Many patients and health care professionals think knee replacements only last 10 years, or can only be done once and recommend waiting until you are older. Those statements are false.
Many total knee replacements and total hip replacements will last more than 20 years. And if they fail for any reason a revision surgery can usually correct it.
Here I will share some information on the longevity of current total knee implants.

I'm 53 and just had both of my new place a few weeks ago. I don't care if it wears out in 10 years. I wasn't going to sit around in pain anymore. Thank goodness for this medical technology.

I'm 48 and just had tkr. I have been worried about this but this helped. Doctor said my knee was destroyed after the surgery and i had significant sclerosis so i know it was the right decision.

Thank you Dr. Rosen! Had both knees replaced in 2022 at the age of 60. Long history of sports through my 40's including long distance track and marathon basketball leagues. I also traumatized my body when I was young by jumping off high fences and small sheds. I have been really concerned and even stressed about how long will my new knees last and very concerned about doing any weight or trampoline exercises. Knowing now that I could have them repaired with perhaps a lesser invasive surgery when I get older is consoling. A small list of recommended exercises would be awesome.😎

I enjoy all of your videos Dr. Rosen. I'd just like to bring to your viewers attention that the knee replacements can also fail shortly after surgery in rare occasions. May 6th, 2022 I had a partial knee replacement on my left knee that failed. The surgean accidentally broke my tibia during the surgery. An x-ray was taken the day after the surgery, but the fracture wasn't found.July 13th, 2022 I had to get a revised total knee replacement. It isn't fully healed, but is at a point where I can walk long distances with our pain. It has taken a great deal of physio therapy to get it to this point. I had a partial knee replacement on my right knee Dec 15th 2022 and is was a 100% success and I'm extremely happy with the results.

Just had TKR At age 61. I’m glad I didn’t wait any longer. Severe arthritis and basically no intact meniscus on either side.

Thank you I found your channel a few month’s ago when I knew I was going to have my right knee replaced, I have put it off for 10 years purely because 30 yrs ago I had what was major surgery then is now keyhole and I was very sick from anaesthetic , until broke my elbow 3 yrs ago and had elbow replacement we found out what I was allergic to, your posts have been very settling for me as well so thank you . I live in Australia and not in health fund so I’m waiting for public hospital .

Your videos are really good. I just had my second TKR 2 days ago. So I’m going through the hard 2 weeks part right now. I found that after 2 weeks, things start settling down. The pain resides and the sleeping schedule starts to go back to normal. I found the ice cooler with the wrap from Amazon works really great. That machine is heaven sent. I have it running for 10 min and off for 10 min. I use 5 frozen water bottles and these seem to last around 6 hours. It’s also really cold, which I love. Thank you for your videos. I personally appreciate you making them. Have a nice evening Doc.

I got my first TKR at 53 now I am scheduled for another one in July. I still have problems with the first one. ( the Dr fractured my bone when he was installing it) I now have osteoporosis and I am scared the hardware will break loose. Praying for a good out come.

Huge thanks Dr Rosen. You bring much comfort to those who REALLY need it … I had a medial PKR 2 months ago and coming along nicely except for the swelling around my medial component seems not wanting to go down. I don’t have pain , only swelling and hoping this is a normal part of healing process ?

Hi. Great video. I had my knee done 5 months ago and I love it. Back to racquetball and all other things. Quick Question: Where does the plastic material in the insert go? Is it absorbed in the body? Is it excreted? Thanks again.

This is a great video, thank you it puts my mind at ease for when I get one. I tore everthing but my PCL, dislocated knee cap and and no cartilage for 21 years I am 38. Any suggestions for surgens in Arizona I should reach out to?

Thank you, Dr. Rosen. I just found you when I decided to ask how long they last. My knees have been great since they were replaced. I highly recommend getting it done when it is needed. It is silly to wait. My knee problems went away, except for uncomfortable kneeling. What are the symptoms when the knee replacement starts to fail.. I have one that is 15.

We usually recommend x-rays every 5 years so if you haven't had a check up best to get one. Some fail without any warning. Most patients describe pain or aches, swelling or instability. If the implants get loose they get start up pain - the first few steps hurt and then the pain goes away.

I am 44 and my doctor had recomended me Tkr two yrs back saying i have premature arthritis.But i did not want to get operated in so early age. Now i have severe pain in left knee and pain has started in right knee also ,unable to walk ..Dr what do you recommend about getting TKR done...will i gave to go for revision surgery.Please reply ?
