Heyy Jayy....oh you made me laugh. Most reactors that I have watched react to this song have always thought that the members of Wild Cherry were black. They react to the beginning of the song like you did but I've never heard any of them say that they thought that the lead singer was a female. Oh gosh, you're so cute. Thanks for your reaction and the laugh. Take care and.be well. Peace.

The story behind this song is amusing. As others have said, this band is from Stubenville, Ohio. They were playing a show in (I believe) Cleveland, and they were a rock and roll band. The funky disco sound was the latest thing, and the crowd wasn't loving their straight-ahead rock sound. A guy in the crowd (a person of color) shouted to the band to "Play that funky music, white boy" and a legendary song idea was born. If you listen closely to the lyrics of this song, the story is in there.

This is good, but it's unfortunate that the clip doesn't show the black members of the band who made up the horn section. Visually, it would have been a great way to further emphasize the cultural and racial mosaic that existed back during that era. Many of us loved and played each others' music. Thanks, Jayy!
