Thank you for the video, could you make a video about characteristics of writing a paper, too? As a example, while describing something, do we need “the” for a thing that is not specific? Like "The organ that converts basic sugars to glycogen is THE(?) liver." "The external layer of skin is called THE(?) epidermis." - The rules of abbreviations and the most common ones. - Punctuations like (" "), (' ') or (“ ”) and (-), (-) or (-) Which ones are correct and when? -Most common phrasal verbs used in papers. And so on. 🥺

I used to work in an ice-cream shop in Piccadilly - never said “Did you want some milk in your coffee?” or I never heard someone using this form of politeness. Usually, I used to say “would you like some milk in your tea?” I thought that was being polite anyhow 🤔 - I am a bit confused now, but I get why is better using “did”.

@@user-qb3sb9of8s maybe they use it with friends? To me, all this "past for politeness" sounds a bit informal altogether, but quite authentic.

Once I had acupuncture from an English lady, and she called me "lovey", 😁. And also in Asian culture you'd shake hands more often, whereas in Britain you'd think twice about shaking hands, it can be a problem on occasions. Moreover, some Doctors will introduce themselves with their Christian name only, while others with Dr. So & so. And so on.

At the risk of being impolite Anna, it's interesting to see how this has changed since I was at school. My English teacher and my Mum would insist that the question should be "Would you like sugar in your tea?" Answer would be "Yes please, I would." It would have been considered less polite and maybe a bit too familiar to use "do" and "want" in this context.

Great examples of how to be polite using both aspects of the past. Sorry, but I can't help mentioning that, being part of a verb phrase, the base verb + 'ing' in the past continuous is the present participle rather than the gerund, which is the noun form.

Another way to make a phrase polite is to use a word, name, or pronoun which singles out the person you're speaking to, showing them special attention. Sir or Ma'am for strangers, their name for friends, and some term of endearment or friendship for others. Waitresses in the southern US will often call customers "Honey" or "Dear," which is confusing to some visitors from other parts of the country where restaurant staff don't use such familiar terminology. On the other hand, you seldom hear waiters speak this way -- maybe not ever! Calling someone "Buddy," "Pal," or "Friend" can be polite or a veiled threat, depending on the tone of speech. "Can you be a pal and let me by?" as opposed to "You'd better take a step back, buddy." Using a person's name can be tricky. If you say "Mr. Smith," it can sound overly formal, while calling the same person "Bob" could be too familiar. Very situational.

Unfortunately this "polite indirectness" sounds snide, arrogant and confrontational to many. It's a good example how living on an island can create slightly weird behaviors. I'd never use such "politeness" while working with guests in the hospitality industry, for example. The resulting misunderstandings would be really bad.
