Ed has stated multiple times that the fans have changed the meaning of Alive, from "why am I still alive" to "I am still Alive" By the end of 90s you can here the difference in the performance from anger and depression to affirmation and rising above.

Minus the incest part, the lyrics are autobiographical. The man Eddie thought was his father turned out to be untrue. His mother told him after his real father had just died. When Eddie was 13.

So the Eagles of Death Metal show at the Bataclan in Paris that was attacked by terrorists happened in 2015, and PJ were instrumental in helping them recover from that, even co-releasing a holiday single with EODM that year for the PJ and EODM fan clubs. Also, the woman known as "Kim the Interpreter" to the Jamily, who was an ASL interpreter at a St. Louis show a while back that Ed took an interest in the work of, learned a bit of American Sign Language from her, and then during the outro of Given to Fly, went down and slow-danced with her, all on camera during (I believe) the Touring Band 2000 DVD ( kzfaq.info/get/bejne/e8-XrJtns9zSqqM.html ), passed away in March of 2015, and that made big waves on the PJ forums.

Here's a link to a slightly longer vid of the Given To Fly performance with the ASL interpreter. I revisit this video often. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/gKiTg8-JmqingnU.html It's got a few extra seconds of Eddie talking when he noticed her signing and pulls her up onstage.

Man, this made my day. That wasn’t my favorite version of “Footsteps”, but it didn’t even matter. Love the shoutout to Stone, who often doesn’t get the credit he deserves, because he is the least flashy member of the band (especially now that he looks less like a rock star and more like a dorky music teacher). But the dude wrote all three of these songs, as well as the majority of their iconic early stuff (before the band’s songwriting process became more democratic), and he’s probably got the sharpest musical instincts of them all.

There's an interesting side by side comparison that you can do with Vedder's and Cornell's approaches lyrically and vocally. Footsteps and Temple of the Dog's Times of Trouble were written with the same instrumental base. It gives a little view at how they would approach the same piece.

I love the Momma-Son trilogy. The lyrics to Alive are so deep and disturbing especially when you realise “the look” does not refer to the look on the mothers face... Footsteps has always been my fave of the three. Not sure who he was talking about that passed here, he’s lost so many people.

I love Pearl Jam. Lyrically, Ed is the best song writer. Subjective, I know. Not even that I relate so much, I just think his songwriting is better than everyone elses. And the band members are so talented and creative. Truly gifted musicians. Maybe besides Slipknot (who I am a mega fan of since 1999), I think PJ might be the last of the truly great bands that are still performing.

I always felt Once was underrated. Diving into the lyrics is a nice new touch. Many of PJs songs don’t come with warm fuzzies. Don’t listen to and dissect the song Deep unless you’re in a good place. Thanks for this treat David. Hope you enjoyed the Turkey.

Heh, I keep commenting. lol. Just one more. I wanted to say how much I love this ending to Footsteps: "...I did, what I had to do, oh, and if there was a reason Oh, there wasn't no reason, no And if, there's something you'd like to do Just let me continue, to blame you" Anyway, great reaction. Great score based on the trilogy as a whole. I enjoyed watching.

The music for Footsteps was also used on the Temple of the Dog song Times of Trouble. Pearl Jam has done this a few times with their music. For example the demo version of their song Light Years' (Puzzles and Games) music was used on Mike McCready's side project The Rockfords. Their song "Falling Down" music which they only performed once and to my knowledge not recorded in a studio was used in another Rockfords track

I love Footsteps, absolutely love it. Though I'm aware of the trilogy narrative, I have my own take on Footsteps which is just another reason I love PJ. The songs just hit home for me on so many different levels. It is beautiful and haunting and lyrically spot on if there is someone who truly deserves nothing but a f@ck you and blame. Some situations don't involve forgiveness and I have mine when I hear Footsteps. His ability to pour out all his dark thoughts into songs saved his sanity/life for many, many years and we are lucky to have these gems and the connection we feel to all that dark truth. Oh, in 2015, there were a slew of Isis inspired attacks. As others have stated, Paris had several attacks including the nightclub horror and in the US, the couple from San Bernadino gunned down people at a holiday party. There was a lot of international terror that year. I know that you have reviewed Release, the ultimate healing drone that I yearn to experience live one day. Well the feelings and knowledge that he acquired about his real father, so sadly after he died, were complicated (duh!). His father was a musician and he realized that his 'obsession' with all things musical was not random but genetic and Release was both a desire for his late father to be proud of him, his music ( I am,, myself, like you somehow) and coming to terms with what could never be and his need to release that pain. Many songs connect and they span many genres - your journey has just started grasshopper!! Great present for Turkey Day, thanks!

Watching this now. Did your research include the backstory of this being the start of it all? That these three songs were sent to Eddie with no lyrics. He recorded his vocals over the music and sent it back as an audition for the band. He sent it back, they were blown away. He flew out soon after and the rest is history. Here is a link to the original demo trilogy: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/q9qiYMSBlZ3ck3k.html

The backstory: 9.13.1990 Momma-son Eight a.m. on September 13, he clocked out, threw his board into the back of his black '89 Toyota pick-up truck, and hit Pacific Beach as the fog crept in off the ocean. The music rolled with the waves as he surfed. Difficult themes from his own teen years surfaced and lyrics began to coalesce in his mind. By the time he got out of the water, three melodies and sets of lyrics were forming. He raced to his girlfriend's place in nearby Mission Beach because it was much closer than his own digs out east near the Bacchanal. The words might slip away if he didn't hurry. Still wet that Thursday morning, he scribbled outlines on sticky notes from work, pulled out his trusty four-track, and began to sing. Out came three songs, a brief rock opera shades of his beloved Who's Tommy. "The first thing that was written was these three songs," Ed said on stage in 1994. "Without even knowing these guys, we kind of wrote music together. It was this cool, little mini opera... about birth... incest... and death." "Dollar Short" became "Alive," Act One, where Eddie shoehorned wide- eyed autobiography about the lies surrounding his parentage into the groove, rounding out the developing storyline with some fiction about incest. The story told in "Alive," Eddie explained to me in 199915, was inspired by "a situation I felt I could draw from... this strange twist in my life having to do with a father that I didn't know was my father until later in my adolescent years. And then looking back and realizing the whole time that I was growing up I was maybe meeting him briefly. I would catch looks on my mom's face once in a while. I don't know what it was really, but I think she was seeing my real dad in me. He had been long passed [away]. Sometimes we're a little bit like carbon copies, you know."
