looks at fighting games that dont usually get much attention , shows an admirable level of passion . This video in particular highlights that passion - in it, the dude not only analyses a game thats famously difficult to emulate , but he also builds joysticks out of friggin tupper wear just to play it . Great stuff man, keep it up.

Awesome video! What a neat game with super unique style, I like how the fighters are labeled by style and not just their names. Not to mention your commitment to playing the game the best way possible, that's pretty awesome! I'm sure finding that board and PCB was a challenge, let alone getting them to work, and capturing them! Super impressive. Your presentation is also great, I find a lot of FG channels difficult to get into and sometimes impenetrable with all the jargon and tech, especially as someone new to the genre, but your laid back commentary and humour was a treat! Your sub count is criminal, and should totally be higher! Consider me a subscriber and a fan.

Thanks for making this video! I'm glad you shared Buriki with us because I think it looks amazing and full of potential due to its unconventional, yet seemingly intuitive control scheme. I've always thought about how jarring it can be in traditional fighting games to control your character and perform motions on the same stick. This game solves that problem by keeping movement and attack options separate which eliminates awkward intersections where you want to move but also buffer an input for a special move. It would be nice to try this game.

Great video! Really appreciate how deep you went for this, especially getting all the original hardware and making new sticks AND even demoing it at tournaments. Really spreading the gospel and opening eyes for this game! I didn't know anything about it but after watching your video, now I really want to play it. The idea of using a stick for attacks makes so much sense and feels so fluid and is so ahead of its time, considering how we have options like that now with the right analog stick. The entire video, I was imagining how this could be ported to modern systems, and I can't really settle on how to do the left two button movement well. I guess it'd have to be the L triggers? Still not as elegant as two buttons though. Anyway, many thanks for making this! I will also spread the gospel of Buriki-One now
