Thanks for all the good info.I'll make up a bunch for my .44

I need to make some more wads myself. I've been putting one felt wad under the bullet in my 45/70 and it seems to help keep the barrel clean. This is a slightly compressed load as well.

Glad you like them, my wife says I sound so monotone in my early videos that I could put anyone to sleep! I use the wads under the bullets in my Martini's and in my percussion revolvers.

I never realized how much I misspeak till I started making KZfaq videos. LOL :) Still waiting to load some rounds for the Gahendra. I just bought a bunch of wads for my Hawken I'll try making lubed wads from. Thanks for the videos

@markrhodes05 The mixture is basically what the Amy used in the blackpowder years. Beeswax and Tallow are always a constant in blackpowder lube recipes, they both are easy to clean and help keep the fouling down. I use a cutter that is slightly larger than the chamber bore so they are easily pressed into the bore but seal it tight so you won't have a chain fire and the oversize wad help scrape fouling out of the bore when fired giving you more shots between cleaning.

Absolutely, in fact it is soft enough to work with your fingers to smear it into the patch or you could melt it and soak them in it.

Great film! Thank you. Not to take away but to add possibilities. I use a Harbor Freight punch set (can't find anyone else that makes these). part#67030. They fit my little drill press. Made short work out of filling containers full of a lifetime supply of .31, .36 and .44/.45 cal. wads. That felt from Little Rock is great stuff! Just made my lube different but it works so far. Looks like you have enough to pass down to great grand-kids! Thanks again.

I did not use felt. I use two 1/8 thick sheets of pressed cardboard. They was glued together to make a 1/4 inch thick sheet. Then the 1 foot sheet was put into lanolin bees wax mix. Then I punch out the wads. They are strong like little pistons. I also use it for reloading 410. But mostly for the 44 cap and ball.

@carolinadare You must do it to eliminate the possibility of an explosion. With no airspace the bullet can slowly start out the barrel on a steady pressure curve. With a airspace, the pressure ramps up before the projectile even begins to move. It acts a lot different than smokeless. The difference is why the ATF has ruled blackpowder an explosive and they haven't for smokeless powder.

I like it, its hard for me to say how good it is since I haven't used anything else. Instead of using paraffin, I used citronella candle wax which stinks, but isn't as hard. I can mash the cooled product up with my fingers and apply it to my Martini Henry bullets before I size them.
@ginsboy200313 жыл бұрын
@markrhodes05 Yea I get grief for cleaning my revolver in the sink as well. You can make these wads for pennies per 100. I've used them recently as the wads needed loading my martini henry. I substituted the parafin for citronelle candle wax the when cooled, it was hard but still soft enough to smear around the large Martini bullets cast.
@ginsboy200311 жыл бұрын
Try making a small batch using citronell candle wax, it stinks but the wax lube is soft enough to mush with your fingers.

Dixie, track the wolf, so many wonderful online shops for our greasy black powder goodies. I've recently mixed two batches of black powder lube and will test it out when able. Both are made of fat and beeswax, but each of the two have more of one than the other. One is a heavy beeswax mixture with a little bit of fat, the other, a heavy fat mixture with a conservative amount of the wax.

I get the beeswax from honey cappings from my hives. Use it to make lube also for my Lyman 4500 lubersizer.

I was using a recipe posted by the duelist1854, using tallow and beeswax. Before that I had used 50/50 beeswax and Crisco. How good is your Gatafeo lube? I am quite happy with mine but willing to change to yours, if its superior. Great video by the way. Thanks

Harbor freight has punch’s, I believe less than $10. Walmart has some candles with three wicks, about $4.( mainstay)

Grainger , Harbor freight, Amazon, E-Bay , I made all of mine The .457 come out .460 and it is perfect for Walkers ,Dragoons, all .44 , I also make my own wads as you do but different formula from Mike Believue , I think it was him ? , 1lb Lambs Tallow 1/2 lb bees wax works great .

One part tallow, one part Bore Butter and one part bee's wax makes a great lube wax. Just a bit softer and more pliable.
@ginsboy20039 жыл бұрын
James Cooper I like using the citronella candle wax instead of paraffin for that reason also. It cools hard, but I can mush it up by hand and smear into the grooves of my Martini bullets when I size them. I had to custom make my sizer so it doesn't have holes in it for the lube to flow through.

What would happen if you used only beeswax alone?
@juststartsomewhere90892 жыл бұрын
The only difference if you use beef tallow is its a slightly lower melting point right? I can get beef tallow super cheap I know a guy. I live in Arizona but I don't carry my gun with me everyday just range and they'd be in wad form anyways. Also and I'm not sure I'm genuinely asking but wouldn't the paraffin wax make more suet?
@ginsboy200314 жыл бұрын
The original recipe calls for 1 part paraffin, one part mutton tallow, and one half part bees wax. I used citronella candle wax instead of the paraffin and I think it made the lube a little softer. As I said in the video, if you need a good black powder lube this works well. You can mush it up and apply it to your round ball patches for your muzzle loader as well.
@fishblade29 жыл бұрын
if your powder amount did fill more of the case wouldn't you have to add a wad that didn't have lube on it to prevent the lube from negatively affecting the combustion of the powder? Also I saw that you commented beforehand on using this powder for round ball patches for muzzleloaders. I'm not familiar with anything except for modern muzzleloaders but wouldn't the same question apply about the wad affecting the powder by sticking to it?
@ginsboy20039 жыл бұрын
Talmadge Fisher For a gun like the Martini Henry, you only load 85 to 90 grains of black powder by volume yet the case capacity is around 120 grains so you need something to add to the case. In the old days if you were going to fire quickly, people use to apply spit to the patch to lube it a little. Now the commercial lube is Bore Butter is used by many people but its not slathered on, so you would apply this the same, not much powder would stick.

What is the longest period of time that you have successfully stored BP cartridges with lubricated over powder wads? Do you use dry cards between the powder and the lubricated wads?
@michaelpriest62423 жыл бұрын
@@missingthe80s58 this is excellent, relevant, specific, and very useful information! Thank you very much for it. I shall very soon test my lube to determine how it stands up to late summer/early autumn weather.

For 44 pistols # 45 = .457 I.D. punch from Track of the wolf , Good film and 1 correction The pinch above for the 45 Not a 50 =1/2 " way to large . 7/16 " is to small for .44 will work but loose , May not seal from heavy recoil ?

Make your own tallow! Dont buy it. That way if you make it yourself, fresh, you can add vitamin e as a preservative. Keep the tallow in the freezer it will last a long time.

why MUST it be lambs tallow ? wouldn' t any kind of fat work?
@Badboyz71a Жыл бұрын
Where does anybody get lambs tallow cheap these days? at $30 per 7.5oz a bottle, that is very high priced bullet lube. Buying T/C bore butter is now soo soft it is really a liquid! I am thinking they ain't using lambs tallow at all
