I hear this song close my eyes and i'm back in my grandparents kitchen.

What an incredible song and love story! My grandparents were married almost 50 years when my grandmother died, age 65. Pop lived to age 98 and kept fresh flowers beside her photo on his nightstand for the entire 30 years until he passed. Those kind of love stories build strong families. What a wonderful way to honor her family.

This was the most powerful song I've heard in a long time! What a great story! Maybe a mistake to listen on the way to work, as I teared up a few times! That line "Since '45 I've touched her skin in the middle of the night" reminded me of my husband, who for as long as I can remember has reached out in his sleep to lay his hand on me, not in a "I want something" way, but a deeper "soul to soul" way.

Way to get me sobbing on my way to work! This song was amazing and her voice, perfection.... Those genes. Man. Powerful song. Pappaw is southern. I had a mammaw and a pappaw and a nanny and poppie.

@Don @RockN2Country - I found this song in a music video today and then saw you had reacted to it. It's amazing. You should check out the music video with old family recordings in the background. She also pits the reference in the description of the video area. She has several good songs. It does remind me of my great grandparents. Everything about them was the same. He would often say he was waitin' on her. My great grandfather was the ultimate male role model. I have a son, for 8 years we had 5 generations. After he passed away, we still got an extra 2 plus years as 5 genertaions. Basically my family averaged 20 years apart. We knew there was a slim chance at 6 generations. Going by average, we made it over the halfway point if my son has a child at 20. All our family met young, married young, had children young, and led a good life. My great grandparents had my grandpa, he and his wife had my father, my parents had me, my wife and I had 1 son. Don, I sure hope you see this comment. Your channel is very special bc the songs you react to are mostly heartfelt and have substantial meaning lyrically.

This song really hits home. I am pretty sure any one that is around Hollys age had grandparents with very similar stories to hers. They really are and were the greatest generation.

Really well written song! The story reminds me of one of my favorite movies, "The Notebook". You had asked about "Papaw". This term, as well as other versions such as Peepaw and Pawpaw come from the French word for grandfather "Pépère". Since both of Holly's parents are from Louisiana and the state has a strong French heritage, it makes sense that she would use that term. My grandfather was called "Papo" and my grandchildren call me the same. This term has a Spanish origin and means strong man or first born. Some southern Italians also use this term but they adopted it from the Greek term for Grandfather "Papou". Being in Texas and having Italian in my family, that pretty much explains it!

Great Song to go with an absolute beautiful voice!! Love it 😍😍😍 Hank Jr was born in Louisiana, but grew up in Alabama. When he "settled down" and built a home, he wanted to be halfway between Nashville and Montgomery...and that's how he settled in Cullman, Al. It's a very small, country town!! He has other homes and hunting cabins (in Alabama and out of state) but he considers Cullman his "Home"and it's where he raised his kids. Yes, "Papaw" is a common Alabama name for granddads. Some of my best memories of childhood came from being at Papaw & Mamaw's house!! Being 2 or 3, dancing in the kitchen to "Baby's Got Her Blue Jeans On" by Mel McDaniel with Mamaw, and singing "Grampa, Tell Me Bout The Good Ol Days" by The Judds to Papaw ....just to hear him say "Aw Hell baby girl, ain't no such thing as the good ol days... We're living them now!" Hahaha

I love this song. Her voice is SO good. The lyrics are true to life and delivered like she's just telling us about it. Just a mention, "Mamaw " and "Papaw " is an Arkansas thing too. (and Missisippi)

Was hoping I'd find this one in your videos. I had shed a tear or two to this song over the years. Then a few years ago, she opened for Jason Isbell at the Taft Theatre in Cincinnati. I told my girlfriend to prepare herself for this one. She laughed it off. By the end, as she strummed those last few notes, you could hear sniffling throughout the crowd. When the lights came up, guys were wiping their eyes on their shirt sleeves as girls were digging in their purses for tissues. Never seen a song encapsulate a life and love so well in just a few minutes.

The man is her husband Chris. She's an amazing song writer.

Thanks. Glad you liked the recommendation. She has some other great songs as well like The Highway, gone away from me and Railroads. Although she doesnt seem to be as big as she deserves to be. She did write this song. Apparently even the order of the kids was in the right order. She reminds me of Jason Isbell in terms of song writing. Don whenever u really need a mind blow check out the album "Southern Family" by producer Dave Cobb. It's the best country roots album since the "O Brother" soundtrack. It features Chris Stapleton, Jason Isbell, Shooter Jennings, Miranda Lambert, Holly Williams and many others. It's tip top son. Highly recommended 4.5 stars!
