I've been "spinning wrenches" for over 50 years now. From day one, I said automotive engineers should spend a minimum of 5 years in the field working on vehicles, and then and ONLY then be allowed to design something! sure would make a feller's life easier wouldn't it? Great job Ray! My hat is off to you!

I’m in management. Have been for 40 years. I can barely change my own oil, but regardless, this video - and Ray in general, is a prime display of ‘problem solving.’ Mechanic, administrator, retailer - it doesn’t matter. This is a prime tutorial on how to work the problem, keeping composure and professionalism, until the objective is met. A management trainer could use this video in any seminar. Major kudos, Ray.

If people would drop their sensitivity about everything and learn how to take a joke without running to HR every 5 minutes…yes. In my 25 years of working, as long as you learn your audience before making a joke about lubing a shaft, most people laugh and are not offended. It’s the folks that want to make everyone’s life less enjoyable that are the problem.

Im not an automotive mechanic, i work in the industry but im no mechanic for then. I am however, in the Canadian Armed Forces as a mechanic and youre videos are not only interesting to watch, but ive learned so much that helps me more with my job than anything else on the internet! Love the videos. I was working on my wife’s car (courage taken from your videos) when I was really frustrated in trying to get something to work. Stopped for a minute and asked WWRD (what would Ray do). Came up with an ingenious fix and was very happy. Better yet my wife was happy which is way good. Thank Ray! Dodedodedo.

Lumens, Lux and Foot-candles are all acceptable much like MM, Inches, etc. Just different units of measurement.

Foot-candles (US) and lux (SI) measure the same thing, illuminance, i.e., how brightly you've lit up the connector you're trying to unplug. Lumens and candela are different. Example, a flashlight with hi/lo and focus settings. Setting hi or low changes the lumens. Focusing in a smaller beam increases the candela (or candlepower, an older very similar unit). Walking closer to whatever you're shining the flashlight on increases the lux. (Increasing lumens increases candela and lux too, of course. Increasing candela with the same lumens increases lux too.) At least if I've remembered my physics right. 🙄

I said "Oh really? Do I own this building? *Points to Walmart.* No. Me: Then I can't open the door do go inside because it doesn't belong to me.

In my own shop I had to turn the ringer off a couple hours in the morning and afternoon. Too much interruption. Take time to make a proper return phone call with all needed information.

I laughed to hard when you said chop the casted part off the side of the block. I was just thinking dang if most guys were doing this without video evidence that thing would be gone. You are held to a very high standard by your KZfaq audience. You do a great job. I was thinking disconnected motor mount and jack motor up a bit.

@@inoahmann7542 It's not "a bad design". This engine is used on other platforms so it has different mounts to fit all platforms. If manufacturers had to cast a new block for every single vehicle iteration, prices would skyrocket and people would complain.

@@cup_and_cone I'm not saying the added mounting point is a bad design, just that they didn't leave clearance to change the ac compressor. If they added another inch of clearance on the sub frame it wouldn't be an issue. Cutting off that mounting point won't affect the vehicle, and it makes future repairs easier.

When I was younger I would try everything possible to keep from pulling "extra" stuff off the car to replace parts. After years of doing that I realized I was just wasting time trying to do all that, especially when I would have to remove them anyways. Now I'm pretty quick to remove anything in my way and it makes the job much easier.

I "tappy tapped" the thumbs up before I started watching the video.. always do. Love your videos man. I love working on cars and doing it right. Respect. You do the same.. sadly many cut corners or more often.. tackle situations that they can't handle. Yet won't tell the customer. I cut corners on my own rides but I've learned to be a machanic because I like helping others, doing what I love, and getting paid for it.. the 2nd two are only icing. Jokes on them a little in a way.. I'd do it for free if I could afford too. Lol and lord knows I have before.

Ray has inspired A new generation of Auto technician. My son always sees me watching the videos he was hooked and subscribed immediately. I do more of the heavy diesel repairs he isn’t remotely interested in the craft. He said Ray makes it look easy and he isn’t covered in grease that he wants to do that. I watch Ray and think man I would fill the cuss jar doing what he is doing.

This is The reason to stay away from newer cars, unless you can afford a new one when the warranty expires. They're just too hard to work on. If you have to go to a dealer for service after warranty expiration you'll spend a grand every time you walk in the door. And that doesn't include the other stuff they're going to try to push on you that you don't need.

All of my years wrenching on cars and light trucks with a little medium duty thrown in I'm still quite indecisive. I find the decision to bulk disassemble versus sneak something through in a possibly unique or innovative manner is still a huge stumbling block for me. I'll also whittle away with the tool on hand versus hunt for the better possible combination. This causes me immense anxiety and stress. I deal every day. Some days are just glorious. I am the king and the master. Other days I want to work at Walmart... Auto mechanics, automotive repair technician is still a great trade. It's difficult and uncomfortable at times. It can be frustrating. Getting paid well and working in a great shop means you must be highly productive. So keep your hands on the wrenches and keep them moving. Watch your unapplied time and keep the service advisor well advised at all times. Educate yourself always and study on your own time. Always challenge yourself. Keep a positive attitude and remain friendly with all co-workers, managers and owners. You will have a successful career. Or go to work at Walmart.... God Bless all of the mechanics that keep it moving into the future.

Now you know why the assembly plant installs all that stuff on the engine before the engine is stuffed into the chassis/body. When vehicles went to transverse engines, the best engineers in the world couldn't make everything accessible in the field. When all else fails, drop the subframe.

My ‘91 Marquis came from Florida and is probably one of the cleanest examples of that car here in Wisconsin. My ‘03 daily driver on the other hand barely has a trunk floor left in it with both sides rotted away and the frame is visible through the front quarter panel.

My daughter just had the same problem with her suv same as this and I did the diagnosis for it . When I looked at your video I was glad that I own a shop and I have 4 technicians working for me. Was wondering why the compressor was installed without priming procedure first. Yes after you put in the compressor you should always change the dryer and or expansion valve. This is a step that a lot of shops and or do it yourself is fail to perform, leading to a failed compressor

27:15 he said there was a new TXV and condenser/dryer being installed. As an HVAC tech myself, I agree with you. But, I'm sure most customers do not want to pay for the new parts.

I fully agree with the comment from one gentleman that it should be mandatory for engineers to spend at a minimum of 1 year out in the field getting hands on experience before they are allowed to design anything. A healthy dose of common sense would be extremely helpful too. With only 48,000 miles on the odometer, the cornpressor sure didn’t last long…..

Candel power is a VERY old measurment it is now known as Candela. Candle power and lumens are measured in slightly different ways but they can be thought of as analogous (think acres and hectares[ both measurments in area but one describes the area a team of Ox can deal with in a day whilst the other is a true measure of area in M^2]) .

Light would be candela in SI units being lumen per steradian for a point source, or lux being lumens per square metre. We'll see if Ray chooses to operate in the worldwide SI units next time, he does use metric tools almost exclusively though in an imperial country. . . . . . . . . 🙂

@@KollectingKaos Yep, no surprise, although candela does use the sensitivity of the human eye. The written official definition of the candela is about as user-friendly as a cornered rat though. To quote: The candela is defined by taking the fixed numerical value of the luminous efficacy of monochromatic radiation of frequency 540 × 1012 Hz, Kcd, to be 683 when expressed in the unit lm W−1, which is equal to cd sr W−1 or cd sr kg-1 m-2 s3, where the kilogram, metre and second are defined in terms of h, c and ∆ν.

Very little differentiates Chevy and Ford... Chrysler took the death dive long ago. Blame regulations as there is no incentive to make any component of a car that will last longer than the drive train.

Don't you just love it when you have to take the the left door on the last car to remove a part on this car. Just one of the many reasons I changed from being a auto mechanic to a metal fabricator 30 plus years ago. Having built many race cars I know you can build cars to be much easier to work on.

The aftermarket does anodize them because up here in the north corrosion gets to them. The factory ones tend to split on the bottom and leak.

Nice to work on a relatively clean car, eh? Even if it did spluge on you a couple times. I was a little surprised at an AC compressor failing after only 42,000 miles, though. GM Must be outsourcing those from Lego or Mattel.

From 2013-2018 I worked at a GMC dealership. GM’s have a lot of AC issues especially with the condensers cracking at the joint weld on the top right. 2010’s is where AC issues and PCM/ECM issues occurred a lot.

Honda compressors aren't much better. Went through 2 in 96K miles in my Acura. Then one went out in my wife's Pilot at 3 years and 2 months with 27K miles. That only cost $3,200.00 USD. Honda did a one-time Good Faith warranty and only ended up at $200.

You made me step up my game and I bought a new scanner from the Matco man yesterday. Just watched the Ford boss me video about you. You are one straight up good guy. After I retired from the Army, I went from job to job for a little while till I found the right fit as an auto tech. I grew up in central Florida so your cool beans saying made me laugh because I have said that before.

Those come out without dropping the frame. You have to wiggle them over and bring them down pulley side first. I have done a bunch of them. Those equinox compressors love to fail for some reason. I actually use a lot of UAC compressors too, they are great and I haven't had a single one come back with a failure yet. I have replace a lot of condensers on them too, they alway star leaking down the sides where the dessicant canister is, so its probably a good idea to just replace it or it will be back eventually.

I think Ray didn't play enough with shape sorter toys when he was a kid. I've seen him struggling to remove parts before, in situations where I figured out the easiest way to get them out just from watching along with the video. 🙂

@Briggs & Stratton Power. You would have to remove the TXV to flush the evap coil and lines. Being the system was flat it would restrict flow and thus possibly trap flush. If it were the old orifice style than it wouldn't be as much an issue. HVACR 30yrs from cars to commercial refrigeration.

The electrical variable solenoid goes bad on those gm compressors. Prob should have seen if there was any codes for that. No contamination if that was the case

I remember back in the day working on Fords, Pontiacs, Mercury's with so much room. But now you need smaller hands and you have to be a contortionist to get parts out. I've noted Ray that you don't work on Hybrid electric or Electric cars. A lot of shops won't even touch these vehicles do to the High Voltage. Does your shop avoid these vehicles?

Candlepower and lumens measure different light qualities, and 1 candlepower equals 12.57 lumens. When measuring lumens, you can also think of it as the light illuminated in a 1-square-foot area one foot away from a single candle.

@16:21. “Adsorb” not absorb moisture. Sponges, paper towels absorb. Silicon packets cannot absorb moisture. Another great vid Ray. Appreciate your hard work bringing good content.

I have premium with a VPN, so never any commercials, sorry mate! Good content as always. I sorta felt like that when I replaced my compressor on my truck. Only way it would come out was taking the mech fan and shrouds out, nearly had to take the heater core hoses out but managed to force it around them without breaking open the rad

Great job. Invest in a "trigger clamp" at your local big box construction store. They will spread as well as clamp. The 600 lb. Clamp. They are very helpful in a mechanic shop. also work great for compressing brake calibers. DWHT83185. Cut a wood wedge, works well for spreading that sub frame.

It'll take at the least a grand wizard with a mild drinking problem to get that baby out of there.....have a pudding cup. Oh and the new tool they'll have to make.....oh boy I can't wait.
