Your discussion of the start of winter sparked a thought for me: My first wife (I was only supposed to have one--but such is life) chose as our wedding day June 21--the longest day of the year and, consequently, the shortest possible wedding night of the year. I should have recognized that as an omen. The second wife chose as our wedding day December 21--the shortest day of the year and, consequently, the longest possible wedding night of the year. Needless to say, the second marriage has been utter bliss. ;-) Here's to the winter solstice!

The seasons are defined astronomically: Spring begins with the Vernal Equinox (around March 20, northern hemisphere), Summer with the Summer Solstice (around June 21), Fall with the Autumnal Equinox (around September 23), and Winter with the Winter Solstice (around December 21). The equinox is defined as the moment when the plane defined by the moment the earth's equator passes through the geometric center of the sun, and the solstices are defined as the moment the sun reaches its most northerly or southerly excursion relative to the celestial equator. The local time of these events depends on longitude and the although the local time of these events does not vary, the terms Spring/Fall, Summer/Winter are reversed in the Southern Hemisphere.The advantage of defining these terms in astronomical terms allows discussion to share a common basis and reduces confusion.
@jg374
@jg374 2 жыл бұрын
In southern Australia the seasons generally are based off the months - Summer starts December 1st, Autumn on March 1st, Winter on June 1st and Spring on September 1st. Mightn't be quite as scientifically accurate, but it is easier to remember (and the main rule of Melbourne weather is to expect all four seasons in one day everyday, so specific dates aren't as necessary) :).

I full agree with the above, seasons tart with equinoxes and solstices. The weather, or to be more precise the climate, on the continent aligns with the se dates, where deep Winter is in January / February and high Summer is mid July to end August. Britain as an island is an outlier with its maritime climate.
@professorsogol5824
@professorsogol5824 2 жыл бұрын
@@lyha91 It probably would have been more accurate to say "ecclesiastical" instead of either "astrological" or "astronomical." Apparently the reason the vernal equinox is on March 21 rather than some other date such as the first of the month goes back to Pope Gregory. According to Wikipedia, he "wanted to continue to conform with the edicts of the Council of Nicaea in 325 AD concerning the date of Easter, which means he wanted to move the vernal equinox to the date on which it fell {then on the Julian calendar]". And that date was 21 March.

I don't know how fair the comparison of distances traveled per country is, Strava is used mostly in English-speaking countries(US and UK make up almost 50% of active users), it's not exactly something "popular" outside these. It's not like the grandma in Netherlands is uploading her rides to Strava, but she rides quite often.

In response to the winter conversation from a meteorology student at Oregon State University: The reason why meteorological winter is December 1st to February 28/29 is because this is the most likely time for wintery weather to occur in the NH. The coldest temperature on average also occurs around January 15th in the NH (varies by location), halfway through this definition of winter. Astronomical seasons start differently because they are based off of when the equinoxes and solstices occur. Winter solstice is December 21st because it's the day the NH tilts away the most from the sun.

Here in Central Pennsylvania, I pretty much just divide the year into two seasons--Mid-October to Mid-April is generally cool or cold, Mid-April to Mid-October is generally warm or hot. And no knock on specific seasons, just that the lines between them are hazy around here, tho' I do like it when a day is true to its season, like a spring morning or a hot summer afternoon or even a mighty snowstorm in winter.

Date of season changes is a historical change adopted from the British Navy. By changing seasons on the first of the month helped sailors know when to change from blue uniform to white (and vice versa). As a result, the change of the seasons is on the first of the month throughout the former British Empire, whereas most of the rest of the world changes seasons on the Solstices and Equinoxes.

I'm male 39 from Indonesia & i got coronary heart disease (CHD) on April 2021. After that i start to cycling everyday (before that i used to cycling weekly or monthly). My average speed improved a lot from 19 kph before CHD to nearly 27 kph now. Before got CHD i used zeopoxa app but after got CHD i used zepp and strava app. I'm riding XC full suspension bike with 26"x1.95 tires. The bonus is 20 kg weight loss and reduction of cholesterol level

The 'Average cyclist', according to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, is a ( male ) cyclist who can achieve a 200W Functional Threshold Power. They mark this feat as 'Healthy men'. 1hr17mins was my commute to work. LOL When I go touring, 20 miles between stops, or 1hr 30mins ish. 13.5mph = 21.75kmh. ( Close to average ). My FTP is 235. Bit above average. My PB 25mile TT is 1:07:00, LOL, dead average LOL Winter Solstice 21st Dec. 25th Dec, rise of the sun (Son). Bianchi. Longest surviving bicycle manufacturer. Introduced the 'safety bicycle' five weeks after J.K.Starley's Rover in Coventry.

Dec 21st is the first day of winter and the shortest day of the year. Days get longer during winter and shorter during summer as the first day of summer, June 21st, is the longest day of the year. After that, days get shorter

Around here, fall and winter just kind of slowly bleed into each other. We've had the early winter sunsets for quite some time now but the weather has just been a seasonal mix of clouds, more clouds, wind, {shakes fist} damned wind, cool rain, and slightly milder (but still not fun to get caught outside in) rain. Haven't had any frozen precipitation to speak of or any ground frosts, so it's certainly not what some people would call winter weather. I'm just gonna say that it officially became winter upon the capitulation of the last of the little yellow flowers that line sections of a local trail that I frequent, and I haven't seen one in about ten days. On the plus side, tomorrow is the first day where the sunset actually starts moving back and by new year's eve we'll have gained a full ten minutes in the evening despite somehow losing six in the morning. No one really cares about those morning minutes though.

OMG. I actually AM a meteorologist and my wife is an astronomer…. FIRST, “Astrologically” speaking is ASTRONOMY! tisk tisk tisk. The astronomers do define seasons on the solstice and equinox, but as I am also a Celt, the celts and others used the “cross quarters” - Beltane (May day) / Lughnasa / Samhain (Halloween) / Imbolc (St Brigid’s Day, more or less Mardi Gras. Pagans seem to have returned, so you can find people running around on these days (not Pagan’s Biker Gang - don’t mess with them). So it is Midwinter and Midsummer for just the reason you declare. By that measure Winter should start on Halloween. That is a bit silly though - even though the general circulation switches from summer to winter conditions quite quickly at the Solstice (the Inter Tropical Convergence Zone, or ITCZ, moves from roughly the northern tropic (Cancer) to the southern tropic (Capricorn) quite rapidly - much more quickly than the sun at noon itself - it takes a while to actually cool the Earth (really the ocean) down, so yea, Meteorological winter (as in it is cold and nasty) is skewed later than Halloween and starts in mid - late November. Hah.

Hi Si, re:calendar, there are at least two dates for Christmas, the orthodox church celebrates Christmas on Jan 6th. I feel its important to clear this up and also add to the seasonal confusion.
