Honest review for the Herman Mille COSM HIGH BACK CHAIR - GRAPHITE. I cover what it is like to use the Cosm chair in a real work setting and compare it to the Aeron model. The Cosm chair is beautifully designed but is it worth £1000. Should You add this to your list for working from home?

So... yeah. My work office had a classic Aeron and to this day it's the best chair I've ever sat on. Just putting that out there. When the global pandemic hit I quickly realized I needed a comfortable chair for my home, but wanted to try something different than I had at my office. Previously I had one of those gaming chairs at home, but I never liked it. Probably largely affected by what I had at the office. So, decided to go for Cosm. 2 years ago there really weren't any KZfaq videos about it, and my country doesn't have a retail shop I could go and try it out. So took a huge risk ordering it, originally with Leaf arms. Yeah. I quickly noticed the Leaf arms were horrible when you had to do "office" computer tasks. For the reasons you mentioned, and because when you have to keep your hands "forward" there's only a little bit of your elbows touching the mesh which holds a lot of pressure. So they get sore and sensitive real quick. And for me my elbows were positioned near the middle of the Leaf arms which dropped them below my table's height, so I had my forearms and palms going upwards which caused some minor wrist pain after long days. I ended up buying the height-adjustable-arms for Cosm and switched those on. My experience got instantly better. I positioned the height-adjustable-arms to the exact same level as my desk was so my arms were now in a straight natural position. I could now sit on this for 12 hours per day. I get your point about the chair wanting to "fight back" when you try to recline, but I sometimes do cross my legs or lean back good. I like the headrest in Cosm compared to Aeron, since I can lean back and relax unlike with Aeron if I want to. Yeah, in time you learn to slouch, but when you're using your computer it really forces you to sit straight. Cosm doesn't have as good back support as Aeron does, but I've learned to enjoy being able to move sideways and lean left or right, which is not possible in Aeron. When you take the chair away from your computer setup, it really starts to shine. Reading papers, reading a book, using a tablet, using your phone, playing a console, watching TV... Cosm is just fantastic for those. And the Leaf arms are really comfortable when you don't have to keep your hands "forward", with all the pressure on your elbows. When you can cross your arms on your lap having more surface covered by your forearms, the pressure is more evenly shared and the Mesh material feels really good. Also I still feel Cosm looks really elegant. The few visitors I've had were also impressed how Cosm feels "natural" from the very first time you sit on it - especially if you just sit on it to talk with someone. So TLDR and to summarize: For normal computer (keyboard, mouse, sitting desk) use, get Aeron. For everything else, Cosm can work. (It's a great conference / visitor chair) I've spent ~1800 € on it with two different types of arm configurations and shipping costs in total. I'd honestly say I'd be willing to pay half that amount in future knowing now what I'm getting in return. My hope is that it will last those promised 12 years at least, so I'll consider it "worth it". I hope some people still trying to make up their minds finds this post useful. If you have questions, I'm now ~20 months into using Cosm, daily.

And a quick addition: With Cosm if you don't find the "natural feel" when sitting on it, it becomes a problem. The Aeron with all of its available configuration is honestly adjustable for everyone's individual needs, but when you want to reposition yourself, you have to re-adjust the chair as well. And that can become choresome when done few times every day. Potentially if Cosm fits you, it saves you from that, and I personally find that to be a relief.

Not sure I agree with you here entirely. The benefit of the Cosm chair is that it is not only tailored to many body types, but it is tailored to your own body type, in many positions in which you typically use the chair. So if you recline, you aren't going to feel like you are going to crash into the floor behind you like many chairs, including the Aeron chair, makes you feel. The reason is that with the Cosm chair, it is designed so you will always have your feet on the floor when you recline. Plus, it moves with you in twisting positions due to the flexibility of the mesh and the plastic when you for example twist to your peripheral to see an office mate or other things in your environment. As you mentioned, It will always have a tendency to put you in an upright position which I actually feel is a good thing as it forces you to be in an optimal position when you type or use the mouse. I feel it's an advanced office chair, for many body types. I completely agree with you on the leaf arms though. I have to wear long sleeves if I am going to be on it for long periods of time because it does rub uncomfortably.

I just spent 4 months in hot humid conditions working in this chair and loved every moment in it. Much more comfortable than the Mirra 1 and 2 chairs we have in the office. I tried an Aeron today and being a fit between B and C, both did not feel perfect for me. I'm (pardon the pun) leaning towards a Mirra 2 or Cosm if I can stretch the budget. 6ft tall btw.

@@techloto not everyone will like every chair. That’s perfectly fine and the beautiful thing about the high end ergo chairs is there is something for everyone. But I would take more of a impartial view on why the chair was designed or how it was designed. Got lucky today I ended up finding good deal on brand new Cosm (mid-back) and Aeron at a surplus store. Ended up buying both. So I have them both sitting here at my desk, been testing out each one. Honestly the Cosm is a lot more comfortable for me as it seems to form to my back better. I've heard the Aeron can take some getting used to though, so think I will force myself to sit in it for a few weeks before I decide which one to sell.

man thank you for your review I went to their showroom in London yesterday having Cosm in mind but went for Aeron in the end. I love the beautiful design of Cosm but damn being 5'1 and 53 kg, that chair is not for me. I cannot recline properly due to not being heavy enough to activate the function. Shame Aeron didn't come with red colours like Cosm and also the white version I get is 300 pounds more expensive than the grey wtf haha

I don't want to be aggressive or anything like that, but i just want to put out what this chair is all about, because there are some wrong or missing information in the video. This wants to be some positive criticism. First of all, IT'S ALWAYS ALL ABOUT PERSONAL PREFERENCE, in fact, after sitting in both the cosm and the aeron, i could easily say that FOR ME the cosm is like a cloud and the aeron is like a torture chair: don't get me wrong, they are both excellent chairs, but i simply hate the shape and position of the lumbar support in the aeron (i know you can adapt it to you, but i hate that type of lumbar support too concentrated on the backbone and poorly wide)... could be the exact opposite for someone else, but it's definitely not comfortable for me. About the cosm i can speak from a designer perspective after literally studied everything about the chair. This chair wants to be an office chair but with a different idea in mind: doing all an office chair can do without bothering the user with tons of knobs and levers liek every other office chair. WARNING: this doesn't mean it's not adjustable, but that all the adjustability on the chair is reduced to the necessary and it all happens AUTOMATICALLY. If i don't remember wrong, they took 7 years to create this chair from nothing to every single piece of it that adjust himself depending on the sitting person. The idea behind the chair is that the chair would adjust to you automatically letting you concentrate on your work and not on setting the chair, and this, for designers, is like the holy grail of sitting experience. There are studies that demonstrate scientifically that this chair can improve your concentration and efficiency on your work over all the other office chairs that are not adjustable or super-adjustable, while letting you with the lower stress level over all the other chairs. I'll leave a link to those who are interested about this study (www.hermanmiller.com/research/categories/white-papers/can-chair-lower-office-stress/). Also the concept behind this chair is very complex while super revolutionary, and this let the chair win A LOT of important awards like the Best of the Best Red Dot in 2019 and it was in the TIME list of 100 Best inventions in 2019... those are some BIG RECOGNITION, and designers know that. If someone want to know what this chair is all about here is the small documantary from Studio 7.5, those who designed it (it's less than 15 minutes) (vimeo.com/264253587) Lastly, as i was saying, some informations in the video are incorrect due to the fact (i suppose) that you don't know some functionings of the chair, like for example: it's false that the chair is not suitable for relaxing, instead is one of the most comfortable among all office chairs for relaxing but you need to know how the mechanism or reclining works: if you try to recline in the high you use for work (legs at 90°) the chair will let you do that but it will also "force" you to go back in straight position because is a task chair after all... but if you want to relax you have to lower the high of the chair and then, almost magically, the chair will let you stay reclined all you want while keeping you supported on all your back, whatever your body shape could be. There are also tons and tons of other genius things about this chair, from the mesh to the shape of the frame that let you move while being supported, from the leaf arms that are super-versatile (while not for everyone, subjectively speaking) to the other arms options that let you choose anything you want... but it's too long for a youtube comment :) but if you want to know more about it just check the link i posted here and it will explain you most of the information about this awesome chair... and if you still don't like it, that's ok, at the end we're all different and as i said, it's a completely personal preference.

Sorry, I don't know why the comment was held for review. You made excellent points detailing why one would expect the Herman Miller Cosm chair to be great, but I'm sorry to say it is not. I am sure you can recall the massive flop that was the New Coke. Do you remember when Coke spent $4 million on research and interviewed 200,000 customers? Where is New Coke today? The design process and study does not always result in customer satisfaction. Here is a link to I am right dot com. 🤣 journals.plos.org/plosmedicine/article?id=10.1371/journal.pmed.0020124 It doesn't matter how much research or effort goes into a product and how expensive it is upon release if it ends up alienating a large section of the market. I am convinced that anyone who weighs above 75KG could struggle to use this chair comfortably. The cosm is a beautifully designed chair, but its beauty is far from skin deep. Again, you made great points but I believe it would make more sense to counter my critique of the chair rather than inform me about the construction process. Why are the armrests so uncomfortable? Why is the seat narrow? Why is the reclining function so challenging to use?
@giuseppepaolini6754
@giuseppepaolini6754 2 жыл бұрын
@@techloto you are confusing some concepts here: - first of all, research and surveys are very different things: the first is based on science and objectivity (such as ergonomics and human health), the second one is based on asking different people (WHO HAVE ZERO PREPARATION AND NOTIONS) about a topic. The result of the first one, if done in the correct way, is UNIVERSALLY AND OBJECTIVELY VALID until scientifically proven otherwise (that's how science work since the beginning)... the result of the second one, instead, is a sum of subjective opinions of people who are not prepared about the asked topic, that will NEVER be a universally and objective truth. That's why the cosm is a masterpiece after about 8 years of STUDIES, and the new coke was a flop only after a couple of years of SURVEYS... Also they are quite not comparable products since one is a task product that HAS TO respond some specific requirements in order to be produced and selled, while the other one is a mass appealing TASTE BASED product... they are completely different scopes. Also the new coke was a mass flop that has let an almost failed coca cola to boost the sells over every previous record... so maybe it was not a flop, and the purpose was another one, you have to read between the lines. - secondly about design products (i work with them so i know) there is a very big problem often difficoult to achieve: let the client understand completely what you are selling to him. In this particular case the cosm is a TOTALLY INNOVATIVE product: is a task chair WITHOUT the charateristics of a task chair. Since the first task chair was realeased, his definition was something like "a chair that YOU CAN ADJUST in order to fit you perfectly and let you work at the best"... every single task chair before the cosm responded to that definition... the objective of the cosm, instead, was, once SCIENTIFICALLY DEMONSTRATED that adjusting your chair reduce your productivity, to let the adjusting mechanism work automatically for itself... and there is the problem: the people don't understand/know that. Every single person i know (and there are a lot of them) that bought the cosm knowing this revolution, absolutely loved the chair (one of them weights over 100kg and it's over 190cm and it would not change his chair for another one even under torture, so you're wrong about you're belief) and they don't want to change it anymore... instead all the people i know (and there are a lot of them even here) that wanted a classic task chair, saw the beauty of the cosm, and bought it just for that, thinking "is a task chair and it's beautiful so it's the best", ended to hate it, EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM. So if you buy the cosm because is a task chair and expect it to be adjustable as you want, you simply don't know what you're buying, and YOU ARE WRONG, NOT THE CHAIR. If you search for an adjustable task chair, the cosm is not for you. Is that simple. If you are instead searching for something that adapt to you other than needed to be adjusted, than the cosm is perfect for you. That's it. If you buy the cosm and expects the leaf armrest to be as the classic armrests, you are wrong, not the chair. If you buy the cosm and expects the reclining to be lockable and/or that feels as a classic reclining, you are wrong, not the chair. ecc. ecc. - finally, if you want me to counter your critiques instead of explaining things and why they are like that, here i go: -the armrests are unconfortable if you expect them to work as classic armrests, which they are not supposed to do: they are designed to be NOT adjustable and at the same time work at best (1) if you want to be near the desk so they are not in the middle, (2) if you want to rest your elbows on them while you're tiping (but you have to set the high of the chair correctly and you're not supposed to move your elbow since is an ergonomically incorrect position -this is science, not my opinion-) and (3) if you want to recline and have a book or the phone to read on your lap (ergonomically correct position, even more since smartphone came out, and a task that classic armrest cannot do)... if you expect different things, again, is not a chair's problem, but you're expecting wrong things. -the seat is designed to fit the majority of people (it ergonomically respects the 95% percentile, that is a must have rule to be on the market) and since i know both an about 50kgX158cm girl and a 100kg+X190cm+ man who have this chair and both of them love it to death, i can OBJECTIVELY say that the dimensions of the seat are correct and not too narrow or too wide (if YOU feel that the seat is narrow, that is a subjective experience because maybe you expect it to be like a classic office chair where you can even cross your leg, but this is not the chair for it and things like crossing your legs are under the incorrect positions to assume ergonomically speaking... for an ergonomic seating experience the dimensions of the cosm seat are perfectly correct, other than that everyone's opinon is SUBJECTIVE about it). -again, the reclining mechanism is challenging to use if you expect it to be like a classic reclining system, which is not. The reclining mechanism on the cosm was studied exclusively for this chair and you cannot find anywhere else. If you expect locks on it, you have chosen the wrong chair. If you expect a tension adjustability on it, you have chosen the wrong chair. The mechanism works in a way that if you are at the correct high to work the chair will keep you straight and in a correct position to work, even letting you recline a few times once in a while without lifting your feet off the ground (which would be the WORST POSITION in an ergonomic perspective). If you want to relax instead, you can lower the chair a bit and the tension will adjusts itself to a looser way in order to let you recline as much as you want, even semi-autoblocking in a precise position if you want to stay still. I've personally proved this function and i can say, like every other well-aware cosm's owners i know, that it works perfectly for what it's designed. That's it.

@@giuseppepaolini6754 did you say the armrest are not made to work as classic armrests? Then what are they futurist armrest? Putting the shape aside, the texture is horrible and grazes your elbows. It's an oversight. Plain and simple. The narrow design of the seat will affect more than 5% of users. Your assessment is disingenuous and not reflective of real-life use. The chair is uncomfortable, offers minimal adjustments and has poor comfort for arms. There is no chair suitable for all, and this design implies that to be true.

@@techloto from what you write i guess you have zero experience of design and the market of chairs in particular... there are chairs for every use in this world, and for every type of chair there are different seatings, different armrests and different backrests, everyone for a specific use, person or activity... most of the armrests on office chairs (not all of them) are like those you can find on a secretlab chair or those similar "gaming" chairs that are the most dangerous chairs on the planet for human health... the leaf arms on the cosm are a way to respond to most use (more than a classic one) in one shape. And it functions, as 4 out of 5 people i know that proved or had the chair assert. Also if you don't like them because you prefer the classic ones, it is an option to the cosm chair, and it even costs less... so complaining about the leaf armrests because they are not like the classic ones is as wrong as complaining about a motorbike to not have a seatbelt, even more with the fact that they are not obligatory. Also the texture you are saying is "horrible and grazing" is TESTED IN LABS and proven not to be it: so maybe is you that use the chair and the armrests in a wrong way... i also can rub my face on a towel all day long till i bleed from my eyes, but this would be me using it in a wrong way, not the towel to be scratchy... or you are telling me that all the towel in the world sucks since you can scratch your skin with it even if it would take an entire day?... About the narrow seat, you are telling me that my assessment is disingenuous... i hope it's a joke... i reported to you DATA, MEASUREMENTS, STUDIES and 100% POSITIVE OPINIONS about the seat being the correct shape and dimensions, and because you are the only single person to have tested the chair saying that it is narrow, so it's narrow and period?... are you joking?.. I'll make it simple: there is a SCIENCE called ERGONOMICS who has rules, measurements and laws since 1961 when the IEA was founded, and those are universally accepted and demonstrated scientifically-> the cosm chair respects ALL THOSE RULES, MEASUREMENTS AND LAWS, and this is mathematically demonstrated, it covers all the 95% percentile-> so the seat is CORRECT in dimensions and shape OBJECTIVELY. if you say the opposite it's simply your (WRONG) opinion, because we are talking about maths and numbers and those are not opinions. Period. about you saying "The chair is uncomfortable, offers minimal adjustments and has poor comfort for arms" i have already responded to that in my previous comment and in this one. The chair is confortable for what it's designed, and you keeping complaining that has no adjustment, again, is like going to buy a motorbike and complaining about the absence of seatbelts: YOU are buying THE WRONG THING for your need. YOU are wrong, NOT the chair. The chair does what it is designed for perfectly, this is tested. If you expect something different is your problem, don't complain about the chair. Unfortunately for you, the cosm doesn't states to be suitable for all, as every chair in the planet, you can't do a chair that fit a dwarf as a giant as an handicapped in the same way with nowadays technology. But again you are expecting something that the chair is not designed for. It covers the 95% scientifically, that's what it declares and that's what it does. All your other suppositions are simply that, suppositions and nothing else against data. Finally i will not respond anymore to you, i've said all i had to say more and more times, and i gave you all the info to let you inform by yourself, it's up to you if you want to learn something or stick to your opinion. But remember: i gave you science, maths, demonstrations, tests, ergonomics and all and only OBJECTIVE FACTS, while you gave me only your OPINIONS. But those remains so, and have value for you only, while objective facts are true now as in the future for everyone in this world until PROVEN otherwise. That's it.
