The GoPro Karma Drone pairing / connectivity issue with the controller has been an unresolved issue for over a year with no response from GoPro -despite hundreds of messages and over 1,300 upset customers demanding action. It seems the problem can't be fixed, but in this video I share how I got my drone replaced with a brand new one from GoPro for $53.

I will never ever buy any GoPro products in my live, they refuse to help or replace my Karma. I had the same issues as a number other people.Paul

I think this is dead in the water at this point, no updates in a couple months. Gavin doesn't seem to be responding to comments anymore either. I'm not giving GoPro another dime

I see comments pouring in all the time, but just dont have much to go on. If we find a lawyer who knows the next step to take I will join the fight and provide the contact list. Maybe I can post an update video and ask the community to help find an attorney?

So far as of today 4/18/21 I have followed what you said you did Gavin and GoPro has asked me to upload a video to KZfaq I'm still waiting to hear back from them. Thanks Gavin you have been the most help. I hope GoPro tackles the issue for everyone. I will keep updating this post when GoPro contacts me in 3-5 days.

I suggest you don’t wait on them. They asked me to upload the video and I did, then I called them again and told them I uploaded it and they started working on getting my replacement. Yes there were other conversations and questions but I was not going to wait on them to reply because I wanted them to see how painful this is been.

As soon as I watch this video, I subscribe to GoPro service and start chatting with customer service. They asked me to go through useless trouble shootings and asked me to take a video. I sent one with a stabilizer and without one. I don't know what the stabilizer has to do with the pairing issue but I did what they asked. Then they created a case and I am waiting for their response. Hope they replace mine too. Thank you very much for everything you have done. I haven't got a replacement yet but still... you have done more for us than GoPro has. Thank you

Update. They are not doing "replacement" anymore. You have to pay $129 no matter what

I have had this drone for maybe 3 years now. I bought it because I thought that GOPRO was a reputable name and company. Gavin, I have watched all of your videos pertaining to this recent issue. I feel like this drone has had problems since I purchased it. Right out of the box, I had to install an update. It was then grounded again in early 2020 due to a GPS issue. That is when I found out that the Karma was being discontinued. If they were able to send you a replacement that works, it must be some sort of problem that they can resolve but won't. I'm not really sure how to approach a fix. I assure you that I won't pay another dollar to them for anything! I guess the name KARMA is very befitting now isn't it?

I've had my Karma drone put away for the last year as we moved and we hadn't gotten around to unpacking a ton of boxes. I was playing around with the grip and the cameras a few weeks back and I updated them and also updated the controller, but I couldn't find my Karma charger so I didn't have any charged batteries and couldn't attempt to update the body itself. Today, I found the charger and got it all out and found that I'm having this exact issue. When the stabilizer is in the Karma Grip, it powers on as soon as I power on the Grip. When I put the stabilizer in the drone body, though, it will not power on, and of course the controller says it can't find the drone and I'm unable to re-pair them. I thought something must have gotten broken, so I'm glad I found these videos. I just wish the subscription thing was still working. I'd love to get this drone fixed considering it seems obvious that GoPro did something to brick them. Has there been any more info from the company or from the lawyer involved?

Hi. I have the same problem. Subscribed to their care programme and been told it doesnt apply to Karma as it is out of warranty and is no longer supported. I informed them that the help on the controller says it does apply and he has to talk to his lead. I've informed them that if its a manufacturer fault, then under current law in Europe the manufacturer is liable for 6 years. Waiting for their response. Tried all the fixes you've suggested and from other KZfaqrs to no avail so far. Thanks for your efforts Gavin.

@@caraudiocentral GoPro continually refused to accept responsibility. Taking legal advice I was told that as I bought it from Amazon my contract was with them and therefore they were “legally “ the manufacturer. Arguing the toss with them at the moment. They are trying to refer me back to GoPro. Also been advised to pursue it through my credit card company.

Spent $1000 on this thing, rarely use it... pulled it out for vacation this holiday and bamm, out of nowhere it doesn't work at all. A complete F'ing brick! I'm livid.

Hi Gavin / all. Thanks for the heads up Gavin in youre last video. Whilst I was reluctant to believe it would work here (Germay), I paid the EUR49 and followed the prompts, uploaded a video on the pairing issues and within 24 hours, GoPro had agreed to replace my core once I had shipped it to them with the label they provided. Two days later, the new core arrived. I downloaded all of the updates and it seems to work fine now. I'm running it with a Hero 6 though ... ? Interestingly, as I had been banned from the GoPro Forum (like many of us) initially the GoPro Experience site had some trouble letting me in, but it worled out in the end. Thanks for your perseverence on this Gavin - without it I wouldn't have a drone that flies. I was bummed about having to pay GoPro more money - but it was significantly cheaper than buying a new DJI or what ever. Thanks again but I will continue to follow this forum with interest. Rhett

If you know a lawyer that wants the case I'm game! I'm still not sure what legal case we have for something like this, unless there is proof GoPro intentionally sabotaged the products. As of yet I cannot prove that

I am in 2. Gavin has 1400 people or more that he could reach and most would join to a legal action. Once this problem gets to the media its game over for them, they would probably look for a settle. Hope one of us takes de lead on the lawsuit.

November 27, 3021, I got a reply from GoPro , basically stating, "Thank you for reaching GoPro Support. As upon checking with our Team, we regret to inform you that the issue is something cannot be fixed by troubleshooting and your Karma core is faulty. they are unable to replace the camera due to out of manufacturer's warranty period. Kindly check the link below and locate the GoPro Warranty." With that said, I signed up for the subscription today as well and I will reopen another case, to see if they will replace my Karma Drone and my Black Hero 6 camera. I will keep updated.

I'm in the process of chatting with GoPro again after uploading and they looked at my video and ended up stating that the Karma was at the end of it's life/discontinued and not able to purchase a replacement sending me a 25% discount code for other GoPro Camera's or accessories. I chat back in referencing my case and wondering why as a Go Pro Subscriber I cannot purchase a replacement for $129 and got "I believe starting on that date of announcement we have already discontinued having replacement claims for Gorpo Karma Drones under the Gopro subscription." Really frustrating as this wasn't any issue or cause of my own doing for this to start happening with the drone/gimbal/controller. Thanks for the information Gavin, hopefully I get somewhere

Hey Gavin, I am an estimator. Self employed. I love the use of the Karma and just recently discovered this issue on my drone. Right in front of a customer. I felt like a fool. So disappointed! I will keep following up to see if anything happens or changes. This is very important to me when trying to get close up shots of areas on a roof that cannot be accessed immediately or easily. November 7th, 2021, I came to KZfaq to see if there was an update for Karma Drone. Well, I found out via KZfaq, there is expert mode (manual). Which, you can operate at your own risk. Then I saw your video that I am watching now. Funny thing is, I turn on my controller and it was not no longer connecting to my wifi, so I had to input the my wifi password again. Once I did it and it connected to my wifi and the controller stated, it had an update that has be downloading for about 1 hour 15 minutes. ( stilling downloading at this moment) I will comment again once if finish and I attempt to fly the drone to give you update on my progress.

Hi , Because of your great info and hard work I was well aware of the pairing isssue with the drone before I bought one. I still got one for $200 aud with hero 5 and karma grip. So even if the drone didn’t fly I wasn’t too fussed. Realistically I used the camera and gimbal more. But my drone is working. Also based your advise I never run the update for the drone as it was working fine. Although my karma grip has stopped working with the camera. The stabilizing works but I can’t control the camera via the karma grip. I tried the hard reset and still nothing. Question is … since I can’t use it to fly the drone any more should I now run all the updates on the karma controller to help at least fix the grip issue?

What I do not understand is the following: After the GPS issue an update had been released by GoPro to solve the issue. All Karmas with that new upgrade were flying without problems again. After the release of another drone update the devices were not working anymore and they don't have a fix for it. Why they don't put the working upgrade back again on their servers with a new higher version number and everyone with the faulty upgrade can revert to the previous working upgrade again by downloading and installing it. In my opinion and understanding this should work. Why GoPro is refusing providing such a solution? Is there somethings else we don't know or we shouldn't be aware of?

I heard about this way, so after seeing your video, I paid for the subscription ( which I plan on cancelling right away through my credit card), but when trying to get into contact with customer support, I get this message: 'Sorry, all agents are helping other customers right now. Please try again later.' But, also this message: 'START CHAT' (Waiting time approx. 1 mins) Clicking for an hour now, GoPro does not let me chat to a representative. I am from The Netherlands, maybe that is the issue. Will keep you guys updated. Edit: Location is not the issue. GoPro has blocked the chat options for the Karma. How convenient. If you try another product category, the chat function actually does work. Edit 2: Well, the wait time is a joke. I'm in through the 'Accessories' category. Had to wait like 20 minutes to get first contact. Edit 3: First contact is pretty much one-sided. They are not responding in the chat. At least customer representive Angelu does not reply. I guess because I mentioned a pairing issue. Edit 4: Let's try again and waste some more time on this. New chat, again in position line 2. Edit 5: 45 minutes (!) later and with no solution in sight, the chat was ended by the representative without explanation. The person I chatted with requested a video. So I send a google link which he says he can't open. Submitted it through the email he sent and he replied he still can't see the video. He then just exited the chat. GoFuckingPro.

I also found that there is not a selectable option to chat about the karma. I believe so had to choose a different initial category before I could start the chat. Keep in mind the time of day, GoPro probably only has the chat staffed during regular business hours, or less.

There was a selection to have them call me back. The only thing I found is that I had to make sure everything was in their business hours. When I requested a call back they called me back within the hour or within a few minutes. I hear some of you were having problems getting a hold of someone, I don’t know why but this was not a problem on my end. I know your frustration though and it sucks.

We are having the same issues - so frustrating. The stabiliser works fine in my hand held so its not that - its the drone itself.

I had a chat session and a phone session with GoPro today but didn't get the $129 waived. I told them about how this is a scam since GoPro's firmware caused the issue. I also talked about how some got the fee waived, but some didn't. I said I didn't want to get a replacement and that I'm not going to buy GoPro going forward since they can just push out a buggy firmware to devices that are outside of the warranty period and collect more money from their customers.

Hi, I'm trying to understand why the GOPRO, on webpage related the account, where there are all the associated devices (HERO BLACK, STABILIZER, KARMA DRONE, KARMA CONTROLLER) allows to DOWNLOAD the firmware of each one ?? How to install it ?

Lucky you. Most of us were never asked if we wanted the update, it just ran automatically. Avoid updating at all costs

@Manny Karas I'm from Sydney and having the same issue and GoPro refuses to repair, replace or refund my Karma because it's out warranty. Can I ask did you get a replacement Karma or you have 2 Karma's and only one is working? I have spoken to ACCC and will file a formal complaint against GoPro. Thank you and I hope to hear from you.

I dont see this like appropriate solution in a certain way having to spend more Money, Gopro have to be responsible, many of us we not have the possibility of paying $50 dollars for económic reasons and because we are from other countries which we do not we have the same salary , this problem should be dealt with courts or lawyers, it is very sad the fact that one with a lot of effort bought something that is not to be able to use it having a minimun salary of $60 a week... And more sadder that a Big company are not being responsible, What i supposed to do with my abandoned drone? I'm very sad 😢😢 Thanks Gavin For Keep Us Informed.

Spoke with GoPro last week and they refused to offer any replacement parts or fixes, shame I dug mine out of storage after college, pretty sure It only ever was airborne twice.

Hey Gavin, I am experiencing the same issue you had I cant get my drone to connect with the controller. I have not used the drome for a few months and was in the back blocks of NZ north island and thought I would get some pics but no luck linking controller to the drone. I got home and linked up with the internet. I tried all the advice in setting up from gopro but again no luck. It is very frustrating

Is this still at status quo? GoPro ignoring the problem? My karma is sitting here at home, it looks like new and it can't fly, $1100 wasted. Are they still willing to at least replace them for $129?

Thank for going through all of this for us. I haven't been able to fly my drone at all in 2021 since the update installed and am now going to go this route and see what happens. This is insanely frustration it feel like we are being strong armed into paying more money to GoPro. It seem though more and more that its the update that grounded our drones, and that keep crossing my mind as an "on purpose" thing. I don't know this just sucks.

Hi, what a surprise, I have just turned on my karma, and it will not pair. I have not used it since September 2020 when it worked fine. I am in the UK, and GoPro UK have washed there hands of anything Karma related. Has anything been resolved since this video.

Does it still pair though? They changed my karma drone body FOC as it was still in warranty but 6 months later it no longer pairs with controller, same issue as before but now Go Pro will not reply to my messages, the last correspondence was they where emailing me a solution but haven’t heard anything yet and it’s been 2 weeks??

How can i not get the drone to update ? It will connect automatically and update when it will have wifi connection ? my drone is still flying and i am trying to avoid this issue. thanks for the video !!

I have the same problem. My drone was working fine but week ago it stoped working. Cant pair with my controler. Some times after hours of trying it starts to work. But after flying and trying to fly again it doesnt work again.

Hello, I purchased my drone late 2017 and have not taken it out of the box. My question is where should I begin? I watched one of you videos going through step by step to pair. Should I acquire the GoPro insurance before I fly. My concern is I’m going to have issues like yourself. Please advise. Thanks!!

I bought a non-working Karma, worked out that it was the stabiliser, worked out how to fix the stabiliser (the data cable ribbon inside had disconnected), and everything worked after that. I actually recorded a video on me fixing that, if you’d like to see it.

Today, after 2 years of patiently waiting for a fix and trying every trick possible I threw my GoPro Karma drone in the garbage where it belongs. Batteries going to the recycler. GoPro will never get another sale from me and I’ll make sure everyone I come in contact with knows about their poor quality, overpriced garbage. I believe that they purposefully bricked their drones to avoid the cost of support and government compliance. They essentially stole from customers. It’s pathetic. My DJI Mavic has been flawless with astounding performance. I should have listened to friends a long time ago.

hi , only just seen these videos , my karma drone hasn't been used for quite a while, went to use it a few days ago, only to be meet with this problem. i am about to try your previous video and see if i can get it to pair. otherwise i've got a $2k brick..... i'm in new zealand. i'd be lucky if i've only flown it half a dozen times. i'm with you. we shouldn't have to be paying anything for replacement. was looking at getting a new action camera...... now i know i'll never buy another gropro product in my life.

Having the same issue. So basically I can spend almost 200$ on a shitty drone that may not work in a couple months, or save my money and buy a better drone. I've been a GoPro die hard for a long time and I'm so disappointed to see how far they've fallen.

I know how this is going to sound, but you guys really would help me if I could could get a scan from a receipt. I got this money drain drone from my dad, but he died a couple of years ago and my mom just can't find the receipt, if he kept it anyway. I need it to get things going at GoPro Support. I'll replace any personal details with Photoshop.

Just had my issue “escalated”… so ridiculous, not a penny should be spent to get any replacements, they should be sending us money! I got over $1000 invested in a paper weight.. unreal… hello DJI

Hello and thankyou. I have the same issues with the Controller not pairing. I become a Go Pro member with their subscription and paid my money in April 2021. I have sent over to go pro the receipt, also made a video of it not pair and all troubleshoot options being tried with no success. They initially didn’t acknowledge my Subscription but now have and said My karma is out of WARRENTY? Can you please tell me if your Karma drone was out of WARRENTY when they replaced yours? Thankyou very much from Sydney Australia

I got a new drone when I signed up for the free trial it turns on but it won’t connect to my 7 black. Had the harness change by GoPro still nothing is anyone else having this issue. I really don’t want to down grade to a 5 black as one KZfaqr suggested any tips would be appreciated. Great video Gavin

I reassembled the Done tonight with out replaceing the damaged capacitors, I just removed the remains. I took the drone out side with no propellers (Becuase i don't have any that are not broken) and started the motors and turned it off then started the motors and the drone never lost connection.

They replaced my drone in March of 2021, I was not a subscriber, everything was fine, just like yours. Now, 10 months later it's back to not pairing and they said, well, it's out of warranty and we already replaced it once.

Ok I’m new to the whole karma drone thing. I literally didn’t know they were a thing until I ran across one on fb marketplace. Dude was selling one for $400 with like 4 batteries a hero 6 and some extra goodies. I watched a few videos and was like dang this thing is impressive. However those video were roughly 3 yrs old. Then I stubble across a few videos talking about problems. Which led me here. Sooo, I guess what I’m asking/wanting to know is would it be dumb to buy one knowing all of this? If the drone works fine now, what’s the likelihood it would mess up in the future? If it’s fixed or never messed up before is there still a change that I’ll run into these pairing issues? Thanks in advance for any feedback.

Hey there, I am in Australia, I had a child nearly 2 years ago and I didn’t fly for a few years. I pulled out today to show my daughter and take some footage and found out this issue. I have reset my controller however cannot find the new update firmware. Please help of you are still around and have any advise

Today, June 10, 2023... No luck with GoPro support. Same issue as everyone has. I work in electronics, so I'm going to perform surgery and find this lost connection. They don't even offer any type of replacement any longer.

Hi guys, I still have the pairing issue which started in March 2020, can someone confirm if something is being done by Go pro about it. Also I did get a replacement drone from Go Pro last year using the subscription hack but that would not connect as well. Unfortunately by the time I checked it does not pair my subscription had run out. Now Go pro does not cover Karma since Dec last year on the subscription, so I have a brand new drone (at least I feel so) but that does not still pair. I have a brand new kit lying around that I do not want to throw away and still strive to get it working.

This same problem happened to my drone. I was able to find a fix to it. Im not sure if it’s temporary or a permanent fix, but all i did was remove both the gimble and battery and left the karma under the sun for about 2-3 hours. So far my karma pairs with the controller. Its been 5 days and counting.

Post script - it did seem to reset the drone and it did go into pairing mode but it didn't change anything regarding the connection, it still won't pair or be seen by the controller. So back to square one ;/

i JUST discovered this issue, I inherited the Karma drone from my boss, he purchased it back in 2018. I received it only a week ago, it is October 2021. I've been going back and forth with GoPro about this for 4 days now. Since I don't have a subscription, they essentially told me i'm S.O.L and offered me a 25% discount on one of their new cameras. Which does not help me as I wanted to use the drone. I'll have to look into this solution.

just tried this and they will not budge on charging me the $129 fee. i tried it all and they said its mandatory for them to charge the fee and they also told me that there is no known issue about the drones not working. such a let down :(

Have contacted Gopro and they responded with a 14 step instruction list, which I now have tried, unsuccessfully 32 times. I can never get passed waiting for the drone to turn off. My battery goes flat some 2 or so hours later. I'm in Australia, has anyone got any ideas, to get back in the air. If I hadn't updated the controller, I would still be flying.

I live in the UK and not had an issue since they all went down in Jan 2020 and mine successfully updated after the solution. Since then I've changed my ISP so my Karma can't access the internet so I'm just posting this to anyone else who hasn't used their drone for a while, don't allow it to connect to the internet. Maybe this helps?

Well this sure turned into a win for GoPro. The lawsuit seems to be dead in the water. Gavin has disappeared with his working drone, and we are all left with a $1000 piece of junk.

Hey GoPro Karma users I did the process of paying and sending my drone in total was like $163.00got the drone back, didn’t do the update and installed the GoPro hero black 5 and it’s flying when tried the hero7 didn’t work.

They must have programmed a kill switch, and I suspect with the last year's update when all karmas were grounded and you had to update the firmware. I took good care of my drone but after pulling it out of the case today, the controller just said karma not found. I checked if it were paired and it was. I ran a reset on the controller, then it wanted to install an update, and after that it won't even pair. As I understand people are spending $129 to fix this. What a racket... I am not buying anything GoPro ever again. What a scam...

Are you unable to subscribe to their service and request an exchange from your location? Also, i understand. I hate that the solution is to pay GoPro more money for a mistake they either caused or are unwilling to acknowledge.

Mine was grounded until their last update. It flies, but the gps is terrible. I turned down the maximum distance. I bought 2 extra batteries from GoPro and even those die within a week if they’re just sitting in a case…
