Just think...there was a time when all cymbals were made like this. Good to see a revival of this traditional way of making cymbals.

Great video, Timothy. It makes me appreciate my cymbals even more, instead of just how they sound, and feel under stick, but the work that goes into making them, which essentially results in how they sound, and feel. I'll be really interested in hearing, and seeing the final outcome of that particular blank that you were hammering. I look forward to the next instalment.

Very interesting, and I can imagine that the risk on rsi is a big one espacially when the grip is tight, it’s hard work I think..thanks Tim👍🏽

Definitely. I've struggled with some tendinitis over the years. Thankfully, muscle development helps with that!

Thanks for sharing this great video! I witnessed other cymbals' smith doing hammering back and forth 2k times then towards lathing, back to hammering 4-5k times. With the B20 grade bronze hammering. On average each cymbals usually gets 3-5k time of hammering but if you're doing more than 5k like whatcha doing man.. 😂😂 Hammering while turning clockwise is definitely easier when you're trying to put a circle of hammer marks on a blank bronze. Hammering while turning a quarter turn anticlockwise is more advanced when you're trying to fine-tune the surface of the bronze doing what I called petal shaped hammering marks(I could be wrong but you get what I mean) on the bronze. Both works kinda the same. I would bend the bronze with my knees at first, then push it inside out with my arm and last I prefer to knock the bronze with the back of my hammer's wooden handle after the bronze has been hammered all round. I think it is just harder to bend after as I put hammer marks due to the tension we just built from HH. Again, just my opinion. Cheers! 👍👍

Yeah man! That in and out method is typically what I use near the end too.

Really fun video, reminds me of that old Bosphorus video. Do you ever just get lost in the process? I would imagine for both hammering and lathing it’s pretty easy to just zen out. Thanks for the vid!

Oh yeah. Always! It's very meditative and relaxing. Thanks for watching!

Where do you get that kind of anvil and hammers ?
@ReverieDrumCo9 ай бұрын
I made the anvil from a 6x6 steel round (shaped it and took it to get hardened). I've modified most of my hammers except for the ones I got from Nick Downing. You can get traditional Turkish hammers from any of the turkish foundries.

I'm trying to do this to an old 14" crash to turn it into a China but can't get the Taco shape out, please help lol
@ReverieDrumCo7 ай бұрын
china's/swishes are notoriously extremely difficult to execute well. I made a china out of a really thin blank and filmed it. Hopefully you can get something out of this! (even though it's sped up). kzfaq.info/get/bejne/buCXqM6jkr7HgIU.html

It wouldn't have sounded like much. Just very choked and slightly trashy.

@@ReverieDrumCo still would be interesting to see your entire process and how it sounds as you work it
