A quick video showing how I have set up my refurbished hand pump to serve beer from a cornelius keg. Its pretty straightforward but you will need some specific items to make it work and have your carbonation and serving pressure set correctly. Cheers!

For the past two years I'd been dragging a corny out of the fridge and sitting it under my beer engine to dispense. Finally got it plumbed in this week, after getting inspired from this video, and used your awesome idea for a drain tap between the demand valve and tap - works like a charm! Top marks buddy!

Hi. What a great idea. When I get time I need to try this. Every time I finish using my beer engine say on a Sunday night I unclip and unscrew the push connect from the corny and waste a pints worth of all whilst wandering back and forth from my shed where the fridge and keg is to the bar area next door to shed. It's quite a ball ache. Brilliant. Thanks you 👍🍻

Just stumbled across this while researching corny kegs, very good and informative especially the use of demand valves as opposed to check valves. I have been dispensing through hand pulls/beer engines from 20l polypin bags (one use only), these are good especially for travels on boat campervan etc as I also have a cold box setup with a hand pump. However I have a bar setup at home and I'm looking for a cheaper option as in kegs. With my present setup the transfer from fermenter to bag is closed so I don't need to worry about exposure. As for carbonation I crash cool before the end of fermentation sg close to 1.010, this works well with my recipe beer as beer is clear and has a good head retention (torrified wheat). Using Co2 is a new thing for me and I want to be able to use it in my system as a protector and not for carbonation.

That was an awesome video, thanks for posting. We have been wanting to put one of these on our homebrew draft system for a while now. I like the idea of rebuilding a used engine, but here in the USA we're probably not going to find any used. The drain valve at the bottom looks like a great idea. Thinking of maybe a solenoid valve for an automatic line purge at the end of the night. Again, thanks for posting.

Love your video.Because of your video I purchased a hand pump and demand valve from the UK. I live in Ontario Canada.I was wondering if this hand pump can be used with home brew that is not cask ale? I am brewing home brew and fermenting in a corny keg. I would like to pour the beer through a hand pump and demand valve from the corny keg. If this can not be done can I transfer the beer from the corny keg into the beer in the box bags supplied by jig saw company from the UK. I live in Canada .I would use low psi around 2 to 3 psi. I am new to this so any info will help. Thanks for your time.
@DudesBrews
@DudesBrews Жыл бұрын
You could put any style of beer homebrew or otherwise through the handpump as long as the carbonation is kept low, whether it will be good or not is obviously pretty subjective but I have tried lots of hoppier pales and APAs on handpull that have worked quite well and even seen people experimenting with NEIPAs etc. You can definitely run it off a corny with the demand valve as shown in the video 👍🏻

I like the tap bit for cleaning, but Im not getting why id doesn't pull the beer through as well, if the tap was closed then it would pull beer through yeah ??. When you connect the beer line in to the demand valve, i'm guessing it just pushes in and seals ?? Andy.
@DudesBrews
@DudesBrews 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah the demand valve has a John guest connection so it’s just push fit and seals itself, the demand valve needs a fair bit of negative pressure to open so when the tap is open it will draw liquid up from there before it opens the valve, once it’s closed there is enough suction on the valve for it to open

Great video, I'm in the process of rigging up the same set up. How long do you think you can leave beer in the 3/8 pipe from Corny to check valve? I get the point of cleaning out the engine and 1/2 tube ... wasn't sure how regularly I should clean through the full length ... had assumed I'd need to do that fairly often. I won't be emptying the corny's that quickly (i.e. not in a single BBQ sessions for example).
@DudesBrews
@DudesBrews 3 жыл бұрын
the way i see it the 3/8 pipe is behind a 1 way valve so basically becomes an extension of the keg, I probably wont flush that bit until the keg kicks unless I know I will be leaving it alone for longer than a week or so and/or its getting very hot in the garage over summer etc. I'm going to move it closer to the fridge eventually so that most of the line will be refrigerated as well

Floating dip tube I'm guessing is pretty much the same as the Fermzilla? I've seen people cut down the existing stainless tube but wondered if it'd be worth getting a couple of spare gas in tubes (1" long) and attaching the non floating end of the floating dip tube to that?
@DudesBrews
@DudesBrews 3 жыл бұрын
Yes mate exactly the same as the fermzilla kit, I think a lot of people go with the short tubes rather than cutting the long ones down. That’s what I will go for I think or even just try and fit it over end of the dip tube as it is not sure if there would be any issue with that or not

@user-lm1xy6dc3s
@user-lm1xy6dc3s Жыл бұрын
Just watched a recent video by the apartment brewer where you were mentioned. He used a cask breather after the regulator. Looked them up and they cost about £50. Do you know what the benefit of using one over hooking up the co2 directly to the regulator? I’ve set up as above and works very well 👍🍻
@DudesBrews
@DudesBrews Жыл бұрын
I didn't really look into the cask breathers too much but as far as I know they replace co2 at atmospheric pressure, so if you want the most authentic possible keg equivalent to cask then they remove the small amount of additional pressure that you will have using the regulator direct. I'm perfectly happy with how it works without one and I'd also rather be reassured that the keg lid is properly sealed which might not happen without any extra pressure in the keg so you may still get some o2 and possible contamination ingress

Great info. Just set my engine up with the demand valve and gave it a good clean based on your last video. Different brand of engine England Worthside Limited so a few puzzles but all solved. Why not just disconnect the beer out line at the end of the session from the keg. Vent the line to air and pull thru the last beer. Then put that ball lock connector opened into the starsan and pull it through all the pipe and the demand valve?. Otherwise you will have beer sitting out of the "cellar" in the line and demand valve. I have got that exact creamer sparkler with my engine do you know it's brand or any other info. Your Harveys shouldn't have a sparkler on it anyway you can't get much more south than Lewes, what yeast did you use? Or i will wait for the video.
@DudesBrews
@DudesBrews 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Duncan, yes you can just disconnect from the keg and flush the whole line which I will probably do as well if I know its going to be out of action for a while. However I do prefer the ease of using the tap for a quick flush of the pump and not having to disconnect anything, I will be moving the pump closer to the fridge eventually so there wont be much line outside the cellar as it were. I've no idea on the sparkler it was just provided with the pump. Yeast was a 'Sussex' strain I had on a slant from Brewlab, I don't know for sure if its actually the Harveys strain but I suspect it is, Brewlab were quite cagey about it when I quizzed them at one of the Brewcon events!

@DudesBrews
@DudesBrews 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I think the 365 does come with a check valve, beer left in the 3/8 line is basically sealed off behind the valve so should be fine as long as it’s not left for too long unused, eventually I will move the pump closer to the fridge so there is much less line outside of the ‘cellar’ temp as it were.

great video thanks. you have the keg in the fridge and you connected up to the pump......i noticed you have a pipe going into the "IN" valve? did you keep the Co2 on whist pouring?
@DudesBrews
@DudesBrews Жыл бұрын
yes a small amount of pressure to backfill the keg, otherwise it will create a vacuum and you wont be able to pump anymore. You could just open the PRV to vent the keg and avoid using additional co2 which would emulate a real cask more closely but obviously that would then introduce oxygen and the beer would spoil in a few days
@12daasdf
@12daasdf Ай бұрын
With CO2 backfill does the beer stay fresh longer? I’ve been dying to get a proper hand engine setup but was worried about being able to drink an entire pin in like 48 hours! It seems like CO2 backfill and this solution with corny kegs just solved that problem for me?!
