I find that I get tunnel vision at work. That i can focus intensely on what's in front of me. But this gets in the way of multitasking requirements and I lose that focus when I'm trying to switch from task to task quickly. At home I feel like i self sabotage my basic needs and prevent myself from fully engaging with society.

If possible, try to structure your work in a way that allows you to "monotask" and designate a specific amount of time for each task. If you haven't already, I would recommend reading Deep Work by Cal Newport.

I'm not saying you have ADHD, but as it is the topic of this short, I'll piggyback on it: Hyperfocusing can manifest as Tunnel Vision or Flow State. People with ADHD can not only focus on certain things as well as others, but better! If something is of high intrinsic value to the person with ADHD e.g. they find something very interesting, focusing on it increases dopamine levels that activates the filter of the brain that was previously shut off. This leads to you being less distractable! So the questions becomes: How can you make use of that ability or even turn it into a small superpower? As another commenter said, structure your work around it, also make use of the pomodore technique, recognize distractors and eliminate them to get into that state more often and longer - just please don't "eliminate" talkative co-workers ;-). The other thing you describe is called the challenge to transition (from task to task). There is this 1-2-MOUNTAIN rule for ADHD which means, that, as opposed to neurotypical people, people with ADHD do not view an increasing list of tasks as linear (1-2-3...) but instead as non-linear: Every additional task feels like a bigger mountain to climb. First: Ask your co-workers or boss to only give you tasks at a certain time of day and not trickling them in over the course of a day. This way your brain does not get lost in integrating every new task into existing ones. Second: Use time blocking to allocate times for certain types of activities or tasks in your calender and set a timer. If the time is up, stop, reward yourself, take a pause and consciously think about what your going to do next. Transitioning is letting go of something and focusing on something new, which is hard to do for people with ADHD as they are often lost in intricate webs of thoughts. They do not think less, they think too far! Good luck!

I "baby stepped" my way into meditation. I first kind of did it on accident listening to Beethoven's Pastoral Symphony and then I realized I could repeat it with that. I'd just lay down do the body part by body part release as I listened- I was told (this was decades ago) that this isn't "real" meditation but I felt like I got to the same place. In later years after I lost the CD I figured out how to repeat it with balanced movements which required focus on them and after a time simply starting the movements triggered the state. I've also managed it walking in nature. for years I bought into the "not real" line because I never have been able to do it sitting still without an audio or visual component (for me it needs to not have words in either form just things you can follow). I did my stuff anyway because I found it helped me and now I'm finding more people who get what I long ago dubbed "kinetic meditation" (my way of saying I move when I do it) and understand for some body still means mind over clocked but adding a repeatable movement or sound or image helps quiet the mind.

Well, for most people, meds are really the best thing that can happen to them and level the playing field. My ADHD got so bad in the last 6 years I DO need meds and WANT meds, just gotta find a psychiatrist that does take patients again and doesn't have a year long waiting list here in Germany, though, in my tiny city :/ So yeah, some people should try meds and it can make a world difference for them. If anyone has a stigma around them etc. please don't push that on others and try to find the right meds for yourself (if you have ADHD) and see for yourself. And the emphasis is on "the right meds" (so, no anxiety-inducing, zombie mode not the right meds for me meds, naturally).

Some people wouldn't know the difference meds can make. I only took them as a kid and want to get on them again, but just, wow, stuff was suddenly manageable and just doable and stuff o.o And hm, the title here is kinda misleading/not optimal also x-x :') But yeah, some can find their own way to acheive stuff, some can't D:
