New subscriber. Thanks for sharing a mountain of useful info for amateurs like me. I ran my first half marathon a few years ago with 0 nutrition plan, 0 gels, and 1 water stop (which I barely took sips of due to no practice) and limped toward the Finish line at about a 1:50:00 time. I Had so much damage done to feet which I know now was due to lack of sodium and fuel. You breaking down each step taken before, during, and after race day helps me in knowing a rough guideline for my first marathon this December. Thanks again!

As someone who showed up at 7 for the 1st wave, I’d definitely reiterate showing up at least an hour early. The security checkpoints were severely packed when I got there and I barely made it to the corral for the start… but it made for a great warm up! Haha. Great recap/tips.. congrats!

Good tip about the heart rate. Freaked out in my first marathon on the weekend and because I slowed down it cost me my goal pace. My coach later told me exactly what you said - trust your body

5:07 I don't mean to piss on your chips, but in 1985 i did 2:45 in Sydney, no specific preparation- just my usual daily runs, no carbo loading, gels, tapering, coach etc. Oh, and far inferior footwear. The day before all i had was a couple of Mars bars- i didn't want to have to stop to go to the toilet. I'm just of the opinion that maybe you're overthinking it and the resources you put into it are not really justified.
