+Ribbons Almark I don't know anything about either profession, but I'm still willing to bet that being an astronaut is still more complicated than being a drill operator.

Depends on the astronaut. Back in the 60s and 70s, sure. But today? Remember Sally Ride? She was a school teacher that was chosen to go into space, and would have had the Challenger not exploded en route. Most astronauts are just scientists who sit on a rocket that takes them to a lab that, rather than earth, happens to be orbiting in space. They don't even push the button that take them there. So you get trained to deal with gravity. Big deal. Most astronauts are not military pilots, nor do they know anything about flying or astrophysics. You could argue that mathematicians are needed and help, but there's no reason to think that a drilling operator doesn't have the same mental capacity to handle the conditions of outer-space as any other space bound scientist.

+hunterkiller1440 I almost feel I have to buy the movie now just so I can hear the rest of his commentary. I mean you know this has to piss off Bay. Ben is big enough that Bay can't try to blackball Ben. It has to sting Bay that this little actor is ripping up Bay's movie right in the movie's DVD commentary track. I imagine Bay having trouble sleeping at with only statutory rape law cards in his wallet as his only comfort.

I died when he out the audio of Ben Affleck commenting about why Michael Bay put oil drillers to become astronauts instead of astronauts to become oil drillers. I came back and died again when he said Michael told him to "shut the **** up".

i remember listening to that commentary and Affleck being quite entertaining at points when taking a shot at Bay. If i remember correctly there was a point where he says how frustrating it was trying to act dramatic in a scene and when watching the dailies with Bay he said all Bay cared about stuff like "oh look how I shot that tree back there" and not giving a crap about the acting. That explained A LOT about Bay to me

It’s not a stupid plot. It’s called payload specialists and NASA uses them all the time. People forget they were just passengers, they had absolutely no training in any other aspect of the message other than the whopping 8 hours on the rock. The rest of the time they sit back twiddling their fingers. They landed on an iron plate accidentally. How well do you think astronauts without experience would’ve handled that? The comma went down and that happens so you can’t depend on teaching from earth as you go. The plot, I’m sorry to say, makes sense.

Actually, the female characters in his movies normally have active parts. The problem is the casting. He seems to have really high standards for attractiveness in women, so they're always impossibly hot.

To be fair, drilling at that level surely requires lots of training, knowledge and experience. For one thing, you do need a fair amount of geological knowledge or whatever you call the study of rocks and the earth, and also a fair amount of engineering knowledge. Having said that, I am also fairly sure that astronauts could learn the science of drilling a little faster than drillers learn about astronauting...

They have 14 days to become experts in drilling. In the other hand, Bruce Willis and his gang only needed to survive the trip (not even the whole trip, just the first half). They weren't suppose to manage the radio or the navigation or pilot the ship. They were passengers for 95% of the trip. Of course astronauts can learn to drill, but in 14 days? At that level of expertise? Yeah, I'd send the drilling people with clear orders of not touching any button in the shuttle. Now if I had a couple of years to train the astronauts, that'd be different.

I used to not like ben affleck very much but that one sentence redeemed him in my eyes. His charity work, argo, gone girl, being batman, they were okay but they were not enough, that line was. "They don't know jack about drilling? How hard can it be, aim the drill at the ground and turn it on."

People legit forget how funny Ben Affleck is. A lot of Kevin Smith’s stories about him are amazing. Like how Ben would sit and watch the dailies with a bucket of popcorn and laugh and cheer at his own scenes. Before he was famous he was his own biggest fan 😂
